Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins is Directing a Rogue Squadron Movie

So far as I'm aware, the Ryan Johnson thing has only ever been just a stated desire by both parties to work together on more movies down the line, and Johnson's own stated ambitions. Nothing solid has ever been promised, let alone announced.

Currently he's pre-occupied, so I wouldn't expect movement on it one way or another for a few years at least.

Cough.

I mean, that announcement was from 2017 and I agree that it’s going to be some time. But I’m also wondering if he’s not going to be doing X-XII and is waiting until the time is right. If that’s the case, why they decided to announce that when they did, I have no idea.

Now I wait for the inevitable “Rian Johnson ruined Star Wars” responses.

Of course not. Kathleen Kennedy ruined it by hiring Rian Johnson. :) Actually she didn't ruin the franchise. She ruined the sequel trilogy and OBI WAN show but the rest of Star Wars is just fine. Well except 2 of the 3 prequels. And the Christmas Special and those Ewok movies in the 80's. Those were ruined by George Lucas.

Oh well, the Rian Johnson trilogy is still definitely coming soon though. ;)
I think I saw an article somewhere that was dated to sometime in the last few days that still claimed it was happening.
They'll be threatening us with this thing forever.

the financials seem to be tightening, not loosening, so investing in a movie involves committing money they may not feel that they have right now.
There comes a point where deliberation and caution shade into incompetence and cowardice.

Fair enough, but even that is a pretty soft announcement. No dates of any kind, not even a vague premise of what it might actually be about, when in the timeline it's intended to take place, or who they might have in mind for the cast. Like I said, more a statement of intent than anything substantive.
Also consider the timing; TLJ was just about to come out, and the company was already under the same financial squeeze that prompted Solo's premature release half a year later. This feels more like publicity for the sake of publicity to make in investors feel better about themselves.

There was a lot of stuff in TLJ that I liked, and also a lot of stuff in TLJ that I didn't like. (But you could probably say the same for a whole lot of other SW films!)

Pretty much my experience nowadays. Few things are "the worst ever" or ruined things" in a franchise. There are some that are good, some that are bad, and some that are just not for me. Mandalorian has a mixture of both, with the lore building and ancillary character being some of the better aspects, while the main character leaves much to be desired. Same with Andor, and even the PT. But there are beautiful things in there in those pieces too.

In my mind there is only one way to go with a potential Rogue Squadron project.

You hire Mike Stackpole, who wrote the lion's share of the 'good' SW books aside from Tim Zahn, as well as the Rogue Squadron comic arc, get someone like Bryce Dallas Howard to direct, and you re-canonize one of the few exemplary elements of the original EU. The couple of years after Endor and before the Mandalorian is ripe territory, especially now that the shows have established that the Imperial Remnant is a thing. If you wanted to change it up a bit, you could replace Isard with Moff Gideon, making use of some major talent already introduced into the 'verse- you just have to make sure he survives the movie. Actually, RS would be even better as a live action series than a movie, but if you want to make a RS movie, there you go. If you don't want the Jedi elements, you just don't include them- Corran was obviously Force sensitive early on, but his Jedi heritage didn't come into real play until later in the series.
