PIC Season 3 compared to other Late Sequels

I don’t know where I’d rank the season but there’s nothing that other than the nostalgia bits (again, I give them the credit for bringing the feels at the end of episode nine) that would have me rank this anywhere but in the middle of the pack for me personally. It’s not the worst thing ever. But I sure as hell don’t see the amazing piece of storytelling some do either.

See, that's funny to me. It's amazing the variety of opinions on this season from all corners of the fandom. I dunno where this ranks for me, but if I were to really give it thought, I can't imagine it would even crack the top 10. I mean, without ranking them..... in no particular order...
TOS seasons 1-2
SNW season 1
TNG seasons 3-5
DS9 seasons 5-6
VOY season 4
ENT seasons 3-4
PRO season 1
LD seasons 1-3
DIS seasons 1-2

I'd put them all above Picard S3
But that's me.
Careful. You are not allowed to say anything positive about Discovery. According to many "fans" here it is the worst show ever made. Worse than Cop Rock.

Meh. It's hardly my favourite series, but I give it credit for trying out new things and new ideas. If it's remembered for nothing more then the series that tried to do things a little differently, there's worse things to be remembered for.

And who doesn't love Cop Rock!?

Precisely so. And I was onboard...until this last episode. Now, not so much.

It's fine that they went with nostalgia but please don't tell me that "This is Star Trek" when what is meant is "this is nostalgia and in the feels." At least be honest about why you like it, rather than claiming all the perfection of this season and it's writing the ship and stuff. No, it got us in the nostalgia feels. And when that wears off, then what?

I agree that a lot of this season is more about the nostalgia than the plot, and I'm fine with it. But personally, I didn't find Vox as nostalgia heavy as The Bounty.

However, I also don't think the writing has been terrible. Yes, there are some contrivances (more so in the lead ups to the story than the storyitself), but I'm still enjoying the journey.

Also, I suspect I'll still get rewatch value from this in the future, just as I still do whenever I watch Trials and Tribble-ations. I really don't think there's that much of a plot in that, but it's still enjoyable telly.

Actually, the nostalgia I'd probably like more than we have is that stuff that's often referred to as "Piller Filler". The light hearted stuff that filled in the length of scripts. Often, those were my favourite parts of TNG.

People say positive things about it all the time. At least in the Discovery subforum.

STD betrayed what Star Trek is all about, and abused canon by changing things that did not need changing.

Luke's arc in TLJ is one of the few things carried over from Lucas' sequel ideas fwiw.
It's also totally in character, makes sense with how it was set up in 7 and pays off with him becoming the mythic hero at the end everyone wanted to see, inspiring the galaxy.

I have my issues with the sequel films (i think 7 and 9 are pretty awful) but Luke's arc was one of the best parts and Hamill killed it acting wise!

AFAIK, the only thing brought over from Lucas's ideas was Luke being a hermit on an ocean planet. I don't believe his reasoning for being a hermit came from Lucas.

Calm yourself.

:borg: I'm seeing vast majority praise for this across the socials (Twitter, YT, etc). Places where much larger groups of audiences post how much they enjoyed it.

While there will never be everyone on board, having near unanimous praise for this and Ep 10 is awesome.

And like I said earlier, there are some fans (bless them) who even hate The Wrath of Khan out there, so I recognize mileage varies.
LOL. I'm calm. I'm not the one using the Royal We!

Factually, there is a divide in opinion. Some people really love it. Others think it's overblown fan fiction.

Personally, I'm trying to enjoy it as closure to TNG era. I just wish there was a bit more to it than spectacle.

Some prefer to get there themselves. Not to be told how to think because “everyone else is doing it.” People like things that remind them of other things. That’s how it goes. I would love in one year to ask everyone to revisit this season and see how it fares. I’m going to bet once the absolutely understandable nostalgia wears off people are going to start to see the holes. And I’m going to get that those who are critical are probably going to see it a little bit better. At the moment, I rate it overall a C-. Honestly, after I can sit on it for awhile and maybe revisit it away from people (like you) telling me it’s the best thing ever, it’s probably going to land as a B- season for me with the best parts being Jonathan Frakes as a whole and the Ro episode.
I don't usually rewatch a series right after watching it the first time through. But I think I'll go through the whole thing again fairly soon.

Thing is, I really want to enjoy it. The NG cast surely deserves a nice send off. I did really like earlier parts of this season more than most recent Trek.

But I'm souring on it a bit as the season wears on. There's too much spectacle and too little substance. At least that's how it seems to me right now.
