It's ironic how so many of us Star Trek fans should be concerned with Racism when it's still abundantly clear that as a society the world has made a lot of progress in the last 60 years when it was considered a point of pride to be predjudiced if not overtly racist. Star Trek was a trailblazer in racial integration and tolerance and has always tried to champion the view that race is important but it shouldn't affect how we treat each other. (no I'm not going to comment on "Code of Honour")

Things might be better than 60 years ago, though it should be clear to everyone we still have a long way to go.

You need to use a special drinking fountain, your kids are barred from attending the best schools, and your house gets burned down by neighbors if you buy in the wrong neighborhood?

Not to discount your personal experience, but I doubt it's hardly typical of the experience of the majority of white people in Western Society. Racism is still a pervasive, endemic and persistent in our society.

Hell, an East Indian family just moved in down the street in my small town in Southwestern Ontario, and I've personally witnessed the suttle racism those people have already had to deal with in the form of neighbours putting up security cameras, locking stuff up at night, and all sorts of other things they didn't do before.

They're lovely people btw! They dropped off some delicious chicken curry to my house when they found out I was home recovering from some minor surgery.

I mentioned that to my one neighbour and he said "and you ate that?" Sometimes, I really hate this town.....

So don't tell me racism has gone away.

Blows my mind sometimes the shit that still happens. And unfortunately it took a good friend of mine a lot of work to get their neighbor to not be a dick just because her husband is black (and the nicest guy you'll ever meet).

Long way to go, unfortunately. Better, but still keep moving forward.

I have to be paranoid about the subtleties of what I was expected to grow up thinking and feeling about People Who Don't Look Like Me. Ongoing, because that crap can drag you into stupid and cruel things if you're not paying attention.

You're probably right. I just get ultra annoyed at those who try and insinuate that white people have it rough in any possible way.

Would Christina Chong be considered Asian? She was born in London and is very English from the roles I have seen her in.

That would be like calling me English when I was born in Scotland but my parents are from there.
My grandfather was from Persia originally but my mother wouldn't be considered Asian in any way.

I get so fucking annoyed at racism of any stripe. I was raised to respect people and that judging on race was bad, no matter what. Now, I get told I'm racist because I'm white. Like, ok? I'm not denying systems in culture but I'm doing my best to treat everyone with the same freaking respect. I understand your annoyance but guy the ugliness shows up in different ways in culture. Blows my mind.

I know but she's not from any of those countries. That's what I mean.
