What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

When Beverly returned in season 3, after running a hospital for a year, she was an Admiral, but went on pretending that she was a Commander so no one treated her funny, or tried to make her run the ship.

McCoy stayed on the Hood, which means that he was in TNG Tin Man and TNG Redemption I and II.

I think I've got a doozy of a Controversial Opinion. But I'll hold off on stating what it is for six months, because that's what the Spoiler Rules are.

But I'll clue you in. You know how my favorite Star Trek series is a toss-up between TOS and DSC with PIC bubbling underneath? Well, if the TOS Movies were a TV series, they'd be my favorite Star Trek series. And I'll leave it at that for now. You can connect the dots to see where I might be going with this.

Don’t mince words, Bones. What do you really think?

Okay. I won't mince words.
The Picard Forum?
Nope. I'm not going with this where you think I'm going to go.

First off, spoiler-free: I like PIC Season 3 better than PIC Season 1. Why be coy? I already said I thought PIC Season 1 had been my favorite season of all Star Trek. So now Picard has two of my favorite Star Trek seasons ever. Which itself is a "Controversial Star Trek Opinion", but not where I'm going. Between S1 and S3 being as high up there with me as I said, and still really liking the first half of S2, you'd think I'd now say PIC is my favorite Star Trek series... but you'd be wrong.

On a series level, I still like Discovery better. DSC is mostly its own thing. When it hasn't been its own thing, it's given you enough information the vast majority of the time so that you could get by if you hadn't seen whatever it was referring back to. When it comes to PIC, you're shit out of luck.

Also, since PIC Season 3 feels like a movie (I'm not spoiling anything by saying that, we all know that's what they're trying to do), that's distinctly different from a TV Series. I think DSC works better as a Serialized TV Series.

So, no, despite my thinking Picard is better on a season-to-season level, I think Discovery is better on a series level.

You can't judge an entire 10 episode season based on only one aired episode when the other 9 haven't even aired yet.

That's just calling something good or bad without any merit.

Seasons 1 and 2 of PICARD started off great (and the season 3 premiere was by far the best one), and look at the mess that happened with those seasons. There's plenty of room for season 3 to go wrong, though I am sincerely hoping it doesn't.

Season 2 of PIC had a first episode that blew me away. By the end of the season I was wondering if the writing team had lost a bet.

Picard always has just enough great things to keep me watching. This season I suspect it will be watching Will and Jean-Luc acting like an old married couple.

Will: "Hey, you're awesome and I love you, but you have no IDEA what I kept to myself when you were my boss!"

I was referring to Lord Garth saying season 3 of PIC is better than the first season.

A season premiere may be better than another season premiere, or even several episodes, but a season premiere is NOT the whole season. Far too premature to call it, either way.

Eh. It hasn't grabbed me at all so it's hard for me to say I think Season 3 is worth it. I get your point, but I'm the kind of person who judges based one episode.

If you recall, I wasn't totally onboard with PIC Season 2 during the first episode. I said "I like DSC better!" I changed my tune with the second episode, then changed it back by mid-season.

Because they designed PIC Season 3 to be like a movie, I know how movies work, I've read books on Screenwriting, I took courses on it in college, I've written screenplays myself, and I've been watching movies all my life. And PIC Season 3 has shown it's owning what it is. So, because of this, I can predict broader strokes more easily here than I could've with other seasons.

I hope you're right. I feel you may be.

But I've been to this rodeo before, even with Berman Era Trek. I'm being cautious.

Interesting that my saying "I still like Discovery better than Picard" isn't getting attention. In fact, these days, I don't think anyone saying that might be considered to have a controversial opinion anymore.

I think the needle has moved.

I think that will become more controversial once Season 3 concludes. If it sticks the landing (cliche, yes of course, all the cliches) then that will be more controversial. If not, well Discovery at least doesn't touch legacy figures and ruin them so it can be better.

Or something.

DIS is still divisive, but PIC S2 was received so overwhelmingly poorly that I think even most DIS distractors wouldn't call it controversial to prefer it over that.

I stand by my earlier pronouncement that DSC Season 4 was vastly superior to PIC Season 2. DSC stuck the landing and gave us some truly eerie and cool species and concepts and ended last season in a way that honored Trek's ethos of tolerance and understanding of the strange and baffling.

PIC Season 2 was just an unfocused, disappointing mess. And I'm not exactly quiet when it comes to how DSC has disappointed me over its run.
