If you love the Enterprise…

If I’m not mistaken I was pretty sure AMT paid Matt Jefferies to design the Klingon battle cruiser which he did on his own time and then they built two miniatures of it themselves so they could expand their line of Star Trek kits. It was a similar situation to when they built the shuttlecraft for the rights to it and to get the rights for a model kit of the Enterprise. If I’m correct then Paramount did not actually pay for the Klingon ship—they received it in exchange for AMT’s licensing to market the model kit.

The miniature was filmed as a Klingon ship first in “Elaan Of Troyius” then as a Romulan ship in “The Enterprise Incident,” but the episodes were aired in reverse order. Than later it was used for “Day Of The Dove.” As stated upthread the Klingon miniature was utilized as a stand-in for the Romulans because the original BoP was nowhere to be found. It has long been believed Wah Chang destroyed the BoP miniature himself because he was informed Star Trek would not (or should not) employ his services because he was not a union member.

The Klingon miniature in "The Enterprise Incident" standing in for the Romulans still had the Klingon emblem. The Romulans apparently didn't have time to repaint their brand new ships :)
Since this was the first appearance of this ship design, then one would assume the emblem was Romulan of some sort.:rommie: The emblem on that one ship is similar to the Romulan emblem above the Romulan Commander's door (https://tos.trekcore.com/hd/albums/3x02hd/theenterpriseincidenthd0723.jpg), but not exact. In its only other two appearances in TOS as Klingon ships (Day of the Dove and Elaan of Troyius), do we ever get a good enough view to see the same emblem either on those ships?<Of course, the Klingon emblem was originally designed for the Klingons by Matt Jefferies for Elaan of Troyius and prominently seen behind the Klingon Commander (https://tos.trekcore.com/hd/albums/3x13hd/elaanoftroyiushd1168.jpg), but due to production reasons, the Klingon stuff was first seen on screen as Romulan.> In universe, one explanation is that in season three, both the Romulan Empire and Klingon Empire used the same emblem to denote their new joint alliance. :)

That sounds pretty reasonable to have a shared emblem for the alliance. It is pretty funny with the tri-color pattern how both the Klingons and Romulans were using it. And when the alliance soured the Klingons rotated the emblem 90 degrees counter-clockwise and altered the colors to show it's just them while the Romulans went to a different emblem :D

sounds pretty reasonable
Suuuure it does.

It's funny that the TOS team thought that the insignia on the ships would have been clear enough to necessitate an "almost if you squint" copy to put on the sets in Enterprise Incident.

Does anyone know if the KindaKlingon emblem appeared in TAS? EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read up far enough.

I know it made it as far as the Star Trek Maps. (Honestly the first time I remember seeing it and also the first time I said "Are you SERIOUS?" about the similarity.)

That 'joint" emblem probably represents just the Romulan Star Empire since Marc Alaimo is wearing it on his TNG Era uniform in "The Neutral Zone" and by that point in Romulan history any pretense at getting along with the Klingon Empire had long since ended.

Wait, so they couldn't be bothered with having the Romulans continue to look like standard issue Vulcans but they kept that preposterous compromise of an emblem?!?

In TOS they reasoned few would likely pick up on it on the smallish CRT screens. In TAS they actually made an effort to distinguish the two.

It’s a pity in TOS they couldn’t have had an extra Klingon ship painted up or decaled with Romulan markings. It’s an even greater pity they no longer had the original BoP miniature from “Balance of Terror”or couldn’t have another one made. Mind you having the Romulans using Klingon design was a neat bit of added worldbuilding.

Are you talking about that 3 dot pattern on his uniform? Or somewhere else?
