HOAs (Homeowners' Associations) -- Are they really that bad?

People are a little easier because I understand them better (occupational hazard). But, in general I do not adjust my route too much for animals or people unless asked. This is nothing against either one; just my desire for a measure of solitude that is rare for me nowadays.

That's pretty much how I feel about people... well, except for the petting part.
I've changed my whole bike route just because I saw a dog or horse that I wanted to pet or even just get a closer look at as passed by me.
Same. I could be in a room full of people, and if there's a dog, or cat, or bunny, hamster, possum, doesn't matter, they're now my best friend and we're going to spend all our time together. I always bring treats.

Basically yeah.
Or I've heard several stories about people who had house pigs in areas where pigs aren't allowed since they're technically farm animals.
So I guess in that case you'd just pretend they're a very funny looking dog.
Some of those restrictions are zoning which is the city and not an HOA.

. . . We've lived in HOA neighborhood most of my life, and we've been lucky enough to avoid major issues.
The one rules that really bug me is they won't allow permanent basketball hoops, which is just ridiculous. Oh, and when we first moved into our current neighborhood, you weren't allowed to park work vehicles in driveway or the street. That one really bugged me, because for a lot of people that's their only vehicle, and it's stupid to not let them park it in front of their house. They did eventually let you park them, if you cover up the logo, which to me looks even worse then the logo would.
Those are the sort of dumb rules that make all HOAs look bad. I've been a renter all my adult life, so I've never had to deal with that kind of nonsense.

Again that's pretty much how feel about animals. I have a much better understanding of how an animal I run into is going react, but when it comes to people I'm totally clueless.

Oh yeah, me to. When I've run into people with horses on my bike ride, I'v been guilty of being so focused on the a horse that I practically forgot the person was even there.

It's funny when people say that because while I find humans annoying (including myself) I do not understand the love of animals. My kids love animals and want many, including ducks. I just don't get it.

I mean, the horse is right there. What are you going to do? Not say hello?

Of course, I can't not say hello.
To sum up my feelings pretty bluntly, animals are better than people, by like 1,000x.

And there's no where near the amount of bullshit with animals that have to deal with people.
Well, unless you clean up after cattle, then you have to deal with a whole lot of bull shit.
Understanding people goes a long way in lessening the bullshit.

And I have no desire to deal with real shit. Major strike for me with animals.

Well, I'm literally looking for a job cleaning up horse shit, so as you can imagine I'm not bothered by it.

You like animals though. You tolerate their shit better than I. I know my limits and what I'll be doing when invariably my family gets animals.

All I know about them is what I know from the John Oliver segment.

It's at least made me never want to be in an HOA. The idea that arbitrarily appointed people could just arbitrarily levy me huge fines for things as trivial as putting my garbage can in the wrong place with no accountability.

HOAs are *everywhere* here in AZ and listings often crow "NO HOA!" for the few places without them.

I currently live in a neighborhood without them, but it's going a bit downhill. I think if I feel I actually found a place where my fee went to a community pool or something, I'd be willing to check it out.

Thanks for yanking the thread back on topic. I was about to post a cute "thread hijacking" meme.
