I haven't been at all impressed with the writing so far this season, save for anything they give to Riker. The stuff with Shaw was pretty good, but they can't decide whether he's angry at Seven or relying on her. Why isn't she in the brig? Honestly, I'm increasingly expecting this to be super underwhelming.
We all know secretly, that Shaw has the "HOTS" for Seven.
Most men who are around Seven have a tendency to fall for her.
He just can't reveal it blatently for obvious reasons.

I'm glad someone else noticed the similarities between Vadic and the Joker. Hopefully she's a little bit deeper of a character than that. With the reveal of Jack's parentage, I really think they're gonna have to work hard to justify Beverly hiding him for so long from Picard. Whatever her motivations, that was a shitty thing to do. And given we know this is the final season, why do I worry they're gonna copy the latest Bond movie in how the story ends for Jean Luc.

She has a history of questionable behavior, so it's not a surprise.

Enjoyed this episode. I think Beverly figured out how to genetically enhance people to have British accents without exposure to them, and that's why she stayed in hiding. :D

One could argue that Hollywood would rather not give 9/11-sized death tolls in most recent popular fiction because, well, 9/11, but even ENT killed 7 million people in the Xindi attack so Trek knows when to go big.

How many died at Utopia Planitia in season 1?

I feel like people have been understating Matalas' involvement in season 2. I mean I wasn't there but based on what I've read and his own statements the Q and time travel plots were all his idea. Picard's prior trauma was Akiva's. Matalas was brought on board as co showrunner in early 2020 and they started filming in early 2021. He had to have a big part in shaping the season.
Season 2 went through multiple multiple permutations, and is probably a compromise of a compromise of a compromise of a compromise. If you just read a broad outline of the season, it would seem like a bit of a greatest hits throwback but perfectly serviceable. Instead it falls apart in the execution. I get the feeling much more especially was planned for the later half of the season, but it was all diverted because of studio interference, budget, and Covid. Matalas even said that seeing how that portion of the season play out was like a fan watching from afar. Matalas brought in James Callis and Jay Karnes, but their parts got simplified to the point of mostly sitting in rooms. I'd be really interested in finally hearing more about what the original plans were.

I noticed he was the one who eyed Riker when they came on board but was it also the same person from the bar?
Ahhh. Now I'm doubting myself. Maybe someone said that on YouTube and I didn't make the connection myself. Well I'll look when I watch 301 for the ~fourth~ time. And to think I couldn't even watch season 2 episodes back to back without a break of a day or two when I was binging the season.

He reminds me of Pai Mei from Kill Bill.
Robert Meyer Burnett has been using that analogy since July...

I enjoyed the episode in a vacuum; JLP seems like actually JLP in most of it. Riker too.

The things I'm most nervous about are Vadic and her origins...lots of potential for stupidity...as well as why Bev kept her son a secret from JLP and cut everyone off. It's hard to see Bev from TNG doing that.
