What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

I think that will become more controversial once Season 3 concludes. If it sticks the landing (cliche, yes of course, all the cliches) then that will be more controversial. If not, well Discovery at least doesn't touch legacy figures and ruin them so it can be better.

Or something.
I think it sticks the landing, but not in the way they'd like. It'll stick the landing in TOS Movie and General '80s Movie style. So, because they'll do it old-school, it won't be looked upon favorably. It'll be called cliched and unoriginal. Just my prediction.

And they're bound to do some things to the TNG Characters they won't like, it's gonna happen, and it's gonna piss some people off. This is like the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy.

So, yeah, DSC's looking pretty good -- or at least not as bad -- by comparison. ;)

I stand by my earlier pronouncement that DSC Season 4 was vastly superior to PIC Season 2. DSC stuck the landing and gave us some truly eerie and cool species and concepts and ended last season in a way that honored Trek's ethos of tolerance and understanding of the strange and baffling.
I think many have not watched Season 4, and just pronounce judgement based upon the previous seasons.

I could be totally wrong but if PIC Season 3 really is an '80s Movie, nothing's more predictable than an '80s Movie. I was a kid in the '80s. They targeted this to me. They hit all the right buttons. And I know they did. I'm allowing myself to be swept up by it, and I will call it a favorite, I won't deny my enjoyment or pretend I don't have it... but my intellectual side can still see right through it.

With DSC Season 4, they did some things I honestly couldn't predict and showed real progress within the Star Trek Universe instead of having it all just be a throwback. And that makes a big difference.

And you are assuming, based on a single episode, that the rest of the season of nine more episodes will follow suit.

PICARD has been FAR too uneven to give it that kind of accurate prediction.

Now, if you said the same thing after 3 or 4 episodes aired, your argument would hold water. Right now, it's wishful thinking at best.

Calling it the best season premiere would be a far more accurate description than a best season. (For this series, I will call it the best season premiere. In the franchise, definitely not.)

Well, hey, remember I said I was going to wait six months before I said anything. ;)

I don't know about that. So far, folks have been fawning over PIC S3 for doing precisely the things that the other new shows have been derided for being cliche and unoriginal. Honestly, I find it a little baffling.

Because it comes down to perceived respect. And I say perceived because quite honestly I find the whole "respect" notion around fictional characters a difficult one to parse. Yes, I understand the desire for there to be a measure consistency in the product and characters to be relatively consistent. What I don't get is the idea that respect means everything is followed to an absolute tee. Design language, music, themes, and even dialog much be 100% familiar to the point that I feel like respect translates to "Don't dare change it."

And I have a tough time with that. Cliches apparently are welcome so long as you don't change anything.

Species 10-C and the way Starfleet misinterpreted its intentions were pure Trek.

If they had actually made contact with 10-C earlier, Season 4 might have been my favorite season of that series. It took a little long and meandering to get there, unfortunately.

PIC Season 2 was just an unfocused, disappointing mess. And I'm not exactly quiet when it comes to how DSC has disappointed me over its run.

Just to point this out for a quick moment. In all seriousness, sometimes you don't need much to know something is better.

It's not Star Trek, but it's something everyone knows. I didn't need to sit through two hours of Batman Begins to know it was better than Batman & Robin. I could tell from the first frame.

Sometimes you just know. It's okay to just go with your instincts sometimes.

Every ep of PIC makes me esteem DSC more, and I quit watching in S4: it was just too emo and 2022 ish. But, PIC 2 far surpassed it in suck, and 0301 was just now, uh, rehash of rehash? These ppl have nothing new up their sleeves. (Though I love PRO for some reason)

I don’t follow pre stuff enough to know about PIC 03 supposed to be an 80s movie. What does that even mean (I was a teen in the 80s, btw) — what are defining marks of an 80s movie?

TOS Movie. Those were mostly made in the '80s. Assholes in charge who are barriers, evil baddies we're supposed to love to hate, rule-breakers we're supposed to root for, the rule of cool, stuff like that.

People probably thought earlier I was going to say I liked PIC better than DSC now. But nope. A leopard never changes their spots. ;)
