Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

Problem is they wouldn't have a beef with Picard or the TNG crew. I think it's look most likely to be the "Conspiracy" aliens. I got a theory I don't like but I think RIker might have one of them inside of him. Maybe even Shaw.
One of the hyped elements of this season by the showrunners is that we're going to see conflict in the crew, including between Picard and Riker. That would be false if Riker was brainwashed by an alien. The conlfict wouldn't be between Riker and Picard, it'd be between the alien and Picard.

Furthermore the aliens in Conspiracy were only invented because Gene Roddenberry did not like the idea of evil Starfleet conspiracies and insisted they were brainwashed by aliens to get the story aired. The showrunners said they wanted to have more drama this season and push the boundaries of Gene's 'no conflict in Starfleet' ideas. It'd be very ironic if they went back to the alien parasite plot device designed to appease the no conflict in Starfleet idea in the first place.

Due to all of the above, I find it very unlikely the Conspiracy aliens are controlling Riker and Shaw.

I love this idea! It would call back to season 1 of TNG and bring the whole series in a full circle. We are tired of the Borg and these puppet master alien bugs are campy enough to call back to TOS while keeping the stakes high. Maybe the "Red Lady" is the mother creature and whoever stole the experimental weapons from daystrom has already caught on and fighting there own war against the Federation.

The Red Lady was the statue of Rachel Garrett.

Matalas has already said it's not the conspiracy bugs. What we do know about the the villains is that their motivations are tied to fallout from the dominion war

I think it's a horrible idea.

The best option is to base the antagonist on a previous mistake the Federation made - preferably something Picard himself is partially responsible for. Something like the Maquis or the Changeling virus.

Agree - or maybe a world that was attacked or held by the Dominion during the war

The Shrike reminds me of this ...

Perhaps the "GAMBIT' episodes have something to do with the current plot?

That involved an overpowered weapon of destruction as well.
(Stone of GOL)

Could Vadic be one of the Mercenarie's daughter?

Picard did trick Baran into killing himself.

I think the aliens though would play back seat. In away they are kind of like the Founders on DS9 in that since they can be inside anyone it can create conflict through paranoia. I could see this as a means of drawling out feelings that some might otherwise just keep to themselves. Also if the TNG family can't trust each other that creates a situation in which they rediscover that trust and love, that might have been watered down over the years as they all went their own way an lived lives apart from each other.

If it's not the bugs it could be The Maquis. I heard rumors that Ro and Thomas RIker and even Eddington would be on the show so I guess that would work.

Picard had diddly squat to do with the Changeling virus.

True, but the Federation attempted a genocide. Revisiting this would at least allow further reflection on the Federation as a whole. Though it's preferable to both reflect back on bad decisions by the Federation and Picard's actions - which is why "revenge of the Maquis" is the best by far, even though Picard's own role in that (onscreen) was relatively minor (he attempted to fuck them over in Preemptive Strike, but Ro stopped the plan before it got anywhere).

Eddington died. I know this is Star Trek but let's just write that one off right now. Eddington doesn't even have a beef nor established connection to Picard in the franchise narrative.

Thomas Riker and Ro I can buy in a heartbeat. But yeah, we're not seeing Michael Eddington return after nearly three decades in the grave.

OK, dig this.

William T. Riker is gonna die. He is having trouble with Troi. She is pissed he turned tail and ran at the first opportunity to get away & calls him on it.

Thomas & Ro are back in some fashion and he and Troi strike sparks, again. William T. realizes that Troi is better off with Thomas, as he would prioritize family more, while William T. still has the itch. Furthermore, he realizes that HE is happier scratching that itch than at home, though he loves Troi & Kestra deeply.

As the season roles on, it becomes apparent that the danger of the baddies is extensive, and Troi & Kestra are in danger. William T. saves the day, Troi & Kestra, the Federation, and the remaining TNG Crew in a jazz-infused blaze of glorious glory, at the cost of his own life.

Everyone has a sad, at first. Then Geordi & Ro remember that Riker liked the Festive Funeral that got held for them when everyone thought they were dead in TNG. They decide to do something similar for William T. More jazz. More New Orleans cajun style. Troi ends up with Thomas. Roll credits.

Or maybe Thomas only comes in at the funeral.

We didn't actually see him die. The theory I heard would be that someone beamed him out. I could see it being Ro. She went around rescuing Maquis people. First Thomas Riker from prison and then Eddington.
