Sony Spider-Verse discussion thread

I'll believe they'll make a Hypno Hustler film when I'm getting the DVD from the public library :lol:. Outside of Kraven, which I remember seeing pictures from the set so they must have filmed it, Sony is huge on announcing a bunch of stupid Spider-Man connected movies but not making them. I don't care how popular Glover is, if Sony wastes money on a Hypno Hustler film its going to bomb harder then Morbius, and probably without even giving the internet any mildly amusing memes in the process like Morbius did.

Sony struck gold with a bunch of people wasting their money to see the mediocre first Venom film, so they seemed to think that would happen every time. But Venom 2 made, based on numbers I can find, over $350 million less then the first film. Then Morbius didn't even make half of Venom 2. I'm betting that the Kraven film will probably do worse (no memes to get some ironic ticket sales), and Hypno Hustler isn't going to make more then Kraven.

Its like some Sony executive gets paid per project they green light at this point, regardless of how stupid it is.
 
Y'know what, with DC and MCU doing what they do I'm OK with Sony giving us El Muerto and Hypno-Hustler lol. Venom, Morbius, El Muerto, Hypno-Huster, is Kraven still in the works? Awesome!
 
I'd love to get some actual insight from Sony on their thought process around their movies. Unless there's some Producers-style grifting going on they're not deliberately trying to lose money but they can't seriously believe that "Kraven" or "El Muerto" or this are going to make a massive amount of money for them.

I think that, in theory, using obscure characters could be an advantage to them, because there's no baggage. For instance, the Guardians of the Galaxy were an obscure team, but that gave the MCU the freedom to reinvent them in a new way and make it work. I've said before that I think Sony should've just tried to make each character they had the rights to work on their own, without trying to fit them all into a shared superhero universe, and let each one be true to its own distinct genre -- e.g. Morbius as a horror movie, Black Cat as a sexy heist movie, Silver Sable as an international espionage thriller, etc. Most audiences wouldn't even have known they were comics characters, so they could've just been a source of IP for a bunch of diverse standalone movies.

Unfortunately, it's the execution that matters more than the concept, and Sony's execution has been pretty lame. They could, in theory, have found a way to make fresh, worthwhile movies based on even the most obscure or unlikely characters -- but they didn't. That's not the fault of the characters. It's a poor artist who blames their tools. Even Hypno-Hustler could be turned into a good movie if someone talented enough found the right way to do it, but instead, Sony has pretty much given us schlock.
 
The one that really shocks me is the one with Spidey with the paper bag over his head and the Fantastic Four uniform. I know it's from a comic, but it's not a version of him I ever expected to see on screen.
 
^ That's actually one that doesn't work for me, because it was the main Earth-616 Spidey who lost his costume and had to get home from the FF's headquarters. He only wore that outfit for a couple of hours, at most. Yes, it was funny, and yes, the action figure made it even funnier, but it wasn't like this Spider-Man went on a lot of adventures in that look.

But I'm really happy about the Toei Supaida-Man being included.
 
Still crossing my fingers for the Nicholas Hammond and Christopher Daniel Barnes versions, with voice cameos. Apparently the Spectacular Spider-Man version is half-visible on the poster, so maybe we'll hear Josh Keaton as well.
 
If they do I hope they animate the Hammond Spider-Man to move in that weird way the 70s live action Spidey moved.

You mean the parts where he's clearly suspended on a wire rig?

I always liked the way the suit actor tilted his head to convey his reactions. As a kid, that was the first time I noted the need to exaggerate things like that in the absence of facial expression.
