Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Agreed, this is the only post-Sovereign design I've ever seen, canon or otherwise, that screams "Enterprise" to me. Including the Odyssey-class. This should have been the F.

Wouldn't mind in a Legacy series/Paramount+movie/Terry Matalas' fan fiction website, if at some point the G gets another refit and winds up looking like this. It doesn't feel too far off from a Neo-Connie.

Yeah, the dark patches are one of the few things I kinda don't mind from thr STO ships. They definitely saw the Sovereign class and went from there.

On a side note... first time really taking a close look at the Sutherland class; that Bridge looks awfully tiny. Has it been in the pool?

It's roughly the same size as a Nebula class.

Broke out my model of the Sutherland, the Enterprise D bridge is 11 meter by 7 meter wide, the bridge on the sutherland does fit that measurement, with a conference room on the back, and ready room/ crew rest room on the sides.

Square is 10 meters across. So plenty of room
Yellow rectangle in front is person sized.

Fair enough. Happy to be proven wrong.

Okay, let's try this again...

I know that some people really hate the white and black scheme of STO starships, but I think it gives Trek ships a more distinctive look, IMO. Gray or battleship gray spaceships have been done to death by most sci-fi franchises, including Trek, so the STO scheme is doing something a little different.
Similarly over in Star Wars, I like how TCW adjusted the Acclamator-class to have red livery to match the Venator-class instead of being monochrome.

I agree with this somewhat but I also have to point out that every starship has been derivative of the original Enterprise NCC-1701 and there's only so much you can do with a circle and three tubes until it doesn't look like a Star Trek ship anymore. TNG did it best. It resembled the original just enough that you could still call it a Federation Ship. I am too young to have seen it as it was first shown in 87 but I think most people must have been shocked at how different/advanced it looks compared to the Connie. The Disco ships aesthetic is too far removed from the original for my taste. Ships like the Steamrunner whilst very cool are only really recognisable as Star Trek ships by the red bussards and blue plasma glow on the nacelles, oh and the bridge module that is almost always at the top of the ship. I actually really like the Odyssey Class even though some people thing it's fugly. So what if its based on previous ships? Real life hardware is based on what came before it otherwise how could we advance technologically. Yeah the creative teams at Paramount might need some fresh creative juices but at least what we got was recognisable.

The thing is, most casual Star Trek fans watching these shows really don't care what the ships look like. So radically changing a starship design from what we're 'used to' probably isn't as big a deal as people might think. Hell, we got completely different designs for the Klingon ships in DSC season 1 and life still went on ;)

Is there such a thing as a "casual Star Trek fan"? I thought we were all OCD anal retentive maniacs.

Yeah, therein lies the rub...

I've probably mentioned this before, but I was once telling my wife about some Discovery vs Enterprise starship nerd thing and she simply responded, "Oh, I thought they were the same."

But that's true of most casuals reaction relative to ANY nerdy thing.

Casuals won't have the attention to details as us Nerds of ___ subject matter.

But even within Star Trek fandom people are not going to like every detail. I care little for starships but others love the details, registries, outlines and deck plans. That's not for everyone.

Now, me, I enjoy uniforms, variations, noting rank pinks, insignia and such. I have a casual interest in current military uniforms and can spot rank insignia relatively easily for US Armed Services uniforms. I enjoy different states and recognize most state flags.

Details are not just for casuals. It's all in the person too.

Depends on the person. My wife is a detail oriented nerd about Middle Earth, but knows enough about Star Wars and Star Trek to recognize things in passing.

It's personality too.
