Spoilers Continuation of 25th Century Trek?

The anti-nostalgists on the board are making argument that boils down to "I don't connect with the characters/things being nostalgized and thus it is bad." Everything else is just aesthetics really. My suspicion is most Trek fans are fine with nostalgia if it is THEIR nostalgia. The thing is though is that this is fine. People can enjoy or not enjoy aspects of the franchise as they want to. You can quibble and say "what did you expect a show about JLP to be about" but then you just get into semantics and subjective degrees of what is acceptable nostalgia and what is "distracting" (this is a dumb framing but whatever) nostalgia.

The broad view is that right now they are trying, with varying degrees of success, to offer different flavors of Trek to appeal to old and new fans in various ways. It's not a bad strategy, and is logical for the streaming landscape. We'll see how successful it is!

That's the more important thing. I want the variety and being told that nostalgia is the only way is off putting. It's more than off putting, it comes across as "Well, we don't want you to come along." And that's a hard place to be in a franchise.

Nostalgia doesn't necessarily bother me. Seeing the Enterprise D again was great as were some of the other call backs. This is the same universe after all. My position is that nostalgia is not a substitute for a well written story. Seeing the Enterprise D again doesn't make me forget the issues I have with this season's plot. So I'm not going to give the episode a 10 simply for seeing the characters back on the bridge when I had problems with the story.

As someone who ugly cried at the last 7 minutes of ep 9 and watched it probably 50 times now I don't disagree!

SNW has Spock, Uhura, AND the original Enterprise. That's a nostalgia show, folks.
Can't say I really agree. Yes, it's nostalgic to see some of the characters, namely Spock. But most of the characters are either new, or we know very little about them on a personal level.

Characters such as Uhura and Chapel were not exactly well developed. The series persents us a chance to really develop those characters into truly well rounded individuals.

Now the setting of the Enterprise could be viewed as nostalgic, the series itself is not. The episodes are almost entirely about going out and discovering something NEW. New species, new planets, etc. You can't be nostalgic for a place you've never been.

Now it could potentially be argued that the whole narrative structure of the series is nostalgic in that it returns to the episodic "planet of the week" trope. Though I would just view that as a pretty standard television format.

SNW has Spock, Uhura, AND the original Enterprise. That's a nostalgia show, folks. As was a large part of S2 of Disco. Prodigy has Janeway. LD is new characters, but is a MASSIVE TNG/DS9/VOY era loveletter.

The only shows/seasons that weren't nostalgic?

1) TOS (couldn't be)
2) Enterprise (also impossible)
3) DISCO S3 & S4

TNG did a little, but they really had no choice given the time elapsed. A McCoy cameo in the debut. Scotty & Spock eventually. Kirk in Generations.
With respect to Enterprise, sorry but season 4 was very nostalgic for TOS fans in that they did a lot of connecting the dots and showing stuff that had been mentioned but never shown in TOS, so in that respect it did manage a bit of nostalgia. An episode where such nostalgia was on full display was the two-part ENT S4 In A Mirror Darkly episodes, which had the USS Defiant and the Tholians from TOS.

I have to wonder how well a "Legacy" show would work without the full TNG connection. Folks have bandied about Shaw , Seven and/or the Titan bridge crew as the cast. But like TNG, duplicating PIC3's success might be like catching lightning in a bottle.

Apparently Terry Matalas setup the ending so that it can be a potential introduction to the new crew for a show he would want to helm called "Star Trek: Legacy" following the adventures of Captain Seven & her crew.

AMAZING, but still a spoiler for me. Grrrr. I am pleasantly spoiled though.

Captain Seven of Nine of the G Thang! :adore:

I was hoping for a new ship design, but the Titan is cool. I know that Terry loves that ship, and we have grown to love it too. :D

Never in a million years would I have expected Seven of Nine to be Captain of the Enterpise but I would be happy to see a show based on it. She’s a great character and Ryan does a great job. I loved the Titan crew too. It would be a lot of fun I think.

I actually predicted a Seven of Nine captain of the Enterprise premise for the next series. However I didn't forsee the renaming of the Titan. I suspect the renaming was not even Terry's preference. I think it was solely a marketing thing to try to sell it to Paramount. checks allot of boxes...female lead and one that is talented , marketable and greatly appreciated already (and yes, the camera lens likes her too) ... strong brand recognition with the Enterprise and the next next generation . No offense to Kate Mulgrew , but 7 is more marketable right now . That's why you often see 7 in multigenerational trek collages amoung Kirk, Picard and Spock.

I wonder if Mulgrew was asked (to be in the finale)and she declined subconsciously because of 7 being centre focus again and now captain of the new Enterprise .And instead they got Tuvok. Don't kil me, it's a wild theory of mine with no confirmed basis in actuality .

I'm conscious that a Seven of Nine show was Plan B if Patrick Stewart hadn't agreed to return, and it wouldn't have taken much to reframe the Season 1 story around her, the xBs and the Romulans.

I'm not sure how I feel about a Captain Seven show. Part of her appeal is that she's always butted against Starfleet and authority, from Janeway to Shaw. Having her as a lone gun is one thing, Captain of a Starfleet ship is another.

My concern would be that making her the lead will take that edge away, in a similar way that making Burnham the captain undermined the strengths of her character.

I'm open enough to it, if Matalas thinks he's got an idea to sustain it, but I don't have the same burning desire to see that show as I did for a continuing Pike series.

In terms of the wider issue of returning 90s characters, I'm ambivalent. I found I did enjoy seeing the TNG reunion this season, but there was always a sense of unfinished business with them. That's now been addressed.

It seems inevitable that Voyager characters will play some part in a Seven show, as they already have in Prodigy, and I have no real feelings about that.

I feel like we left the DS9 characters in a good place and there isn't much more to be said. But the Lower Decks episode was a lot of fun so I'm not against revisiting some of them, if there's a story that justifies it. I'm just not sure what that would be.

Would have Rathered Shaw had been captain for the first year or 2 then let seven be captain. She's been in starfleet what? a year or 2? Now she has a ship of her own. Let her season under Shaw for abit.

Rather them do a completly new crew, but I doubt I'll get that.

It’s always been my dream for Seven to be Captain of the Enterprise, since Voyager! I cannot believe it’s actually happened. I bet @Danja is happy too, though I do not know how she feels about the Enterprise now that it has been officially announced as she never expected this ship. Technically, the ship is also still *kind of* the Titan…. and Raffi *is* her number one…

Has anyone noticed that Terry Matalas is stating "Nothing is in Development at Paramount for Star Trek Legacy"

Though the production company Secret Hideout is contracted to produce Trek content for Paramount, and that is who Terry has been employed with for Picard.

Sometimes you have to go into legal/politician speak to read between the lines.

*Just being a little hopeful here. :)
