The Last of Us (HBO)

Anything not implicitly white supremacist gets called woke now. It's a derangement.
I read somewhre that there are more biracial couples in UK that in all the U.S.A. (not as a percentage of the population, but in absolute numbers!). It makes you think.

I have seen people complain they didn't cast Elliot Page as Ellie, which is just odd at this point.
Elliot Page as Ellie? Really? I just don't see that at all. Even before he transitioned, and was closer to Ellie's age, I can't have seen him being right for the role.

I never heard about that, but I don't really see where she looks that much like him.

finally watched. it is so close to the game, its crazy. i can see why they kind of took out most of the tutorial-level bit under Boston, though. speeds things up.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was a fan favorite for Joel because ... jaw line I guess.

Hmm, I dunno. So far as I can see, wounds aren't being universally treated with a bandage round the forearm.

Also, Joel should have died multiple times by now.

as long as we get operatic alternate ending, I'm good

*Ellen* Page I could see. Elliot Page not so much? Considering he's transitioning/transitioned would he have even taken a role playing a female character? (And it's important for the story with Joel that it be a female he has to protect.)

Because, you know, he's not blatantly Hispanic. Not like those people who like to show off their Hispanicity /s

He's more in the category of Oscar Isaac who can play the entire spectrum of ethnicity.

Second episode was pretty good. It's been a while since I played the game, but I distinctly remember it was humans who attacked them in the state house, not zombies. I don't agree with that change, it really makes a big difference in tone that the only danger out here is the zombies.

Also I still don't get why in all the scenes from the start of the pandemic, all the scientists are just assuming there's no cure. Again, we cure fungal infections all the time, they have not justified why these people assumed without even trying there isn't a cure. They should have tried standard cures before realizing they didn't work.

You can see a 35-year-old playing a 14-year-old?

Ellie in The Last Of Us was so clearly based on Elliot* Paige that he himself went public complaining they stole his likeness, and there was some talk of lawsuits, especially since he was himself mocapping and providing his likeness to a competing game, Beyond: Two Souls. Which, in a separate bit of shittiness, resulted in "digital nudes" of him leaking from the games production.

That likness, and people's inability to imagine actors growing older and changing, is what's likely behind the fancasting. Like how people keep posting about how Micheal Cera should play a 15 year old Morty in a live action Rick and Morty, using pics of him from episodes of Arrested Development that aired 20 years ago.

As for today's episode, they know how to make a hell of a cold open. They really nailed the look of the game in this episode. Was disappointed in the clickers though. Just looked like a dude wearing a fake head.

*Edited to fit proper conventions as per replies. If someone wants details though they have to google "Ellen" as it happened prior to Elliot's name change

The podcast that goes with the episode covers the changes made in bringing this story from the video game to the series.

We know that there are other dangers, besides the infected, out there beyond the QZ. They were briefly mentioned in both episodes.

It's been done before. Whether it "works" or not is open for debate but plenty of TV shows and movies have used 30-something actors to play teenagers, particularly if they're young-looking.
