My thoughts are mixed. I really didn't like season 1 or 2, but I thought they both had really strong opening episodes. I'd say this felt like a step down from those two, we'll see if the rest of the season improves or if it nosedives like they did.
The nostalgia bait such as "In the 25th century" does absolutely nothing for me anymore. I just roll my eyes now when I see stuff like that.
The same goes for the music. The Goldsmith themes are so much better than the Russo ones, but it's not Jerry Goldsmith writing new music, it's someone else just recycling his greatest hits.
There's still plenty of stuff I liked, but given the quality of the previous seasons it'll take a lot to win me back over. I hope subsequent episodes can do that like they seem to have for many critics.
