I have a complicated opinion when it comes to photo reference used in comics. Basing a character's appearance on someone real can work quite well or be incredibly distracting. (And don't get me started on lazy photo-ref use when the artist doesn't pay attention to continuity, and/or uses really common images that just take you mentally back to the source.)

I'm not sure what to think of J.K. Woodward's Jennifer Aniston in full Friends mode seen here in Captain's Log: Jellico. They should have called her Ensign Rachem Greep.

Also, this alien design makes it look like they're giving a "Ooooh!" to the booty. "Hello, HR?"

Well, I did tell JK to give everyone 90s haircuts, so it would look like later-season TNG......

It's also blue in its first appearance, probably because it was based on the original model before it was changed

I kinda see what they're going for with Sisko's stance, but I don't think it's aged well nor is it practical in any way to have someone bigoted in Starfleet. I'm assuming the story (which I have read, albeit a decade ago and have zero memory of) ends with the green fella realising the error of his ways?

    More on that...

Trying to address it by analogy, just like Trek does

Yeah -- it feels like they were trying to straddle the fence and say both sides had valid points of view. Which is wrong when one side's point of view is that the other side shouldn't be allowed to exist. Though back then, they probably felt they had to hedge, or their editors or publishers insisted that they hedge.

I mean, the comic deserves credit for including a gay character at all -- I think it was the first Trek comic to do so, and certainly one of the first Trek stories overall to do so. But like a lot of first steps that seemed progressive at the time, it seems regressive compared to where we are today.

Not really. In the end they agree to share a room just until the starship arrives to take them back to Earth. It's interesting to see Yoshi talk about how bigoted Halakith is, while also making jokes about how ugly she is and calling her a lizard.

That first panel couldn't be more 90s comics if it tried with its ridiculous T&A pose!

Remember that Pava's debut scene in the comic had her introducing herself to Nog completely naked because she figured it would make a Ferengi feel more at home in an alien culture.

Now we know what inspired Seth to come up with the Moclans like Bortus in THE ORVILLE.
That HAD to have stuck in his brain.

I had completely forgotten; I don't think I'd looked at any of the Starfleet Academy comics since the 90s until yesterday, when I flipped through a half dozen and read the "T'Priell Revealed!" storyline.

There were some oddities. Commander Zund is, according to the "Previously in" pages, only 21 years ago. And a full Commander? Starfleet seems to have given the rank to her symbiont. (I also thought Kathryn Winnick would be perfect for Commander Zund... if she were closer to mid-thirties.)

The main thing was how much this was a 90s X-Men comic. Specifically, in style and tone, it reminded me of Generation X. Starfleet Academy as portrayed here is really just Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, and all the cadets of Omega Squad have their super powers and/or tortured backstory. John Royle's art, at least on the issues I read, was very much in the Joe Mad/Chris Bachalo school of mid-90s X-Men comics. And Chris Cooper's writing would fit seamlessly alongside the overwrought, unsubtle post-Claremont style of the Lobdell/Nicieza era.

I was surprised how tangential Nog was. He's in the book, but the focus was on the original characters. If I'd remembered the series was like this, I'd forgotten it. I do remember I wasn't super enthusiastic about Starfleet Academy at the time.

It's nice Pava showed up in Titan, but T'Priell and Astrun were the characters yesterday I really wanted to see where they ended up. We do get a flash-forward to Astrun's future, in about fifteen years, which gives us a hint about Zund's fate, but I really want to know whether the psyhic equilibrium forged by Selke and T'Priell holds and how it develops over time.

Yeah. It had some interesting characters and storylines, but I always found its writing style way too comic-booky in the bad sense. For some reason, for most of the history of comic books, they've been far more tolerant of stilted, unnatural dialogue than other mediums. SA's dialogue was very much in that exaggerated, melodramatic vein that didn't sound like anything real people would actually say. So it didn't really feel like it quite fit in the Star Trek universe.

I imagine there's more than a few Janeway/Chakotay shippers who would have loved to see them go for a swim together.

Aliens with big holes in their necks, and a nice Borg story in which 7 learns the meaning of nostalgia. After PIC S1, it's also interesting that here she already was the queen of a mini collective.

That scene is a dramatization of what Worf described in "Let He Who is Without Sin...," not "When it Rains."

And honored to see so much of Perchance to Dream here. :)

I didn't mind the "quirky" art style for N-Vector. I certainly found it refreshing after too many Trek comics in the decade prior used a "superhero" style. I'll never get used to Starfleet uniforms that look like they were spray-painted on to a world-class bodybuilder.

    ...an exaggeration? Perhaps!

I was also flicking through Perchance to Dream the other day and getting way too into my nerd head about the uniforms. It's a weird mix of TNG and DS9 uniforms, a la Generations. I guess it backs up the idea that for a time, people could just wear whichever one they personally preferred. At least Riker's uniform fits properly in the comic. ;)
