It hasn’t come up directly, but if it’s the 250th Anniversary of the Federation’s Starfleet, it’s 2411. Social media is saying as much, anyway. If “Jack” is the approximate age of his actor, with no other 24th century sci-fi or con artistry yet to be revealed, he would have been born in the 4 year gap between “Insurrection” (2375) and “Nemesis” (2379) possibly when Picard (72) and Crusher (53) were frisky from the regenerating radiation on Ba’ku.

I believe Matalas has confirmed it's the 250th anniversary of the maiden flight of the NX-01, not the Federation.

Why would having a son with JLP damage Beverly's character?

Having a child without letting the father know, someone she cares about deeply, is a shitty thing to do.

Maybe Beverly & JLP hooked up during the events of "The Naked Now"
That was S1 Ep 3.
Beverly was gone for S2, and back for S3.
ST:TNG S2 took place in 2365
ST:PIC S3 takes place in 2401
That's a 36 year time gap.
Assuming Beverly gave birth near the early part of S2 or later part of S2.
The age of Jack Crusher could be 35/36 y/o.
That should match with 34 y/o Ed Speleers who portrays Jack Crusher.

Besides the fact that Crusher having a secret baby and then specifically leaving him for others to raise would be a very strange, especially as Enterprise has families aboard, it also means most of Season 1 took place before she started showing her pregnancy. It stretches credulity (and the Season 1 uniforms were especially tight).

Everyone saw the son revelation coming from a mile (or light year) away. The interesting questions are going to be when he was conceived, why Beverly never told Picard, why Picard never bothered to ask or try to find Beverly, why the son speaks with a British accent when Beverly doesn’t, why the villain knows or cares about him, and whether he will be an interesting character in his own right.

Jack, or whatever his name is, appears older than 20 or 21. He is not a boy or a kid, even if the dialogue suggests he is. He’s also old enough to have amassed a criminal record, years of experience and a reputation. The actor is in his mid thirties but can probably pull off mid to late twenties. Early thirties is more believable. I hope they have an explanation. Beverly would have been in her fifties if he was born 21 years ago. I suppose the explanation for an oops baby under those circumstances could be that both she and Picard were rejuvenated by their time among the Ba’ku and it took a few years for the effects to dissipate,

I still like Shaw. Yeah, why should he risk the lives of his 500 crew members for a renegade admiral and captain who stole a shuttle and the admiral’s long lost criminal son? His ship is an exploratory vessel, he’s outgunned and it isn’t his fight. The outcome is still obvious, but I can see his point.

Raffi the drug addict will get old real fast but I’m glad to see Worf again.

Yeah, I’m interested in the villain, but less evil cackling and more about her motivation, please.

So Jean Luc Picard, one of the few (very few) noble and admirable characters on tv is now the kind of guy who sleeps with a subordinate officer. The widow of his best friend no less.
And Beverly is someone who would conceal a child from his father?

You know Gene Roddenberry was excoriated for trying to curate the characters he helped create. He wasn’t wrong.

Amazing ....three seasons of Picard and I haven’t been able to stomach more than two episodes of any of them.

Over and out!

Is it me or if Todd stashwick actually played the villain in the demeanor he plays Shaw it would have made a more compelling character/bad guy than Vadic?

Vadic is one dimensional as anything. Every villain in trek has a conflict of good/evil, she just looks like and sounds like a panto villain.

There hasn't been a compelling Villain in any of the nu trek shows/movies at all. Even Shinzon and Ruafo were light years ahead of what we have now

I don’t see anything wrong with what you just said. They’re human. Humans do illogical things.

And there was implied romance between them in TNG. Also not the first subordinate officer Picard fancied.

Yeah but she might have her reasons.

I believe Bev had the child after the TNG movies, not during TNG S1. Yeah, maybe it does not match the actor's age but we should just go with it.

Well. Beverly did wear that loose blue lab coat over her uniform most of the time

People live longer and age slower in the 24/25 century

I thought this was not as good as the first episode, however it pushed the story along and I was glad they brought in Worf, woke up Crusher, and seemingly answered the mystery of Jack's parentage. Though Picard might have been lying or in denial about it, I would like to believe that when he saw Crusher and they had that silent connection that that's when he knew. Though I have a feeling Jack is Picard's son, and it's not a misdirect, but it would be neat if there was a swerve here (and Jack is the son of Riker or Barclay or someone else to do some of that old subverting expectations).

I liked Shaw more in this episode. I liked that he wasn't willing to fight at first. It went against the grain of the Trek captains we've seen over the years, both good and bad, and it also felt logical, but at the same time, perhaps driven by his personal animus for Picard and Riker. It was a good stew of motivations with Shaw. Though I am questioning why Shaw, with his personal baggage which even Vadic knows something about, was given command of the Titan.
I thought this episode was playing fast and loose with rank here. After Shaw relieved Seven of duty, why was she still out commanding a security team? Also, how can a retired admiral belay Shaw's orders?

I also liked the Raffi storyline. I was surprised that her ex-husband was in the episode (they could've given him a better outfit though than a tattered acid-washed jeans look from the 80s or 90s), though it did make me question if Jae (and I suppose Raffi as well) had underworld ties while she was in Starfleet? I was assuming Raffi's drug use started after she was kicked out of Starfleet over Picard, but I wonder if it was something she's struggled with even longer. If they had to have Raffi fall off the wagon I am glad they did it this way than having her already back to using before the season started, and like over relationship troubles with Seven. I liked the Ferengi Sneed. His makeup looked more up-to-date befitting the 21st century makeup compared to the 80s/90s, but not so overdone as the DISCO style. I also liked Worf's reintroduction.

I liked the few lines that Ensign La Forge got here, and it was a nice mention of her dad too.

The weaker parts of the episode were Jack and Vadic. Jack seems to be a cross between Han Solo (more Ehrenreich than Ford) and TNG's Jason Vigo. Not quite buying that he caused all that trouble. He doesn't seem rakish enough. And Vadic is just too hammy. She's more Nero than Khan 2.0, absent that one harrowing scream of rage Nero gave when he impaled Robau. I did like how Vadic lowered her shields so that Titan could see all that her ship was packing. That was a nice, intimidation move. I also liked that she doesn't seem fixated on Picard, which I was assuming she would be another person out to get him personally. Vadic's starship looks pretty cool, though it also reminds me of how they overdid it with the Scimitar, Narada, and Vengeance to make sure they looked super, uber badass.

Forgot to mention it last week, but I think it applies this week as well. Why does this series keep shelving Laris? She's former Tal Shiar. She would come in handy a lot right now with either the Raffi or Picard/Riker storylines, though her presence would doubtlessly set Shaw off even more.
"Picard was able to keep his command after the borg incident"
