Hey, I never noticed that before....

I don't know what subs are like now, but from what I heard, subs were often hot and humid places. So fishnet does make sense! :) And it looks cool. You'll never get me to admit those UFO costumes were bad. I loved almost everything about UFO.
Ironically I just got back from a vacation to San Francisco and I toured the ww2 submarine there. You’re right! One of the things the audio tour said was that the subs were very hot and that the crew were often just in shorts, tshirts and slippers. Modern subs probably have lots of a/c , but the fishnet shirts were probably a nod to the old days. Now, as to the purple hair on moon base?….

The purple hair was supposed to be anti radiation wigs to protect the brain. But as others have pointed out, only the women wore them. It could be the men, who were the anti ufo pilots, had rotating duty, and the women staff of the moonbase had longer exposure... Well its a theory :)

I think I recall reading that the purple wigs were a fashion choice suggested by Sylvia Anderson, and they had no in-universe justification beyond that.

As opposed to a sub crew wearing fishnet shirts, which makes perfect sense!

It's always good to have nets in case a leak allows fish into the sub.

My impression was that the fishnet tops were intended as a sex tease. In the opening credits, you get a glimpse of them on the sub, and also see that a hot woman is among the crew. This fact just flashes by. But if you stay tuned, maybe you'll see more. Anyway, that's how it always struck me.

Nowadays the Internet has saturated the market for sexual content, so movies and TV shows don't even bother, but back then we were very keen to catch whatever glimpses we could get. It was a different world, and I remember it well.

Absolutely right. The wigs were just an accessory for the ladies. Only on moonbase, though, which is still nonsense.

Today they won’t bother with wigs—they’ll just dye their hair purple or green or blue or orange or yellow or pink or grey or whatever the fuck comes to mind. I’m waiting to see plaid.

Doing deeper research, it looks like explanations changed depending. I'd read that it was an accessory, but also found that they were just looking for a way to make the hairstyles fast and easy to do and Sylvia liked purple and it was flattering.

Basically, it looked "spacey."

well, I didn't dream up the anti radiation stuff. It appeared somewhere at the time. Probably show spokespeople were saying whatever seemed "spacey" at the time.

In universe, the women were looking spacey on purpose. They said to each other "If we have to wear these mad silver outfits for duty, lets go it one better and wear punk rocker wigs. We'll see if the men say anything!"

Then the men put up a poker face and pretended not to notice, which angered the women, and the whole thing froze in place: a game of fashion chicken, the new normal. "You want it? You got it."

The psychology of living on the moon, never going anywhere but your quarters, your post, and the dining room, combined with highly distinct gender-specific uniforms, whipped up a team psychology, and pushed the team to become eccentric and peculiar.

So there's more to UFO than meets the eye. It's pretty deep. :)

It was probably less Nimoy and more Roddenberry, who had 15 years of being essentially a new age guru to college kids, that probably made the Vulcans suddenly more mystical.
I think Nimoy has a hippy side, too.

Couple of things I've noticed on a recent rewatch that I hadn't spotted before -

In Let This Be Your Last Battlefield, maybe 6 or so minutes in when they find Lokai's shuttle you can clearly see the stand in for Chekhov sat next to Sulu

In Shore Leave I had never clocked the brilliant Kirk/Spock bromance moment when Kirk is bitching about his back and the Yeoman starts trying to help with it and he is so close in his relationship with Spock that he first assumed that Spock was the one prodding him.

This is simply great writing.

I thought it was a bit strange that Kirk would think Spock would rub his back on the bridge. I could see it maybe after a workout, but the bridge?
Well, we get Captain's Logs on the bridge, and also, apparently, after being kidnapped, etc.
