Michelle Yeoh, Oscar Winner

Tomorrow Never Dies is my favorite Bond film, and Yeoh is part of the reason why.

(fun fact: In that film, during the fight scene in the bicycle shop, none of the film's regular stuntmen had the guts to do the scene because of Yeoh's fighting style. So they had to call in Jackie Chan's stunt team!)

She started out as a dancer. She's never been a martial artist in the traditional sense.

In one of her earliest films, the director asked her if she could do martial arts. She thought, "I'm a dancer! It's choreography. I can do that!"

That's how she ended up doing martial arts films.

"Jackie Chan thought women belonged in the kitchen – until I kicked his butt." - 'nuff said.

I'm very happy for her win. Well deserved for both this excellent movie and her ridiculously long list of accomplishments.

IIRC she wanted to become a professional dancer but an injury caused her to give that up, so she switched to acting.

Congrats to Michelle. If S31 is not happening then they should add a scene with her in the season 5 reshoots.

Of course they would....but would they pay? That's the question. Plus, would it interrupt her from working on more prestigious material?

I hope they can make it work. Her presence on such a show, regardless of her Oscar win, feels essential. She's an incredibly charismatic actress and her character is magnetic. Starting a show like S31 without her feels somewhat useless to me.
In a number of interviews where they were going over her career and talking about and promoting Everything Everywhere All At Once (and this during the time they were talking about the Oscar buzz for the film); she mentioned more than once that Alex Kurtzman and her would get to do Section 31. And she also did Star Trek Discovery after her star was on the rise from her part in Crazy Rich Asians.

She's done a number of streaming series roles after Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Whoopi Goldberg was an Oscar winning, and she wanted to and did appear on Star Trek the Next Generation for 5 Seasons: and even appeared on season 2 of Star Trek Picard.

So I think it's a combination that if what they've come up with for her to do in Section 31 is interesting to her; and it's something she wants to be a part of, and what kind of deal Paramount can make with her.

There's also the fact that Paramount+ is planning to expand its services into the Asian market; and they're not just wholeheartedly flashing production on a whim; they're just starting to make choices aligned more with their marketing strategy. So if they want to expand into the Asian market, a Star Trek series with Michelle Yeoh as the lead would fit that strategy very well.

Again that doesn't mean it's going to happen; but just because she's now won an Oscar, no I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility at all.

But time will tell.

It's not outside of the realm of possibility, but I think you're not taking into account the fact that Paramount+ is under immense pressure to cut costs right now. Given that Yeoh's fee almost certainly went up on Sunday night, there's a strong chance that Paramount+ just won't be able to afford her. (And also that their plans to expand into the Asian market might not survive.)

Also, Whoopi Goldberg having a small recurring role on TNG after winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Ghost in 1990 really isn't equivalent to being the lead actor on a series after winning Best Lead Actress.

So basically, you agree with me that it's not out of the realm of possibility. I don't see where I argued anything else then that.

The intended tone was conversational, not argumentative; I apologize if that didn't come across.

I haven't even seen the film but I was hoping all these Everything Everywhere dudes would win Oscars. I'm not big on weird multiverse stuff much but I loved Swiss Army Man so maybe I'll give it a go in a few years.

Yeoh just likes to work. In addition to several movie projects, I think she's already doing two new TV shows (one for Disney+ and another for Netflix). The longer Paramount+ waits, the less available she'll be, IMO.

I think we're somewhat saying the same thing except I'm more pessimistic and you're more optimistic about it. Nothing wrong with either perspective. I'm totally a Debi Downer. LOL!!!

I somewhat disagree a bit about Whoopi and her involvement. She was a Trek fan inspired by Uhura since she was a kid. I mean to say that her involvement in Star Trek isn't the same as any other actor who may have won those types of awards since she was already a fan. She was also a guest star, not a lead but I'll take Yeoh as a guest star happily.

As you say, we'll just have to be patient.

Only other thing I would say is that if Star Trek: Georgiou does happen, I hope Phillipa is working for Starfleet Intelligence to bring down Section 31 instead of working for them.

If they really want to make a series with Yeoh, I say fuck Section 31 and the Emperor entirely. Let's say the Guardian sent Mirror!Georgiou back to the sarcophagus ship during the Battle of the Binaries to rescue and replace the original Georgiou. Mirror!Georgiou was thus the one shot and killed by Burnham, and the original is at large in the galaxy, free for whatever premise they want to dream up.

At this point, you have to go wink wink nudge nudge. Having Michelle Yeoh back is really just about having Michelle Yeoh back, if that can happen. You just have to go with it. This is all fiction, it's not real. It's about the actor. I would even be okay with Michelle Yeoh coming back as Georgiou's daughter or twin. Who really cares? Don't answer that.

The "No, but, blah-blah-blah-blah!!!!" people are losing sight of the Bigger Picture. This is Show Business. It's all made up and they change things as they go along. So go along with it. Whatever they'd come up with, they'd make it work. Whatever they find inconvenient, they'll ignore, or come up with a work-around for the people who need that in order to move on.

EDIT: For all we know, The Guardian of Forever turns her into a Reincarnation in a different time period than the Mid-23rd Century. So she'd be her own parallel descendent. Or, more simply: The Guardian fundamentally changes her being, so now she's like Angel or Xena. They can do all kinds of things.
