Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

I may be one of the few people who doesn't mind the U.S.S. Shran. It's a round mid-23rd century version of the Defiant with integrated warp nacelles. Plus no ugly spiky and pointy bits.

I still like those ship designs. They look like natural variations of the NX-01 school of thought, while integrating other member world design aesthetics to it.

I too am a fan of the T’Plana’hath, because of its similarity to the NX-01 (a design I’ve never actually liked, but I respect the design lineage Eaves was going for.) But all the other ships look like they could have been constructed post-TMP rather than pre-TOS. I’m glad to see that SNW is making an effort to design ships more in line with the visual style of TOS rather than DSC.

If it makes you feel better, they’re still using the Magee class in 2387 in Star Trek: Picard. Either that, or they’re brand new ships that coincidentally look like ships from 140 years ago. Ya’ know, Starfleet’s ‘nostalgia’ kick, and all.

in a fun, coincidental, way. STO's lore reason for having the Discovery ships suddenly show up in STO, was finding an old repair yard that had been abandoned in the 2250s because of some anomaly or space thing making it too dangerous to go there until it cleared up in the 2400s.

Fits right in with the Miranda classes and Saratoga classes that liked to show up ;)

What surprises me is how accepting the FX team seem to be when it comes to using computer game and expanded universe ships instead of wanting to design their own.

Unless I'm uninformed and the current team did design these ships

The budget for this show is pretty slim compared to years and series past. STO assets are generally well designed in terms of geometry flow and such and only need a minor bit of upscaling for the tv series.

Its worth noting that we only saw brand new designed ships on rare occasions in TNG, DS9, VOY and Such.

"That Akira you guys like so much?"

[*Proudly points to self*]

"Where'dya think the design came from?"
He kept going for it once in a while.
Matsumoto class, STO.

In the novel Last Full Measure, Trip secretly helped design the Constitution class.

I don't know a lot about FX but if my FX company was chosen to make Star Trek I would throw in the new ships for free.

I understand it in the model days but not now ( I do hate the amount of TMP etc. ships in TNG and DS9 )

It's a matter of time. My friends who do VFX for a living spend so much time trying to fix things, and make shots work based upon the script, and render times all adds up to make for very short work times.

The use of the STO assets was purely a budgetary reason. And a correct one, in my opinion. Generic far background ships don’t have to be as detailed or well-designed, because they’re not meant to be seen up close; they’re just padding. It’s no different from when DS9’s later seasons used model kits as far background ships because they no longer had access to the original filming models.

Now with that said, I don’t particularly care for the actual ships they chose, but I get why they used the assets in the first place. Four ships that are basically derivatives of the Galaxy, Nebula, Miranda and DSC Shepard classes are hardly original choices, or make sense in-universe. But again they’re just background ships, so it’s not that big a deal.

The FX team doesn't design ships, the concept artists do that.

The Shrike is a new design, the Intrepid is a new design (sort of), the Eleos is a revamped version of an unused Eaves design, but he has been doing that for ages now.

Part of me wants the finale to involve all of the museum ships involved in some kind of grand rescue, each captained by a TNG crewmember (and Shaw) with Picard I charge of a rebuilt D that Geordi had secretly been rebuilding inside the museum. Yeah it's the ultimate fanw*nk but I just don't care. I want to see the Big D. It would make sense in the grand scheme of things as the other PIC ships can "talk to each other" so the older ships won't be able to be tracked as easily especially if they use some techno babble to conceal warp trails. Or they have a replica ENT C built to match the Rachel Garett Statue and our crew takes charge of that to give the Ambassador Class some much wanted attention. Either way if this is the last hoorah for the TNG gang they might aswell turn it up to 11!

Imagine an E-D with type 11 Phaser Arrays, Quantum Torpedoes and Double Shields. Geordi can throw out a couple of lines "We couldn't just leave her there on Narendra. 4 years to retrieve all the pieces and info, 16 to rebuild her in all her glory... With some.. minor modifications. This is my Magnum Opus Admiral - using it as a test bed for all kinds of new tech. I wouldn't provoke her Jean-Luc, she's got a lot more bite than she used to..."
