Spoilers Season 3 wild speculation

I keep thinking that maybe Vadic is Tasha's daughter with the Romulan, maybe she didn't even die, we only have Sela's word on that.

They've said that it has to do with a mistake in Picard's past (sending Tasha back in time?), and maybe the statue of Captain Garret was a foreshadowing.

Perhaps we could see Tasha or Sela turn up at some point as well.

This is what my thoughts went to immediately. Something like this:

Events of Yesterday's Enterprise sends crew of Enterprise-C to the past/back to their original point in the timeline. After the battle, the crew of the Enterprise C are taken to Romulus, tortured or killed etc? We know the genesis of Sela, what happened to the rest of the crew that survived the battle of Narandra III?

The survivors might have been locked away for decades. Tortured or experimented on. They may have come to hate Picard/The Federation for their suffering. Despite the altruism of their actions (Klingon war avoided). Over time, they banded together and escaped Romulan captivity (or possibly ascendants, given how many years passed).

Now these people have a huge axe to grind against Picard for placing them in their predicament, and the logs of the Enterprise D, a matter of public record, have become like a road map for all who want revenge against Picard. We know that history recorded the battle of Narandra III as a noble sacrifice, but we don't have the other side of the story. Through the logs, Vadic and company they start making a master list of all the top baddies Picard/The Federation at the time faced. Moriarty, Lore, The Dominion.

Vadic talks a lot about patience with her attacks. Maybe this is generational. Kind of reminds me of a Khan type cult with an objective. Stick around for decades until all the pieces are in place and let loose. Keep an inner circle of shapeshifters to insulate against threats. There's no chance Picard and crew can handle all these baddies at once (evil cackle)

This means Tasha or even Sela doesn't really need to appear onscreen - but still have a huge impact/connection on the crew as they try and figure out that their actions - in another timeline - have created this major villain that rises from the sum total of their adventures (the Captain's Logs are the key!)

Scooby-Doo 2 Monsters Unleashed meets the TOS films with the TNG cast.

Predictions:
Lore rescues the Titan A in episode 4. Leads them into...
Moriarty trap starts in episode 5. (Trippy ten forward on the ENT-D?)
Moriarty trap escape in episode 6. (Assuming they have access to a holodeck in this nebula)
Tasha Yar connection to Vadic in episode 7? Reveal flashback how she got command of the Shrike
Episodes 8-10 deal with Poppa Picard learning things about fatherhood maybe and then a big pew pew battle with every Enterpise ever. Picard dies for real, because he just learned about fatherhood and what better time for Patrick Stewart to exit the role?
"Nothing but blue skies..."
[/wild rant]

PS I am enjoying the suggestions about shapeshifters, but the core of the story now seems to center on Picard and Riker's points of view on fatherhood and I don't see how that lands if Riker is a shapeshifter. At some point, when one of the TNG cast is duplicated, I think we the audience will be in on it from the start.

...the story they are telling with Will Riker not getting over his son’s death...

Unless the showrunners have stated otherwise, then tbh the idea that this is Riker's character arc is supposition. And, the status of "current Riker" is irrelevant since it was the recollections made by actual Riker in a flashback scene some 18+ years ago that were set up to mirror how Picard feels seeing his son in sickbay now.

Hell, for all any of us know, Riker being an imposter could be the very reason the writers decided they needed the flashback for Riker's own experiences to add emotional context to Picard's turbolift scene... They couldn't give that kind dialogue to what would eventually turn out to be an imposter.

Speaking of the flashback: Yet another craptastic flashback uniform that looks like it was generated by drunk AI?? Yeesh.

Don't know if this has been posted or not. It could be a major spoiler or just pure fan speculation but just to be safe...

Vadic is an acronym for Vulcan, Andorian, Dominion, Illyrian and Cardassian. Vadic was genetically engineered by the rogue changelings with Vulcan, Andorian, Dominion, Illyrian and Cardassian DNA to make the perfect enemy against the Federation. If true, it might explain Vadic's behavior in ep 2. It could be a form of madness from the genetic engineering of so many different species. It also fits with Terry saying that we will sympathize with Vadic when we learn more about her. Maybe originally "Vadic" was living a quiet and peaceful life and the rogue changelings took her against her will and genetically engineered her to make her into a weapon. That would certainly make her sympathetic to the audience. It also seems to fit with the theory that the rogue changelings stole Lore and Moriarty as part of their plan of revenge against the Federation. So maybe they stole Lore, Moriarty and genetically engineered Vadic from some Alpha quadrant species as a trio of enemies to take down the Federation.

You are inventing a more complex show than the paint by numbers stuff we are actually getting.

Sounds like more fan fiction to be honest.

I am trying, very hard, to be optimistic and keep an open mind about this season, especially having endured the utter dreck that frequently littered the previous two.

So I'm sure you'll forgive me if I don't subscribe to your interpretation just yet -- otherwise I may as well just stop watching the show already. ;)

They are doing Riker in a “dark place” at least, which doesn’t really point to him being an imposter. And unless Terry is outright lying, he’s not a shapeshifter.

Wouldn't be the first time a producer/director etc has lied online about a plot point or the identity of a character lol

And real Riker being locked in a cell on Vadic's ship could easily be considered a "dark place" :D

According to this interview with Matalas, it sounds like the majority of Riker and Troi's arc this season is about the son's death, their family, and getting them back together to a good place.

Oh good lord. In that case I stand corrected, and the writing is just going to carry on being as uninspired as I'd hoped it wouldn't. Cue more TWOK anachronisms, inane memberberries, paint by numbers plot lines and me dropping this season into the proverbial mental recycle bin along with the previous godawful two...

Maybe actually wait until it airs before judging.

Do you think the Federation wouldn't have made overtures to get any survivors back once Picard learned Sela's backstory?

Isn't Sela the daughter of Tasha and the Romulan? Did she mention having a sister?

Nope absolutely not. Kill this speculative idea with fire.
