I said "racist idiots in the DC metro area want the Redskins name back."

I didn't say all fans of the team wanted the name back, nor did I generalize.

Edit: It's similar to the outrage over certain Cleveland Indians fans throwing a fit over the team being renamed the Guardians.

Yeah, you kind of did. But since they are perceived as “racists” (people I’m sure you’ve never actually met), it’s obviously ok. :rolleyes:

I lived in Baltimore for a year and traveled to DC and the NoVA area quite a bit for work. I met my fair share of knuckleheads during that time.
 
I lived in that area for nearly 40 years before moving away and I’ve met a few too. Most of them, however, are good people. Even the ones who wish they did have the old team’s name back (gasp - the horror!). I still think it’s an unnecessarily bullshit bully thing to say. I really hope you feel better about yourself by doing so. I can’t imagine any other useful reason for it, other than boosting your superior little ego by looking down at those insufferably ignorant country rubes. Bet you wish they’d all fucking choke on a chicken bone, and stop breathing your air, don’cha?

I have no issue with the DC / NoVA area. I loved living in Baltimore.
 
:lol: "Secure" people don't make consistent loud and proud pejorative pronouncements against mass quantities of others with whom they disagree philosophically. Whether it's hiding bravely behind a keyboard or beating the shit out of someone in an alley, it's still forcing one's will on others - the very textbook definition of a bully.

Oh shit, yeah, I forgot about that one! And apparently someone said up-thread that "Space Commanders" was apparently also suggested to rename the Washington Whatevers.

I mean, like Steelers it only works because of history in the Green Bay case. Somebody tries that today and it probably will get met with derision too. And "youthful horses" is a pretty old symbol for energy and virility. :p

For me at least it's just so... boring. Corporate? It sounds like a bland "Insert Team Nickname" from early-2000s Madden Create-a-Team. It's certainly better than racist! And obviously the renaming of any big corporate entity like an NFL team is going to be about corporate interests, but it feels like Snyder company just went "Well we've gotta have something."

That's a case where the idea is that the nicknames are... actual nicknames though. Even if they're kind of boring (like my Juventus' being known as "The Bianconeri" [White-Black]) or strange ("The Old Lady") it fits the culture as MLS is trying to become more in line with the rest of world soccer - at least, that's my sense? I mean if you look up Italian or English or Mexican clubs they tend to have several nicknames.
 
Soccer teams historically had a very strong connection to their local area, very different from the American corporate franchise model. Teams were usually named after the city or neighborhood they played in and the fans typically came up with nicknames for them. I much prefer that idea, it's far more organic and feels more real than how we do it over here.

It's feels so high school level, especially when there were far better marketable names on the table. Red Hogs had some kind of connection to their defensive line in the 80's.

I also hated Guardians when it was chosen. Spiders was a name that had some tradition in Cleveland and wouldn't have been any more goofy than Guardians.

During a press conference today, the Ravens told reporters that they were not to mention Lamar Jackson by name.

One reporter did in beginning a question about the team's quarterback situation, and they immediately removed that reporter from the media room.

"Guys, don't ask any questions about the most relevant story going on in our organization." Superb look by the Ravens organization.
