Here's my thing though... Shaw's a fictional character completely controlled by the writing staff. Presumably they want us to hate him, because they're making it so obvious that they might as well show us that he spends his off-time in the holodeck dressed up as a Nazi, but I just don't get why. lol

Like if it's because Shaw's like Sisko and he hates Picard, then fine. At least with Brooks and how Sisko was written at that point, I totally get why he disrespects Picard the one time they meet each other. But the characterization of Shaw and his actual actions in this episode are just confusing to me.

He's either smart because he suspects them for having ulterior motives, or he's an idiot who somehow failed upwards into command or a C-tier ship that even Mariner wouldn't want to serve on... or is he both?

It doesn't have to be either-or. He might be a generally competent captain who's got a blind spot/trauma response he's never bothered to work through and is making it everyone else's problem.

I really want season 3 to be both good and successful. Its greatest challenge will be getting people that bailed over the course of NuTrek to come back and give this a chance. RLM has almost 1.5 million subs on YouTube. Their past Star Trek videos can gain over a million views. So getting them to even watch an episode after saying they were done is a big big deal for viral marketing.

I was actually on the edge of my seat watching their review. They didn't... dislike... the episode, and will be open to reviewing more episodes. I can see why they're so skeptical... season 2 did start well and fell off a cliff. They just don't seem to appreciate all the behind the scenes changes that have happened. And I really wish they'd gotten screener access. But, their foot is in the door, and their interest has been sparked... so I'd call it a win.

Meanwhile the Critical Drinker (1.6 million subs) has already seen the first six episodes and has given it a positive review.

Paramount is apparently looking for the season to have a presence on social media, so having the two largest YouTube channels that have (critically) covered Star Trek in the past be happy with it is a major accomplishment.

The Critical Drinker being positive says a lot more than Mike and Rich Evans liking it....

Now I want to see Mike and Rich Evans do TMP. (Mike's previous re:View of TMP made me appreciate it more.)

Human beings really shouldn't be put in charge of starships. :p
I mean if the spoilers some have posted are true, Shaw is kinda of what Sisko might have become if hadn't worked through the trauma of Jennifer's death while communicating with the Prophets. Just a bitter, grumpy, pissy man who keeps to himself most of the time.
I don't know about the spoilers, but I could buy that. But if I hated someone and met them for the first time, my first instinct wouldn't be to go to sleep. Maybe that's just me. lol

What's your issue? I mean he goes to bed at some point but Shaw left the room not because he was tired but because he very obviously couldn't stand being in the presence of both Picard and Riker. It's perfectly normal behaviour to not want to spend time with people you dislike.

44 pages... I'm impressed.

Anyway, I enjoyed the heck out of the premiere. As others have wrote, the Riker/Picard dynamic was beautiful to watch, the humor was relaxed and organic, and Laris' scene was perfect.

I was concerned when we first see Raffi but pleased she's actually undercover and pleased they showed her struggle a moment before ditching the drugs. Yeah, the warrior line was a dead giveaway that her handler is Worf, but how did Worf end up in Intelligence is the bigger question for me.

Seven's conflict was well acted by Ryan. I haven't seen much VOY, but given what I know about her, this seems like a realistic struggle. Especially when your superior officer doesn't seem to like you much!

I loved 12 Monkeys, so I knew Stashwick would be good here, but the sheer hatred shown for him here shows he's doing his job well! As @Tallguy pointed out, Shaw is a bit of a characiture now, but I expect that we'll find out more about why he acted like this later. Watching Frakes try to fit on that bunk bed was funny though.

The whole building being portaled like that definitely got a "holy shit" of shock from me. Poor Raffi! You know she's going to blame herself.

FWIW, I like the look of the Titan-A. I also got a kick out of referring to the D as "the fat one" because I remember not liking it much back in 1987.

Why did Bev send to Picard's old comm badge? I think it seemed more secure to her than to his home. Given we saw Picard and Riker being watched, it might've beena good bet.

Now for the question noone seems to have raised... WHY have The Bad Guys been chasing Beverly and her son all over hell and half of space? Something they saw or heard on their travels? Something about her son? This is the mystery I found most intriguing.

I could tell I enjoyed it because I was suprised and disappointed it was over. I'm excited to see more!

Thanks to whoever posted the screencaps. I think every single image in the end credits (and probably a lot of other seemingly insignificant stuff) is a clue to what's going on.

ETA: the end credits show DNA sequences at several points. Also, what's up with "Do not seek blame."

The most commonly used launch date for the Ent-D I see online is 2363. The Neutral Zone being in 2364 could work if apply Lower Deck's stardate system, where 1000 stardates does not equal exactly one year.

I thought it was that 1 season =/= 1 calendar year was the point of that.

Some interesting discussion here about Seven of Nine's name. I've always disdained that name, and do see it as an imposed designation. However, I do understand that is Seven's preferred identifier, so if I knew her in real life, I would respect her choice. I'd say, as opposed to a trans dead name allegory, she is shown to not consider it dead per se, or at least she didn't. I got the impression that she let B'Jayzl (or whatever her name was) call her "Annika" so her birth name was more an intimate name than a dead name. It may have "died" when she found out the one person she let in to her heart in that way ended up murdering her beloved child.

Shaw being an asshole has been, as this thread has gone on, less a "fact" than I originally had taken it to be. Picard and Riker were being obvious and arrogant. With Seven's name, we only actually have Seven's statement as to Shaw's preference. I can see how Seven, not one to explain her feelings, and hoping to make a go of Starfleet, and with the way Shaw might have carried himself, could have thought that his preference was more resolute than it was. Maybe instead of saying, "I insist I be called Seven or Seven of Nine," she just did that choking down anger thing she does, which would not be a great first impression. Shaw might have understood if she said something. Or at least acceded to her wishes as an individual with the right to be called what she wants to. We just don't know. I'm willing to give the character the benefit of the doubt (for now).

My issue is if he presumably dislikes Seven on a personal level and doesn't trust her on a professional level, having to remind her to remember where her loyalties lie... and he's supposed to be a hardass captain that's all about the numbers and doing things by the book, the writers could have found a way to have him unable to interfere that wasn't him literally taking his eyes off the ball.

Honestly, I'd have preferred if the meat he ate gave him diarrhea and he was stuck on the space toilet during that whole time. lol

Wait a minute, why is the quote showing as my post? I'm confused.

Re: the prospect of someone seeking to prevent Mr. Chabon from getting residuals, hence the absence of Elnor, Soji and Laris...

ouch! It wouldn’t be the first time this kind of thing happens that that would really suck.

Yes, it really would.
