Lost Sulu scene from Trek 4

How did we get back to Sulu lost two scenes? He did not lose two scenes from the screenplay. He lost a line or two of dialogue here or there like everybody else in the cast but there were no Sulu specific scenes besides the ancestor one that were cut or not filmed.

It's kind of weird that in all of San Francisco he bumps into his ancestor.

It's a pretty big coincidence that Kirk sees a bus ad for a pair of humpback whales at the local aquarium right after the crew arrives in San Francisco. It's a movie and you have to move things along.

I guess, although I think there's more plausibility in running into one over the other. But you're right, it's very coincidental. Like also, what if they came in one day later and the whales had already been harpooned. Kirk's out scooping up humpback whales in the middle of the ocean? I guess with Sulu to me that scene could work whether it's his ancestor or not.

The scene doesn't really have a button if it's not Sulu's ancestor, though. Then it's just Sulu meeting some random Japanese kid in the street. Who cares?

The other question is what if Kirk’s original plan went ahead? Gillian comes into work one day and finds both the whales and the water suddenly missing, and no one having any idea what happened to them.

It would have been a mystery passed into legend like the Mary Celeste.

Interesting. But why would Sulu know classical Japanese and not the modern language? Maybe the idea was that 20th-century Japanese was archaic compared to the 23rd-century version, and he was trying to adjust to the era and overshot by a few centuries, like trying to use Shakespearean English in the Victorian Era.

The novelization runs with that. When he's speaking to the boy, Sulu laments to himself that because of his rather sketchy grasp of Japanese, he probably sounds like a character from The Tale of Genji .

I'm watching ST IV right now. When Sulu and company are walking down the street, right before they reach the Yellow Pages ad (and the arguing couple) there are a lot of kids playing in the alley right next to them. Is Sulu's ancestor supposed to be one of these kids?

Yes, that's where the scene would have been.

Oh yes you're right, just prior to that scene, after Kirk tells the crew to break up.

Count me in for wishing the scene was included. I think it would have been a cool payoff for the, "I was born there ( San Francisco)."
Coincidence? Sure, but in Trek that's par for the course and some welcome extra time for Sulu.

Agreed. Even without that scene, though, it was nice in TVH that the supporting characters got perhaps the most to do of any of the feature films. TUC is probably a close second, since Kirk and McCoy spend a good portion of the movie off the ship.

The thing is, the comic adaptation was hard to come by here. The movie itself was delayed six months Down Under. She wasn’t a comic collector.

But yes, extra scenes in novelizations, comics and trailers are often responsible for the Mandela Effect.



Sulu in the helicopter yes, and the windscreen wipers scene, but not how he obtained it.

There was no TV version of ST III.

Adults read comics too, even back then. I didn't get into comics until I was 17, in the same year ST IV came out.
