He was a little disOriented at the time. . .
Not so much, in an acting sense, but the differences between East Asian ethnic types are quite a bit more distinct than -- to use your examples -- between an Englishman and a Frenchman or between an Englishman and an Irishman. For Asians, it's kind of a big deal to them not to be all lumped together into a single, generic "Asian person" category, because they are so much more different, ethnically, culturally and linguistically than most Europeans are from each other.I think it would be great to have a Chinese main cast character on Star Trek, although naturally they should do a lot more to flesh out and create a well-rounded character.
One thing I thought a bit funny was how they cast Garrett Wang (Chinese) to play Harry Kim (Korean), and Linda Park (Korean) to play Hoshi Sato (Japanese). Considering the ethnic tensions/differences...oh well. At least the execs didn't do what they did to Margaret Cho (Korean) in her short-lived sitcom, asking her "Can you act more...Chinese????!!!" Accounts indicated that the suits were quite nervous and scrutinized Kate Mulgrew as the first female lead though.
Is it really any different that having an Englishman playing a Frenchman? Or (to step outside of trek) the English James Bond being played by the Irish Pierce Brosnan?

Ok, if the time of the most recent "conflict" makes a difference: a Frenchman and a German then. Or a German and Russian.I think it would be great to have a Chinese main cast character on Star Trek, although naturally they should do a lot more to flesh out and create a well-rounded character.

Englishmen and frenchmen didn't go to war with each other 50 years ago. That's the difference. I hate it when people use this analogy. There is still tension between the Asian countries, so they still take offensive. I'm sure if Linda Park mention her role as a Japanese character to the older generation Koreans, she would get some pretty angry comments.
Wow. I was just curious. I am making no accusations, only observations, precipitated by a documented reference by someone involved in the early creation of Trek.Oh come on. No offense but this is getting out of hand.
I am just curious. Although I am not one to find racism behind every bush (consult my wife for that department), The absence of Chinese characters does seem to be a pattern. Given what Gerrold has written, it seems there should be an explanation, not necessarily racist. For all I could guess, somebody in Gene's family was tortured by the Chinese during the Korean war.
The raw hatred of many Chinese towards Japanese for WWII is fresh as today's newspaper. Time is not a factor in hate.

[Gene did much to bring about equality. When Gerrold wrote that there was one Trek series. One set of actors. To expect Gene to put every race in the show is a bit silly and naive. He had an Asian already in Sulu. And has been pointed out Harry Kim is Chinese. So I have no idea what you are getting on about.
