Spoilers Picard News & Reviews from Outside Sources

Do you have a better set of data to indicate how successful these films were relative to one-another?
Nope. We don't. But we really shouldn't be stating points. that we honestly can't know. The data gives us really on one solid point, and that was how much money was spent at the box office. It doesn't even give us admissions.

Pretending the data provides accurate information to make other judgments is not logical. At best it's us making best guesses with a small fraction of the data needed to speak with any authority on the subject.

It's the best data we have, and a lot of your argument about marketing costs strikes me as entirely besides the question of how popular the movie actually is.

Absolutely bonkers.

On the other hand:

Doesn't it make sense for the the average episode to be...average? I'm sure he's not actually using any kind of formal grading method for assigning his scores, but in principle a normalized distribution should have most of [whatever] falling in the middle of the curve.
I'm pretty sure I've explained how I rate things in the past but, here's the short version:

0-4 = Some level of "bad"
6-10 = Some level of "good"
5 = Neither "good" nor "bad". So, meh.

If you like a show, then, on average, you'd think you'd find an episode "good" more often than not. "Bad" or "meh" would be the exception, not the rule. Otherwise, someone should re-evaluate why they're watching what they're watching.

If I put on a show, then I'm expecting I'll think it's good.

EDITED TO ADD: If you want the full meaning of my ratings, it goes:

10 = Outstanding (either "the best of the best" or the best episode if I curve the season)
9 = Excellent (better than most episodes, but something's missing to put it at the top)
8 = Very Good / Great (the standard rating I'd give something I really like)
7 = Good (the standard rating I'd give something I like)

6 = Fair (Kind of Good, it kills time)
5 = Mediocre (does nothing for me, good or bad)
4 = Poor (Kind of Bad, not the best way to kill time)

3 = Bad (but still watchable)
2 = Very Bad (hard to watch)
1 = Terrible (I had to use will-power to keep from turning it off)
0 = Atrocious (I couldn't make it through)

I give most of DSC an 8 because I honestly really like the show (as everyone on this board knows). As far as PIC Season 3, I have to re-evaluate my ratings for it when it's done. I've given too many 10s. Though my ratings aren't actually a measurement of quality, they're a measurement of my enjoyment level.

If you like a show, the average good episode will be middle of the pack for that show. Hence my comment about normalizing the ratings. In other words, a "5" for Star Trek will be much better than a 5 for, say, Andromeda. It's the same sort of scale Jammer tends towards, and if Bernd is thinking that way, issuing a lot of 5 ratings isn't incompatible with liking the series overall.

On the other hand, he clearly hates Discovery and I recall him handing out a lot of 4s and 5s for that, so...

There's no evidence he was vetoed by anyone.

He was in the writers room, he was showrunner for half the season, it was his idea to have a time travel story.
Kurtzman is a known dictator and difficult to work with when he is set in his ways and plotlines. Terry did not have to deal with his shit in season 3 and did not have to fight him tooth and nail to take risks - unlike season 2.

Kurtzman had nothing to do with Season 2's story. He has no writing credits on Season 2. I don't even recall him giving any interviews for Season 2 from a creative's perspective.

He was all over Season 1 with Chabon, but I don't see any evidence of his involvement with Season 2.

Sounds eerily like the Filoni/Favreau vs. Kennedy situation over there at the other Star franchise.
Star Wars is even worse because Kennedy isn't even a writer. You can blame Kurtzman for some creative choices, because he is a showrunner and writer on Discovery (and one episode of Picard Season 1). But Kennedy doesn't have a creative hand in things.

A dictator is a pretty harsh term to throw at someone without evidence to back it up. Kurtzman oversees the franchise but has largely let Michelle Paradise, Mike McMahon, the Hageman brothers, Akiva Goldman and yes, Terry Matalas oversee their shows with not a lot of meddling. We have very different interpretations of Star Trek with Discovery, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds and Picard.

If Kurtzman exerted more control, all the shows would have much more sameness.

If he had complete control of season 2, and not vetoed by higher ups, it would have been a far better season.
Yawn.

Yawning intensifies.
