TMP- Which "version" and why?

Which version of TMP is your definitive one?

Who was going to be Decker's first officer I wonder? It probably wasn't Sonak but I feel like that's an easy out. And who was Spock's first officer in TWOK?
It feels like it should have been Sulu. Uhura is a department head but it seems hard to justify keeping a Lt-Commander at the helm with no other duties. In my head canon he was Chief of Operations i.e. in charge of logistics, the cargo bay, and the shuttle bay and was manning the helm as their most experienced pilot.

Sonak was a full commander, so I'd lean towards him being Decker's exec, but after he dies Kirk mentions that Decker would have to do double duty as science officer, which sort of indicates by TMP exec is normally a completely seperate position. Perhaps since Enterprise was launched unexpectedly, no one had yet been assigned.

I'm pretty sure that in TWoK Uhura was Kirk's attaché, and wasn't normally part of Enterprise's crew, so I'd go with Sulu in that instance.

That's what I thought but I wasn't positive. And you can't take that kind of risk of TrekBBS, man.
I don't think he was identified as such in dialog. At that stage of the shows development, he might still be the "First Lieutenant" as described in the various outlines and proposals. But he does wear blue. Then again, so do the security officers. :p

I'm in the middle of watching the 2022 Director's Edition of TMP.

Praises:
1. Thank God it still looks and feels like a '70s movie.

2. I'm watching this on my projector and I stand by what I said a few years ago: If you haven't seen TMP on the Big Screen or some form of big screen, then you haven't seen it.

3. The scene on Vulcan looks a lot better now than it did in the 2001 DE. I don't know if it's a change in the lighting, resolution, or both, but it works now.

4. They have some shots with the Enterprise that I don't remember seeing before when it's travelling inside V'Ger. Those are welcome.

5. I like that they included the part of the scene with the crewwoman telling Kirk about McCoy, "He wanted to see how it scrambled our molecules!" That was a nice scene in the 1983 version that wasn't in the 1979 theatrical cut, and I'm glad it's made it into the 2022 DE.

6. I like the new sound effects. They don't sound out of place and makes it feel like they're actually operating the equipment, unlike before where in a lot of instances you'd hear nothing.

7. The color-grading of the film, especially in this edition, is top-notch.

Critiques:
1. When Kirk and McCoy are talking about Decker, and around when Kirk says, "Make your point, Doctor", there's some wonky, blurry stuff going on in one of those shots. That should NOT have been allowed into this cut of the film. They should've just bit the bullet and went with however that shot was before. I didn't notice a problem before, but I sure noticed it now. A minor thing, but still worth pointing out since this is the last version of TMP that will probably ever be released. (Never say never, but realistically...)

2. I miss the male computer voice from Engineering.

That's all I have up to this point. The Ilia-droid's about to board the Enterprise. So far, I'd have to say the 2022 DE is my favorite version. The two critiques I have are pretty small in the grand scheme of things. I think this is the best overall presentation of TMP.

Thoe only sutff from the SLV that I'd want added to the DE is the longer McCoy/Kirk discussion, the "in our image" line and the McCoy/Uhura "tens of thousands" exchange. Boggles my mind that they, as a group or Wise didn't think those 3 short bits improved the movie. They are all solid character lines that take about 45 seconds total in additional run-time.

I completely agree. These are precisely the things I miss in the DE. One narrative change I liked about the DE was "82 AUs" changing to "2 AUs", which makes a lot more sense.

I just finished watching the rest of the movie. Not really much to add that I didn't already say before. This is my first look at V'Ger V'Ger since 2001, which was the last time I watched the Director's Edition. I like that we don't see it until toward the end, which keeps V'Ger mysterious for the vast majority of the runtime.

Not in the 1979 theatrical cut but in the 1983 extended cut and also in the DE is the scene with Spock saying he weeps for V'Ger as he would a brother. I always found that to be a little awkward. I wouldn't weep for my brother if he was searching for meaning in life, not that he ever has to my knowledge, I'd just help him however I could if possible. I'm guessing they had that scene for two reasons: Vulcans repress their emotions so they feel them more acutely when they surface, and it's to reinforce that Spock and V'Ger have a common link in that they were searching for purpose. I can see what they were going for, but it still always seemed awkward. But that's why he's an alien.

The Enterprise "docking" at V'Ger looks sooooo much better now. That shot of the Enterprise docked there always looked fake in the 1979 version. I don't know if what they used before was a matte painting in the background or a poorly-built facsimile, but the Enterprise in the 2022 DE docked at V'Ger is a massive improvement. And we get to see the Enterprise from more new angles!

Overall Thoughts: This is a great movie! This film represents Star Trek's best use of model work and practical effects that we'll ever see. Those carefully constructed models inside of V'Ger, the handcrafted opticals, real lighting, the massive scale, it doesn't get better than this. And not just for V'Ger. The Enterprise, Dry Dock, and the other locations as well.

So, yeah. I'm glad I watched this. And I can say, at the end, yes: the 2022 DE is my favorite version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Ok my rotoscoping might be a bit dodgy but this is an attempt to do something with part 1 of the Memory Wall. If any footage of the attach ever surfaces, I would tag that on the end of this one. I have the dialogue ready!
