Thankfully, I think the ship was evacuated of all nonessential personnel beforehand. So at least the kids and civilians lived.

Indeed. The point was to show the Dominion was a force to be reckoned with. What better way than to see them easily handle a Galaxy class ship?
Who knows why the Dominion ships could fire through the shields of Odyssey but did they also fly through the shields or did Odyssey lower the shields for some reason?
They learned the age old trick of reversing the polarity.
The Dominion had nearly 2 years to prepare against Starfleet at that time, so they had time refit theirvweapons to go through theur shields. Even Weyoun in "CALL TO ARMS" was shocked that their weapons weren't penetrating DS9's shields because "Federation shields have always been ineffective against our weapons."
And that suicide run... Odyssey was already heavily damaged, so it's no surprise that ramming destroyed them. Even a ship with full shields can't defend against a ship barreling at you at full speed... look at the Klingon ships in "TEARS OF THE PROPHETS" when the Jem'Hadar was ramming them.
Except Kirk had never even heard of a Gorn. I would think that between Spock, Sam, and his ship having been attacked by them under his predecessor's command that the name would have come up.
My WTF: Captain Christopher we're going to beam you (who knows everything) into the body of your previous self and that's going to... Fix... Everything? How does that even work in pretend? I didn't buy that when I was seven!
Oh, and of course Captain Picard (twice?): "We have to let them all die because otherwise it will harm their civilization!" Run that one by me again Jean-Luc?

They have no idea it is the Gorn until Kirk is told and then taken away. Until then they are just unidentified aliens in an unknown region of space. Spock had no time to debrief Kirk on it. The data was limited up until that point.
Right. But given what we've seen Gorn do not very long ago in the past, Kirk should break into a sweat when he hears the name. Riker knew that the Enterprise had run into someone taking a shower with their clothes on. Kirk doesn't know about the time that several members of the crew were eaten by these things including causing the death of the Chief Engineer?
Firing energy weapons through shields made of energy can make sense with technobabble but a solid object such as a ship passing though shields, even if the shields are weak, is too weird?
Shields are supposed to repel different objects heading for the ship. Shields were weak and the Odyssey was damaged but even with few % of shields left a solid object shouldn't go through..... right?

Kirk doesn't break in to a sweat, even facing unusual or impossible enemies. He does what any good soldier would do-assess the enemy, capabilities, and possible tactics. He also knows this isn't the typical situation since the Metrons intervene.
Clearly. But he also acts like he's never heard the word Gorn. And if we take the events of SNW as having happened, I don't see how that is possible.
Ok. I think it's one of those things that he has heard in passing and put little stock in it, especially since Spock reports that little is know about the area. Kirk is a man who is a bit myopic at times. So, I lean towards I know of it, but I don't know it.
Smaller objects than a starship, sure. Objects that go at slower speeds, sure.
But a starship hurtling toward at ramming speed? Full shields won't help much.
Depends on size and velocity. And if the Jem'Hadar made a habit of kamikaze attacks, they probably had modifications on their ships to make them more effective.
The sheer kinetic energy of such an attack would be off the charts.
I will say that when I first watched "The Jem'hadar" when it aired, I figured the battle was over when Odyssey turned tail and began limping home. Even when the Jem'hadar ship started its suicide run I figured one of the runabouts might get a lucky shot and everyone would breathe a sigh of relief. I don't think I really expected them to pull out all the stops and destroy the ship entirely. Even after the impact, part of me thought, "So they're going to have the Odyssey get away, just massively damaged..."
In its first few seasons DS9 had a number of, "This isn't TNG," moments, and this was perhaps the most severe of them, because there seemed to be no way that this episode wouldn't have major repercussions for the rest of the series.

It’s not really a wink, she’s pulling away from Pike’s grasp and sort of making a grimacing face, but you’re right that it’s odd and doesn’t really work.
Yeah, that was the entire point of using a Galaxy Class. It was supposed to shock those that have seen TNG.
