Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

Randomly this occurred to me: I had posted on another site a reply when someone said "We need a show about Luke, Leia and Han between the movies." That causes a reflexive response, probably due to parenting, that "Well, no, we don't need such a show as we will continue to survive without such a series." Due to my overthinking nature I then realized that, at least for the 1st World problems, we have reached a place that a need may require a redefinition. To me, need is something for survival: food, clothing, shelter, safety and social connection. Entertainment doesn't fall under that umbrella to me.

So, do I reassess my reflex to correct need or redefine need based on current culture?

Check out scarcity mindset. Your response might have more to do with how you grew up. And it might also be impacting your risk tolerance. And that would carry over to your spending behavior and investing behavior. I know a lot of people that grew up with that have this problem.

While interesting I don't think that's it. There was never risk, or risk that I was aware of, growing up (certainly being older my parents have shared more but overall it wasn't a fear based growing up). Unless I'm misunderstanding, which is always possible.

I think it's more my black and white pedantic tendency that comes out when a word is misused used in my perception. :alienblush:

Need is based on scarcity. That’s my take based on what you wrote.

Listening to Dave Schrader’s Paranormal 60. And I have to ask myself: why do people believe in mediums?

Yes, but of all the resources out there entertainment is the least scare. Where's the need in it?

Power. People desire to believe they have a measure of power and control and mediums offer that opportunity to exert power over something they otherwise feel powerless to manage.

It’s how you spend your money. Are you delaying buying entertainment because you think you won’t have money for food and shelter? Are you spending money on entertainment because you don’t know what money will be available, so you spend it as quickly as it comes in?

I don’t get ghost and mediums and all that stuff. Feels like a con to me. No idea why people perpetually fall for it.

No, no and no. I just don't view entertainment as vital.

I imagine that's it's a measure of soothing and feeling of control over something that we really don't have information on. Missing people who have died, desiring connection again, loneliness, and such are all powerful drivers of human behavior. It's not "falling for it" so much as it's trying to meet an, at times, inexpressible need.

"Feels like a con?"

Of course it's a con. People miss their deceased loved ones and/or they need to believe in an imaginary afterlife for comfort. And there will always be scumbags willing to make a living off the desperation of the grieving or the gullible.

There are different kinds of needs. You are only looking at it from a narrow perspective. You are thinking "need to survive" but I'm sure that was not what was meant. They probably meant that in order to round out the whole saga, it would be nice to have more interim stories. Kind of a tame observation.

As I said in my post is this a word that might need revisiting? Because even the dictionary reflects "need" as, necessity or requiring action.

I initially thought I was being pedantic but just reading multiple different definitions from Oxford and Merriam-Webster and it all points back to necessity, or if no action is taken then there will be a negative impact or deficit to life.

I don't feel this is a "narrow view" when it's reflected in the word's definition. You even use a different word to say "Want." or "It would be nice." That's not the same thing.

Even if that isn't what was meant it's very confusing and puts more importance on entertainment than I believe is actually healthy. I find it troubling in multiple ways, not the least of which is my own pedantic annoyances at misuse of language. But there is another word that suits the purpose fine-it's want. "We need a series about the OT characters" reads far differently than "I want a series."

At least, it seems to me to be painfully clear.
