Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Doug has posted clear renders of the model. The model on the Eaglemoss cover I think is the original model as well.

I'm going to respond to this using words other people have sent to me when I've quoted from the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual: Production team intent isn't canon. Details that aren't visible on camera in an episode aren't canon. Doug Drexler posting it on Facebook doesn't make it canon.

Also – this is hardly the first time an Enterprise has been visually reimagined, is it? These are all supposed to be exactly the same ship after all:

Yes.

I don't remember his exact wording and the post has been pulled as far as I can tell), but would've liked it presented in the context of being a special ability/illustration, not a retcon of the design.

How do we know it isn't a special ability and we're just seeing the Enterprise-J using "transparent mode", as opposed to "opaque mode" reserved for red alert situations etc?

He did say he didn't mind the idea of the hull turning transparent (or the image being presented as a cut-away, I don't remember his exact wording and the post has been pulled as far as I can tell), but would've liked it presented in the context of being a special ability/illustration, not a retcon of the design. He didn't like the saucer being thickened up, but I think that's a reasonable adjustment to the excessively flat original, especially if you're doing to be seeing through it and need some sense of depth.

You think he'd understand the necessity of revising a design that was slapped together in a matter of hours. Especially when the only on-screen appearance was blurry and unclear.

So the 1701 can look radically different in different timelines and at different points in its life but the 1701-J can't?

(Though I think we all know that there's no way the SNW Enterprise is going to wind up looking like the TOS Enterprise...)
For all we know, the J that we saw an image of was designed like it was because of the ongoing war with the Sphere Builders™. Wasn't it that big so as to take people to another galaxy? No Sphere Builders™, no need for that particular ship design.

Even if we ever get to an Enterprise J in Star Trek, no reason to think they'll be handcuffed to that design.
