Star Trek Table-top RPG?

So are they any DnD/Star Wars d20 style RPGs for star trek? Are they any good?

I've just started to get into this stuff so I'm interested in finding out.

I'm guessing this thread should be part of Trek Gaming forum, so I'm sending it there....

Star Trek has never made it to the D20 system, however there have been several Trek RPGs over the years.

The first system I know about was produced by FASA in the mid 80's. Set in mainly the TOS and the Movie time frame. It was a good system to play with a lot a detail on star ships.

Last Unicorn Produced the next System. The RPG itself was not so great in the game play department. On the other hand the background material was great and I still referre to these books to this day.

Decipher has put out the most recent version. I have not been impressed by their game at all. For some reason I never got the feel for their system.

Their is also a RPG based on Star fleet Battles. I have never really taken a look at it so I can not comment.

For my two cents if you can find the old FASA system it is a great place to start. I will give one warning on this system. Making PCs is a pain in the butt. Creation is a long and drawn out process that my group learned to hate.
Once you get past this problem the game runs fairly well and seems to hold up well after 25+ years

Actually, I think the LUG version was pretty good, and the Decipher version likewise, as far as the rules go. For sheer Trek feel, FASA is still the best, IMO.

However, if you want a solid, playable system, I'd go with the Decipher one.

I loved DC's old RPG game from the 80s. I loved the cards, and the charts and wheel they put out. I could easily see STAR TREK converted to that system. Does anyone remember that old DC comics game?

We made our own 100% system. It is sooooo much easier than any of the other systems we've seen. We have so much stuff made now that we could literally fill a book. We have character sheets, templates for characters, starship sheets/stats for every known canonical starship, be it Federation, Romulan, Klingon, ect.
We've introduced a bunch of D&Ders to it and they like our system a lot more than the D20 system and the scores of other confusing RPG systems out there.

Simply put, I have a 25% chance of doing something, not I have a 3D6+1 chance in doing something.

Stick your copywrite on it and post it somewhere.
I'd love to take a look at it, or possibly try it out. :techman:

Various options:

- build your own, either by yourself of with tools like GURPS
- search the internet for someone's own
- track down the Star Trek RPG by Decipher, the good: rules are close to d20 a system which you seem to be familiar with, the bad: discontinued and may be hard to find, they only published a few books some only available as pdf downloads
- track the Star Trek RPG by Last Unicorn Games, the good: many books with plenty of stuff covering a lot of the ST universe, the bad: discontinued so long ago it'll be hard to find them, not that good a system.
- track older books

There is a Prime Directive GURPS sourcebook that may prove very handy if you are familiar with and like that system. Although it's really covers the Star Fleet Battles universe rather than Star Trek per se, I'd imagine 90 percent of the material could be used in a "pure" Star Trek game without any need for conversion. I think there are also Klingon and Romulan supplements, but I'm not absolutely certain about that (of course, these supplements use the Star Fleet Battles versions of these races rather than the versions we see in the movies and later TV series).

There was also a D20 version of Prime Directive released some while back, but I don't know how widely distributed it was. The D20 version also had a Klingon supplement (with some very nifty cover art, as I recall).

Both the D20 and GURPS versions of Prime Directive are in print and available here. There are Klingon and Romulan supplements for both systems, along with deck plans for small Klingon gunboat. I know they did deck plans for a Federation FF as well at some point, but it seems to be no longer in print.
