Will O'Brien be in Season 3?

I think Colm Meaney said that he was done with spacesuits.
That doesn’t mean anything though.
Meaney is very old school and contrary by Hollywood standards. He is one of the few I would believe if he says he isn't going back to a character for no good reason.

If he does come back though I'm sure it will be chained up and beaten in a prison somewhere

Interest.

pretty much. I’m sure Matalas or McMahon would jump/have jumped at the chance to have him in their respective shows but if he’s not interested there isn’t much they could do.

if he is going to reprise the role, I would expect Lower Decks to be more likely give that it would be just a simple voice over.

I'd love to have Picard visit the Academy where Miles is still teaching and is now the head of the Engineering Dept., and Keiko has joined him as the head of the Xeno-Botany Dept. where she was also given the opportunity to redesign the Academy grounds to reflect all the worlds of the Federation.

Now that Boothby has passed and the O'Briens are empty-nesters with Molly and Yoshi and any other kids off doing their own things, Keiko and Miles walk the grounds she designed every day to check on things and have a picnic lunch. Together, they have become the de facto new Boothby for the cadets, dispensing homespun wisdom, advice, and anecdotes, since the new groundskeeper has a bit of a standoffish personality.

Talking to the cadets also allows them to live vicariously as if they were hanging out with their kids. They still talk and visit with them as often as they can, but with their distant postings it can be difficult, so talking with the cadets helps them cope with missing their kids.

Welp. There's my new headcannon.

Also I think a few actors have said they were "done" with Trek (Stewart included) until the dumped a very large bag of money in front of them, so never say never to never seeing Miles ever again, though he got a proper goodbye as a cast member than prehaps any other character.

Patrick Stewart is quite rightly a legendary actor. But if you wave enough cash at him he’ll literally play a talking turd. So I’m quite happy he didn’t turn down the opportunity to play Picard again.

So what's prevent Colm Meaney from return as Chief O'Brien again today? It seems that he still active in his job as an actor.

He's a working actor, he isn't desperate to do a cameo and they wouldn't pay him what he is worth if they did. He'd probably come back if they gave me a good script, but most people probably just see him doing a cameo which isn't what he'd want to do.

I think doing voice acting is vastly different though, they get paid a boatload to just read from a script for a week. That's why so many high profile actors seem to do them now, even video games. I think the main reason Stewart took Picard on again is because he is old and roles for him dried up.

IIRC Patrick’s reasoning for playing the poo emoji was because he could. He thought it was hilarious.

Patrick loves crass humour, he’s on the record stating he’s a big fan of Family Guy and other American adult cartoons.

It’s how Seth McFarlane was able to get him to do voice roles on his shows.

Patrick isn’t hurting for money, he does things now because he wants to, not solely for the pay check.

It’s certainly something to tell the grandkids!

He's not George Clooney. Most actors are desperate enough to do a cameo, because why pass up free money for little effort.

Because he lives in blissful semi-retirement in a Mallorcan villa and can freely pick and choose what he wants to do. Most of his acting itch seems to be taken up with Irish cinema these days.

I’ve just been to the cinema to watch a film called ‘Unwanted’ because it had Colm Meaney in it. It was a cheesy yet fun horror (comedy?). It was a bit too gory for my liking but it was great to see Meaney back on screen.

I hope that we get to see him in Picard season three (or beyond), but if Meaney is done with Star Trek then I guess that he is done.

Maybe because ‘Unwanted’ was a bit stupid he would *definitely* not feel stupid coming back to Star Trek?

How will we ever find out how O’Brien became the most important man in Starfleet history though if he does *not* come back? I guess that a throwaway line could explain it at least?

Here's another interview from a different Irish TV show where he talks a bit about Star Trek.

While Meaney does make it obvious in many interviews that for him Star Trek was just a steady job and he's not in love with the franchise as such, he's grateful for the opportunities it gave him and he's quite complimentary about his co-stars and the fans.

A bit like Ian McKellen playing a bit part on British soap Coronation Street. He thought it was fun, something he hadn't done before, and he's in a position where he can do whatever he wants as far as acting is concerned.

I'm also inclined to remember Michael Caine's line about Jaws: The Revenge: "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it paid for, and it is terrific."

That Caine line is epic. One of the coolest ever I think.

Colm isn't "most actors" and has bloody steady work. Considering the variety and range Meany does bring to screen, I think he's probably one of the actors that might even resent a tiny bit that where a lot of people know him from is wearing some silly jumpsuit. Even if it does give him a sense of "immortality" as an actor to a relatively small audience group.

Since 2011 Meany has starred in:

24 Films with a 25th currently in Post Production.

8 differernt TV shows Including all 51 episodes of Hell on Wheels (and was nominted twice) multiple episodes on other shows and a recurring role in The Serpent Queen.

He managed to break into america and star in a number of TV shows and movies some 6 years before being cast in his (relative bit part) in TNG. He apparently, like Micheal Dorn, nearly didn't go back for DS9 until it was revealed to him he'd be a main cast member and it thus represent nice, steady work.

I could still see him taking a trip to CA to film a couple of scenes and to hang with some old colleagues if given the chance. Personally I would be fine with someone putting me up in a hotel to spend a couple of days working with people I last worked with 20 years ago just for the novelty of it. That said, it would more likely have to be the DS9 cast, not the TNG cast that would be a draw the only DS9 regular colleague we know about is Dorn.
