I like the experience of a humongous screen and proper surround sound. To me, certain movies must be consumed in that fashion at least once. With a number of movies, I've regretted waiting for home releases to give them my first viewing, and then wishing I had seen them in the cinema.

But how is that viewing when you add people around you who won't shut up?

That may depend on the film though, or time of day.

I saw a nearly full 11 am 3D IMAX of TWOW. Then I saw a 4pm 3D IMAX of Antman 3 with maybe 25-30.

I would go to a theater at maybe a higher price if the movie started at the time it said it was going to start. I hate going and then sitting through 20 minutes of ads and trailers and then the movie finally starts, especially for longer movies. If the movie starts at 5, then if I'm in my seat at 5 it should be the beginning of the movie.

Empathy to you on this.

I am tempted to revisit one theatre that forgoes such ad revenue completely, within bus-travel range too. And even before the Pandemic kicked off, it wasn't exactly filling every seat to begin with.

I would, of course, insist upon being masked and preferring the staff and other attendees to do the same.

Not sure what the cost is the USA or other countries. But here in Australia, most of the big cinema chains charge at least $25 (it's been a few years since I visited any of them). I go to a newer cinema that charge $18 for movies that are shown in their biggest screens. Last year, I didn't see as many movies as I normally would. A week or two I saw my first movie for about 6 months.

One of the main factors is time it takes me to the cinema. Thankfully now it's only a 20 minute bus trip, instead getting multiple connections depending on where I go to Melbourne for the cinema. Plus my cinema has reclining chairs, so I no issues with going to this cinema. I have a gift card that I'm currently using - so there is no cost at the moment. Still being rather selective with what I see.

I used to really love going out to movies. One of my favorite things. But now we have this really really HUGE tv and it is so much like a movie screen we just wait until movies come out on dvd or whatever and we watch it then. Going to movies is just too pricy now and too complicated.

One issue I have with movie theaters is the movie doesn't start at the time it is supposed to start. It used to be watch the trailers but now it’s watch the ads, the stupid preshow with Maria Menunos, ads, trailers, and then popcorn coming down the screen followed by soda. It feels like you are going to an ad show and then a movie breaks out eventually. I would love to go to a movie and if that movie starts at 5, it better actually start at 5 and not 5:30.

Yeah, I don't like dropping that kind of cash on tickets and snax anymore to have to sit in the gorram theater and watch 30 minutes of commercials beforehand. The cinemas are really doing it to themselves, as much or more as Hollywood's dreck productions.

I also detest the way they've all gone to selected seating versus just walking into the damn auditorium and grabbing a seat you like- and being able to move if some noisy-ass jackhole is sitting nearby.

And get off my lawn! :ouch:

Well, they said they were closing down the Regal near us, but we just saw a movie there today and there were about 12 movies playing there. I hope it manages to stay open. They don't show matinees anymore, and only have a few times listed now. I guess they are adjusting.

Maybe there will a resurgence in Drive In Theaters.

There's a drive-in close to me that we went to several times but they keep opening and closing and having random hours and now they're open two nights a week but the first of a double feature starts at 7:30 and I'm too old and the kids are too young.

You know, for me, it's more a matter of what is playing driving whether I'll venture to the cinema or not. Top Gun: Maverick and Avitar: Way of Water are the only 2 movies that I HAD to see in the theater. Since I have a really nice 65" 4K TV and Bose surround system, it has to be something exceptional to drag me out of the house these days. If they want to save the movie going experience, provide more content that are MUST SEEs on the (really) big screen.

The only time i go to the movies anymore is if i just can't wait the few months until it hits streaming or it is a big spectacle movie that one should see at least once on a huge screen with a powerful soundsystem.

The last one i was glad to have seen in the theater was Dune, i actually went woah a few times when the soundtrack ramped up and elevated a scene. I've seen the movie many times at home now and it is still fantastic but i doubt i'd have gotten the same woah experience if i had just seen it at home.

I can afford it but the prices have just gotten ridiculous, especially snack and drinks. 4,50 € for a half litre of drink ( and i had water), i'm sorry but even restaurants are cheaper.

When I was young I remember my aunt fussing that it cost $2 to see The Sound of Music at the Avon Theater. The theaters then also were fancy: maroon velvet ropes with brass fittings on each end, maroon deep pile carpeting and ushers to show you to your seat (and in my case to shove feet off the arms of the seat in front of you). Like everything else today, you pay more and get less.
