John Williams appreciation

John Williams, the maestro of so many childhoods, turns 91 today. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman, Harry Potter, ET, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters and so, so many more.

Let's celebrate by posting some of our favorite John Williams themes. If I had to choose one single favorite, this is the one I find myself humming the most...

Williams's "Superman" is my favorite by default, but he first came on my personal radar as a film composer with Jaws, several years prior to Star Wars, Close Encounters, Superman, Raiders, et al.

The theme is so seemingly simple, yet so ominous and unforgettable:

It's also neat the way the music, along with the film, morphs in its latter half from horror to sea adventure:

John Williams has so many good scores. Many of which I listen to just relaxing or driving down the road. His scores elevate any movie he writes them for.

I get goosebumps every time the main theme kicks in at 1:20 and again when the Brachiosaur comes in at 5:06

On the flip side, I also love the score for The Lost World, especially the way instead of wonder, like in the first movie, the music is ominous and foreboding (but still with an adventurous feel)

Almost every one of John Williams' score were iconic; including Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade were great scores which are so memorable I can hum them.

Creepy feel to it and then shifts to an adventure tone.

Adventure at first then horror themes; this is such a nice departure to what I've heard from Raiders. It was done brilliantly.

Has all the tones from Raiders but later delivers a family theme which compliments the film. All were memorable.

Where does one even begin to pick a favourite John Williams piece? The totality of his compositions are an embarrassment of riches that defined an entire generation of cinema, and I struggle to even narrow it down below double digits!

My Welsh heritage makes me kinda want to pick Suo Gan from 'Empire of the Sun', but he didn't write it, he just arranged it (beautifully.) As a massive Star Wars fan, I feel like I have to put the entirety of that work in the zeroth position in the interests of fairness, or it'd swallow up everything else. But if one must give an honourable mention there it's have to be Leia's Theme; my favourite performance of which was for the musical tribute to the late Carrie Fisher in 2017 (name one other person on the planet that can shush a boisterous crowd to silence so effectively!)

So rather than go down the usual routes, I think I'll pick one of his more overlooked scores in 'Home Alone', and it's main theme 'Somewhere in My Memory'. Just a wholesome, sensitive musical piece for a movie that I was the perfect age for when it came out. Harry Potter fans will no doubt hear some familiar flourishes in this one.

If anyone is interested in digging deeper into Williams' work--and musical scoring in general--I recommend having a listen to David W. Collins' podcast 'The Soundtrack Show'.

I really think War of the Worlds is one Spielberg's most underrated movies, and it also has a fantastic score from John Williams.

His season 3 revamp for "Lost in Space"s theme is pretty iconic too:
