DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

I get that Gunn has his own vision for Superman, but Superman The Movie and its sequel, MOS & BVS are all set early in his career. (Ironically, the film that picks up with an older, established Superman had the youngest-looking actor in the lead). It might have been nice to see an older Superman in action (especially as his leading lady would’ve been one of the most watchable actresses working in Hollywood right now, assuming no recast). Ah well.

The people who wanted the MoS Shared Continuity Universe tossed out are ultimately getting their wish, but starting over isn't actually going to help Warner Bros. Discovery with their monetary problems because they've already signalled to audiences that supporting more than half of their upcoming DC-related films is going to be pointless, therefore lessening said films' overall box office earnings long before they actually come out.

The absolute BEST THING about Superman & Lois is that it's *NOT* a Superman origin story. Don't need that shit. People know it, people have seen it.

I don't really have interest in seeing a new DCU revisit again.

Gunn said it isn't an origin story.

They should swap the Aquaman and Flash release dates around and shoot some extra scenes for the latter that allows it to act as the end of the original DCU.

True.

So this goes back to Gunn and his tendencies: if the DCEU continuity is a closed chapter, will he attempt to MCU-ize DC films going forward?

Further, how likely will it be to see Affleck as Batman or Gadot as Wonder Woman simply step into an all-new film universe? Where is Dwayne Johnson in this future? If the DCEU actors finish their association with the franchise after 2023, its difficult to see a sizable part of the fanbase who supported the DCEU all along will just toss it over their collective shoulders and wait for the new versions.

Affleck is done with Batman (acting) as he's working exclusively with his new studio.
Dwayne is done as well.

I'm not sure about Gadot, but really, this universe is officially over with maybe a few outliers here and there (Peacemaker and maybe a WW3? But doubtful now on the latter)

Which I honestly am going to miss many aspects of, and there was definitely untapped potential.
But that's just not where they're heading, and it was pretty obvious early on.

People moved from Bale to Affleck to Pattinson with zero issue, the character and movies are in zero danger from the movie going public at large and the majority of fans as well.

Let's be honest. Affleck was barely around anyways to leave a sizeable mark. Pattinson got a movie to himself and, for now, is the face of Batman going forward. Until he's not. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I just wanted to see the Flash movie with the Burtonverse Batman. Give me Michael Keaton as the swan song for the DCEU in its current form and I'll be happy.

I just don't understand, personally, why any of this would affect box office potential of the remaining movies?!? So what if this shared universe is being replaced. I'm going to see Aquaman 2 because I thoroughly enjoyed the first one. I'm going to go see Fury of the Gods because I enjoyed the first one. I'll give Blue Beetle a shot if the trailers look good. I was never going to see Flash because, as much as I love the Flash (he is tied as my favorite DC hero) Ezra Miller is a piece of shit and I won't support him. NONE of this has anything to do with the interconnectedness of the movies to a greater universe. I don't think the vast majority of the movie going audience gives a shit if these movies are interconnected. They'll go if they think they'll be entertained, they'll stay home if they don't.

This is kinda stupid, you have what, 4? movies that are coming out and would say are in the current "Universe" ?

These movies will now tank at the box office because the people in charge have said, this universe is Dead, so why go see it and invest any money or emotions into the movie if we now know for certain that there won't be any more Shazam, etc. even if it makes a Billion. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
It's definitely shooting themselves in the foot and hoping the audience will be there to see them run a marathon.

Shazam Fury of the Gods, Aquaman The Lost King, Blue Beetle and Flashpoint. All those films are now dead ends. It's still early enough for them to bookend them nicely. Why Flash hasn't been outright cancelled yet with Miller's antics is beyond me.

I blame everything regarding DC's situation on WB.

They recut Suicide Squad 1 to be similar to Deadpool 1. Disrupting Ayer's vision and putting it out of step with Snyder's JL.

The executives fired Snyder, brought in Whedon to do an Avengers 1 copycat and spent tens of millions to reshoot a movie that was nearly completed. Like we saw Disney do with Solo on Star Wars. And like Solo, theatrical Justice League was a flop. They spent all that money and rushed it into theaters to hit a 4th quarter deadline for end of the year bonuses.

WW84 flopping and middling reviews. The aftermath of which we are seeing with the current situation regarding Patty Jenkins walking from Wonder Woman 3 and that movie being canned. Given her expanded influence on WW84, its not something execs want to see a repeat of.

Birds of Prey flopped.

Gunn’s own The Suicide Squad flopped.

Ezra Miller self-destructing and jeopardizing the Flash movie. Even back in 2017, the WB execs were hyping Flashpoint to erase the Snyder influence. Now all those execs are gone too.

The Latina Supergirl and mixed Batgirl projects getting canned.

Black Adam flopped.

Don't forget WB’s inaction on those Green Lantern projects they wanted to get going. WB has been saying for years that they’ve had plans for GL and GL Corps on HBOMax.

Aquaman, Shazam, Joker and The Batman are the only DC films that have been pulling their weight. Since JL theatrical, every director, producer writer team has just done their own thing. And that started 5 years ago. It’s almost 2023. Firing Snyder left the DC movies directionless. All the movies made money under him and met their production dates. Why WB didn't move sooner to get a captain of the DC ship before now, I have no idea.

I don't begrudge Gunn and Safran. They want a clean slate to work with. And as I illustrated above, WB mismanaged their properties to an absurd degree. I didn't care that they were recasting Miller. I'm sad and mad to see Gadot and Cavil go. WB certainly had a moment, and they missed it.

P.S.
I would totally be satisfied if the DCEU cast was moved to only ensemble projects. Gunn tweeting out a Kingdom Come adaptation last week was a good idea. Other stories like the New Frontier, wrapping up the Darkseid saga in one movie would be a decent farewell to the old guard.

Rinse, wash and repeat with DC and just superhero films in general. They have gotten so bad the last couple of years imo... I'm surprised people are still running out to see these things.... .....

So, even if they started NOW, no directors chosen, no scripts written, it would still be 2-3 years before anything of the "New Universe" shows up in theatre..
Feel bad for the old guard,
Patty for spending over a year on an new WW and get canned, Henry being confirmed, and unceremoniously fired in 2 month period. Anybody in the upcoming movies that were looking forward to continuing there characters in other movies or tv.

There all worried that people will get confused if there is say a separate say Flash on Tv that whom is in the movies. Uh, No? People aren't usually dumb, they know whats on TV is whatever TV universe, or there own thing, and Movies are movies.

Why Flash hasn't been outright cancelled yet with Miller's antics is beyond me.

There were two reported reasons, as I recall. One was that it was too important to their plans for the universe going forward, though it sounds like that no longer applies. The other was simply that they'd poured too much money into it to cancel -- the potential loss of revenue from Miller's bad press was small compared to the financial hit they'd take if they cancelled the film and didn't try to recoup their investment at least partially, or if they reshot with another lead actor (since they would've had to reshoot pretty much the entire movie). I don't know whether that reason still applies given all the upheaval, though.

Man... I don't think I've ever seen an actor self-destruct as hard as Ezra Miller. I had hoped they would Flashpoint the actor and recast Barry Allen. Liam McIntyre would be my ideal pick. But clean slate it is. Hopefully the new movies don't take too long to get out there.

Moving forward, I suspect the next Superman movie will be a cross between Landis' American Alien and Morrison's New 52 Action Comics. Gunn has been hyping Lobo way too much for him not to be trading fists with Superman ASAP. I know they've been saying Mamoa, but my money is Dave Bautista to take the role.

I would've been down for seeing Gunn's Superman vs Suicide Squad movie. Now Marvel is using that idea for their Thunderbolts movie. Never fail to miss an opportunity, WB.

What I read is that the planned movie will be early in Superman's career but will not be an origin story. Kind
Correct, per Gunn on Twitter.
(especially as his leading lady would’ve been one of the most watchable actresses working in Hollywood right now, assuming no recast)
Gods, yes. I still say Adams is the bigger loss in all this.
they've already signalled to audiences that supporting more than half of their upcoming DC-related films is going to be pointless, therefore lessening said films' overall box office earnings long before they actually come out.
I keep seeing people post variations of this, but as EnderAKH observes, it's pretty nonsensical. Do films really have no value on their own terms and merit, but only in the context of a larger continuity or the prospect of sequels?
The correct answer is "No."

Given how quiet they've been for the last few months I think Ezra Miller is either locked up in a bunker somewhere with no access to the internet or has finally wised up to the consequences of their actions.

Either way they've still got a trial for burglary coming up next year. So that'll put the no such thing as bad publicity axiom to the test.

Sure it does matter if there is a future for a series/movie. These upcoming movies would usually if successful lead to more movies. Shazam 3, Bluebeetle 2, Aquaman 3 etc. Now that we know that that isn't really a possiblity, why go see it in the theatres? Just wait for it to come to Hbo and watch it there whenever.

Its like a streaming series you were interested in and want to watch, but then you hear its been cancelled and theres no season 2, your motivation for watching it probably just went down, and its no big hurry, sometimes you'd just not watch it at all.
