Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

You might think that, but by calling them "livestock" people are able to get away with the kind of abuse and neglect that is truly, truly horrifying . I follow a rescue that goes out to a horse auction every month, and there are always horses that are literally walking skeletons, who are so sick they can barely breath, and with huge open wounds, but since they're livestock, people can just dump them at the auctions and nobody can do anything about it. She was at an auction a couple weeks ago and there was horse there who was so sick that she sat him with as he died right there in the one of the auction's pens.
Sorry, this is just something I've become really passionate about.
Part of the issue is that the AWA does not cover horses unless they are used in research or teaching. An amendment of that law might do something to help horses in certain situations (eg, racing), but it doesn't seem like a priority for APHIS/USDA for whatever reasons...

I agree, there need to be tighter rules regarding horses. I mean, we have strict rules about how to treat animals we're eating, so why can't they look after animals who serve us in so many ways?

On the lighter side re horses, a cowboy on e said that if there was such a thing as reincarnation, he'd want to come back as a bucking bronc... you work 8 seconds, then eat and sleep the rest of the time.

Whoooo! 11111 posts!

Woke up early this morning to go to a virtual shareholder meeting thinking it'd be some kind of formal presentation with a question and answer session I could use to thoughtfully consider my votes. I log on, they just say "All the proposals have already reached the 50% vote threshold so they all pass" and the meeting ends.

I think part of the problem with horses, even though they're categorized as livestock, for most people they're pretty much just pets. Of all the horses I've seen in my area pretty all the ones I've seen don't appear to be used to be used for anything more than riding through the neighborhood or the park. Some of them might be used for rodeos or shows or things like that, but there aren't any places where they're used for rounding up cattle or anything like that, which is the closes to "livestock" that they'd probably come.

Yes, this is true. When I was taking veterinary classes years ago one of my instructors described horses as occupying a 'grey area', precisely because they are neither completely livestock animals nor are they truly "pets" (i.e. small animal pets like a cat or dog). It's because horses are still used as commodities that any Federal protections would come into play, so those racing, rodeo, etc. are kind of outliers these days, from the legal perspective. Peoples' pets also are not afforded coverage by AWA, but most states have at least some animal cruelty laws on the books, which can give them some coverage in cases that warrant protections.
Incidentally, about a decade ago I contacted a Federal official and inquired why horses used for racing and rodeos are not covered by AWA and never got a response. Aside from a lengthy amendment, I assume staffing is a real problem. They would also likely close down every race track int he country if they started doing inspections... I've seen the medical records for the Kentucky Derby horses in the past (the pinnacle of the sport) and most of them are abhorrent.

There's definitely one horse that is not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer:

Wildfire.

I mean, come on. "There came a killing frost"? A killing frost is when it gets really cold overnight and so you should cover up your flowers and garden vegetables. Wildfire is such a fucking doofus that he gets lost in THAT?

Oh, and just try to get that song out of your head now. You're welcome.

Wildfire got lost in a blizzard. He left a warm stall to run off into a blizzard -- he's still a doofus and so is the girl who ran out into the same blizzard calling for that horse. dumb song and thanks for that stupid earworm.

Wildfire was a rebel. No one was going to break his spirit even unto his own death. His owner was heartbroken and she goes looking for him in the same storm, unto her own death. Her boyfriend was heartbroken and he goes looking for her in the same storm...

They are all together in the end. Niagara Falls. lol

Had a headache most of today and when I closed my eyes I imagined the Grinch with lightning coming out of his eyes, like he'd eaten chaos emeralds from Sonic the Hedgehog. And then later on I was driving my picker around yelling out "SUPER GRINCHIO 64!"

So the Royal Canadian Mint officially stopped making pennies in 2012. This year, to celebrate (why?) the 10 year anniversary of the last penny struck, they have released some commemorative coins designed to look like the penny, and even have a 1 cent face value, but are obscenely expensive.

penny-2012-small.png

Original penny (for reference)

penny-2022-1oz.png

1 oz silver "penny"... this is the most "reasonably" priced one, and costs the equivalent of "only" 9995 pennies.

penny-2022-5oz.png

5 oz silver "penny", costs the equivalent of 59,995 pennies.

penny-2022-5kg.png

5 kg silver "penny", costs the equivalent of 1,099,995 pennies!

I don't know why they're doing this. Even if I really missed the penny (which I don't), I wouldn't pay $100 to "commemorate" it, and the more expensive options are out of the question regardless.

I guess I'll just hang on to those original pennies (the "actually worth 1 cent" variety) I saved a decade ago and commemorate it that way.

"shrug" I guess they see people might want to buy them, especially if they are packaged nicely......

I bought a limited edition 50 cent coin the Royal Australian Mint did and yeah it cost $10 so "shrug"

I'll try and post a pic into this message when I can.

Edit: Ooh pics didn't come out too bad.

One of the worst things with horses is the livestock auctions, you can dump horses there in literally any condition and there are no reprecussions. There are horses with huge open wounds, walking around on broken legs, and who are literally walking skeletons, but since they're "livestock" nobody does anything about it.
These are from the last auction Tahlia from the rescue All Seated in a Barn went to back during the first weekend of the month.

Oh, and as a sad note the black and white horse who's gums she shows, died there at the auction. Tahlia was there with him, holding as he died in the pen.

Yeah, Tahlia goes to auctions every month, and at each one there are literally hundreds of horses and donkeys and this is what the kind of condition most of them are in. I think the last auction had 400 or 500 hundred horses and donkeys, and some have had even more.

Those are nice, and I would say there is a big difference between $10 and $100, or $600... or $11000.

I suppose there must be a market for them, or they probably wouldn't have made them. I'm just having trouble thinking that people would want to spend that much money commemorating the penny, when no one seemed to care that much about the penny in the first place.

That's true..... I don't plan on breaking the packaging of mine then it just becomes a plain old coin. Plus that colourful design is embossed on the coin itself.

Speaking of coins, I think it's just dumb that we still use dollar bills, which are fragile and expensive to make. The quarter was introduced when it was worth more than three of today's dollars, after all. And at the rate we're inflating, pretty soon a five-spot of today will be worth less.

Most people here seem to have taken to cards and options which don't involve handling cash and even I find the idea of using actual money a bit grotty because money was listed as one of the dirtiest things people handle from day to day, especially coins.

Yeah, most of our money these days is 1's and 0's... no chance of THAT ever coming around to bite us in the butt, right?
