Spoilers Best or Biggest Takeaways from Season 3

Therefore he's still in the Nexus.
Now this would be a helluva way to end the series, and Picard's journey. It would negate everything after, like 3/4s of Generations though that pertained to Picard/TNG, etc.

1) A lot of the critics of PIC just wanted it to be Alien and other 80s/90s films.

2) Star Trek: Enterprise matters.

3) Despite how S3 was marketed, PIC S1 & S2 still mattered to some degree.

4) Worf became a captain, meaning Sisko was wrong.

5) Ro’s redemption arc.

6) Geordi found someone at long last to have a family, and it doesn’t look like its Dr. Leah Brahms.

7) Raffi’s past as a drug addict was put to use in S3.

8) Jurati, Rios, Elnor, Soji, & Kestra were afterthoughts.

9) Shaw joined the Voyager crewmembers not named Neelix that weren't resurrected by Seven’s nanoprobes.

10) Everything and everyone on Daystrom Station.

11) Jack seems to have no remorse for what he’s done.

12) Matalas and his team undid a bunch of messes created by the Berman era:
  • undid the destruction of the Ent-D, with it now restored and taking its rightful place at the museum
  • undid the demise of Data
  • gave Star Trek its first series finale in 18 years, and in the process, produced a series finale that’s actually a Valentine to the fans
  • continuing/completing the NX-01’s story with the refit and its place at the museum
  • finally got rid of the Borg Queen while answering what happened to the Borg after the VOY finale
  • the first steps to a Voyager reunion
  • a proper sendoff for the TNG crew
  • Troi can fly without crashing
  • using Dr. Crusher

10) Non sequitur;

11)And...?

12) Nope.

We still don't know where that giant scary transwarp conduit that opened at the end of Season 2 goes. The one that the Jurati collective is guarding.

Out of universe, I guess that was intended to form the basis of the Season 3 arc before Matalas took it in a different direction. In-universe, perhaps we'll never hear of it again.

I'm imagining it was a failed plan by the 'real' Borg Queen to destroy the Federation before she linked up with the rogue Changelings.

Probably not. Since the seasons overlapped each other. Fodder for the Legacy show, though.

Another takeaway: rather than go to Starfleet Academy, if you have powerful friends in Starfleet (such as Admiral Janeway and Picard) you can make it to Captain in less than 10 years of continuous service with a break in the middle to be a space pirate.

Were the Ranger's pirates? I thought they were out there taking up the slack left by Starfleet.

If your parents are both admirals, you can be special counselor to the captain...

Best takeaways for me are that Data is alive and I love how he is. I didn't realise how much I missed Data.

I didn't even mind the deus ex machina being Deanna's empathic powers suddenly knowing how to precisely locate people for transport. The sappy romance of it being Will's last message to her was sweet.

It's not strictly canon because it wasn't on screen, but Matalas said in a tweet after Episode 9 aired that the conduit was from the Borg in the Delta Quadrant. It was a "fake out" to conceal the Queen's true plan with Jack. She wanted to keep Starfleet busy with another crisis so she could hatch her plan. The Jurati Borg are still "guarding the gate."

Matalas was chiefly responsible for the Prime universe 25 century parts of Season 2, though its unclear what role he played in the origination of the Transwarp conduit idea (it may have been, for example, Goldsman's idea of an "Portal by an aggressor" given a Star Trek name of "Transwarp Conduit"), so at least for now, we can consider that a settled matter.

Maybe one way Legacy would go, now that the Borg are gone, is that this gate ends up being Starfleet's permanent quick access point to the Delta Quadrant.

This is such a great post.
I would also add
  • - It potentially offers a way of undoing the (bad) death of Captain Kirk too (with a new actor), if someone wants to run with it.
  • - Gave us an answer to "did more stuff happen with Section 31" (yup.. it became public).
  • - Resolved the question of "What's up with Lore?"
  • - Gave Data the best way of becoming human... turns out none of Soong's androids could ever be truly human, but together all of them (and Lal) could be. I think that's brilliant.,
  • - Finally made clear some of the long term consequences of the Dominion War. It was nice to see it be something the Enterprise crew experienced, even off camera.
  • - Moved the look of Starfleet past relying on 23rd century ships, and the new nearly 30 year old First Contact designs.
  • - Gave us a great overall production style for Starfleet, 23 years after Nemesis
  • - Got rid of the terrible Season 1 Borg look and refined/modernized the Voyager/FC look. Also made the Borg, appropriately, superhuman and aggressive, which we only previously saw snippets of.
  • - Gave us our most threatening Borg vehicle ever. It was the size of a small moon.
  • - Integrated the TNG intro into the storytelling (at the start of Episode 10) in truly the most fantastic way.
  • - Made very creative use of ALL of the TNG's film music, including the much ignored Generations score.
  • - Gave Geordi the growth past Season 7 that we only saw snippets of in the films and his Voyager appearance. It was perfect he, Riker and Picard were the last three on the 1701-D bridge.

There's a lot more but gosh, it did everything it needed to. The TNG cast really had some of their best performances ever. And the new actors just shined.

I do think the MVPs of the season were Gates McFadden and Jonathan Frakes though. Patrick Stewart took a kind of back seat role for much of the season and Brent Spiner, finally back as Data, was much less at the center of the production than at any time he's been in Trek since TNG Season 6 (he's great, but his promotion came at the expense of others). McFadden and Frakes had so many of the best scenes though. So many of the best lines and emotions. They gave it their all and the show was far better for it. The TNG films are far worse for sidelining them for the guest star (which it didn't need). It was a real missed opportunity.

Ok, I'll try to be positive, because even though I thought it was really really poor there's obviously some nice things there too.

: Riker. He was the real star of the show. He exuded such warmth and humility every single time that he was on screen. Absolute pleasure to see him do his thing.
:Amanda Plummer. She was terrific too and deserved so much better.
:The Enterprise bridge was lovingly restored.
:Special effects and the look of the show was good. I don't really care about it being too dark or whatever... if it works it works and, for the most part, I thought the general look fully reflected the feel of the show.
:: Struggling now lol
:Oh, it reminded me of the essential component that's required in any film, show or whatever. An absolute necessity really. If it's not in the screenplay from the start, you're in big trouble. It's everything.

(Jonathan Frakes even. Riker! Behave yourself Cortez, but sure that's a compliment to him really, isn't it? He always had a certain charm about him, and it's even more evident now as he's aged. Great stuff.)

Terry Matalas fucking hated seasons one and two, I have never seen a show undermine it's own prior seasons quite as deliberately and aggressively. He said "fuck you" for caring about any part of what happened prior.

I've never enjoyed a season of a show while having so many huge issues with it before. It's very complicated. Smiling, laughing, fuming.

Something something about the lights being too dark.

But really, given the cast's age, it's unlikely we'll get all seven main TNG characters together again. And I don't foresee any of the other Trek casts of the Berman era reuniting, so I'm grateful for what we got, knowing full well nothing like season 3 will ever happen again in Trek.
