DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

So, there will be a new version of the Suicide Squad? And some current actors will be staying on. Perhaps Gadot and Momoa?

Hypothetical: The filmed DC universe would be in better shape today if WB had fired Snyder after the disappointing reception of 'Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice' and written off Justice League instead of trying to course correct the perceived shortcomings of the Snyder-verse. A full on reboot then would have been better received.

There is not enough salt in the universe for this one. Either they really have a plan to continue with the established cast, just in a new continuity, or they don't know at this point what to do with the Snyder continuity and how to switch over.

Doubtful; Cavill's gone--a widely disappointing fact--and a third Wonder Woman film is in limbo or cancelled, depending on the source of that particular information. Further, the pick-ups of Cavill and Gadot shot for The Flash movie were cut, and there's no news of Affleck continuing as Batman beyond the scenes shot for The Flash and Aquaman 2 films, so that suggests the established cast--rather, the big three--are a thing of the past as of the end of the 2023 roster of movies.

Regarding not knowing what to do with the Snyder/MoS continuity: well, the current belief is that Gunn is rebooting the DC movies, so that closes the book on the MoS continuity, no matter how abrupt and unwanted that decision will be to the DCEU fanbase.

The only potholes on the DCEU road were trying to Marvel-ize the DCEU with the disastrous Whedon crap seen in JL, and Jenkins having more control to do it her way in WW84. The Mos continuity generated a large fanbase, and it all flowed perfectly into Zack Snyder's Justice League as originally intended.

I'm assuming it means recasting or not depends on the project. They could easily keep the Shazam cast, for example, and if Blue Beetle is successful it would make sense to keep him around. Regardless of what some people seem to think the DC movies really haven't connected to each other that much, outside of the Snyder directed stuff, and anything not directly involving the Justice League could easily be kept. Shazam's Superman cameo didn't show a face (and the costume is easily ignorable, especially for a post credit scene), and all his movie really needs is for Superman and Batman to exist in his universe (to justify the little news articles and Freddy's keepsakes), and Gunn isn't doing a brand new Superman apparently, just early career which could still fit with Shazam.

The Suicide Squad already basically ignores the first Suicide Squad, so Leto's Joker and Batfleck's cameo don't really matter, and its easy enough to ignore Flash and Aquaman in Peacemaker, or retroactively act like they were different actors. Heck, there doesn't seem to have official confirmation that Mamoa is done with Aquaman after AM2, if its as successful as the first one they might keep him around.

Basically it would be very easy for Gunn to pick and choose actors to keep or not depending on the project, and it would make sense to do that even if a lot of the DCEU specific stuff is going to go away.

Ray Fisher seems to have gone off the deep end. Now he's going after James Gunn.

That guy definitely got screwed over, but he is also absolutely his own worst enemy, and has worn out most of my sympathy for him at this point.

I believe it is actually the opposite. If the studio had kept their fingers out of BvS and JL, and allowed Snyder to make the films he wanted to make then they would have a successful franchise today. Maybe not Marvel money--but profitable. Snyders extended cut of BvS really improved the film over the theatrical version and it would have made more sense to audiences who don't know the characters. Snyder's theatrical Justice League wouldn't have been four hours long of course, but a 2.5 hour film would have worked well.

Yes, we know the Marvel-izing of JL was a terrible, idiotic choice, but it was largely ignored because audiences knew it was not the film / story as Snyder envisioned it, so at the time JL was released, audiences understood that BvS was left in a holding pattern (when they assumed--at the time--that the real JL would never come to pass).

Taking BvS' theatrical version into consideration, the studio did not tinker with a story so strong to the point that anyone would not know exactly where and how BvS leads to ZSJL.

That's true, but we were also left with an incomplete portrayal of Bruce, Lois and Clark to the point where the life had been sucked out of the characters. The extended cut remedied a lot of that for me and also tied the disparate pieces of Lex's scheme together so that he actually had a coherent plan.

Dwayne Johnson has spoken about the DC shakeup and its implications for Black Adam

My passionate friends

I wanted to give you a long-awaited Black Adam update regarding the character’s future in the new DC Universe.

James Gunn and I connected, and Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling. However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.

James and I have known each other for years and have always rooted for each other to succeed. It’s no different now, and I will always root for DC (and Marvel) to win and WIN BIG.
You guys know me, and I have very thick skin – and you can always count on me to be direct with my words.
These decisions made by James and DC leadership represent their vision of DCU through their creative lens.
After 15 years of relentless hard work to finally make Black Adam, I’m very proud of the film we delivered for fans worldwide. I will always look back on the fan reaction to Black Adam with tremendous gratitude, humility and love.

We did great.

To my very passionate and vocal Black Adam/Super Hero genre fans – I love you, THANK YOU, and I will ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOU and do my best to deliver and entertain you.
What a helluva month – now we all need some Teremana!
Have a productive week and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you and your families!

Gunn has also tweeted to say that he can’t wait to collaborate (with The Rock and Seven Buck) soon

When one user asked about plans to recast all of the main DCU, Gunn called it an "untrue theory," and said they weren't "recasting everyone except The Suicide Squad."

So there's still hope for a Birds of Prey sequel? I'll have to read the whole article for context but maybe?

That said, still frustrating for Henry Cavil's situation.

It's gonna get real ugly online if some actors are kept but not Cavill. He's the one that seems more endeared in fans' hearts. It would also come off as quite hypocritical if Gunn is saying(I'm assuming he's saying) he wants a fresh take but still keeps some and not others.

Gunn posted a message of support for Whedon when allegations first came out.
No, he didn't. Alan Tudyk posted a message of support for Whedon, if one could say that much, because all it said was that he never encountered any of the kind of problems when working with Whedon as were described in the allegations, and Gunn liked that message. Tudyk later apologized, saying he was not involved in the conflict and as such shouldn't have interjected as he did, that he shouldn't have posted that message, which Gunn then also read, reflected on, and agreed that he himself shouldn't have liked the original message as he didn't really know the situation, and apologized for liking a tweet. And Fisher apparently still can't let that go.

Especially if they were retianed for a new continuity, but as of this date, there are more indicators that Gadot (cut from The Flash along with Cavill and no WW3 on the horizon) has no future in DC films.

I thought they had said that Gadot was still in the Flash movie, it was just a scene with Cavill that was cut.

As of this week, Gadot is no longer Wonder Woman:

Wonder Woman and Superman cameos in ‘The Flash?’ Don’t get your hopes up too high

Warner Bros. found other ways to cut ties with actors Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot, days after bringing their futures as DC superheroes to a close.

Cavill and Gadot, who respectively starred as Superman and Wonder Woman in DC’s “Justice League” film franchise, have been removed from the studio’s “The Flash,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. The stars filmed cameos for the Ezra Miller-led movie, but those clips are “now being cut,” sources told THR.

Warner Bros.’ phasing out of Cavill and Gadot in “The Flash” comes amid some major creative overhaul at DC Studios by new bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran.

As part of their efforts to redefine their vision for DC, Gunn and Safran shelved director Patty Jenkins‘ “Wonder Woman 3” and decided to bring Cavill’s time as Clark Kent to an abrupt close.

Didn't he say the same thing about Cavill? I'll eat my spleen if we ever see Dwayne in a DC movie again.

He did say the same about Cavill when he announced Cavill was not in the new Superman movie. There is nothing to say Cavill will not be returning at some point.

They can easily return. If Patrick Stewart can come back as Professor X, Toby as Spider-Man, Routh as Superman, Keaton (maybe?) as Batman, etc, there's always a chance or story where someone like Cavill as Superman can return.
