Is this a standing thing at any event that he does now? Like for example, if a person paid the--significant--sum for a meet-and-greet with photos would Shatner's team always request they be masked? Even for a picture that costs something like 100 dollars?

At this point, I would end up, asking him about horses or something. Nothing at all to do with Star Trek. Maybe a little TJ Hooker. He never seems to talk about that show.
Yes, it's a standing set Shatner( and other Trek Actors, personalities)Visit. He visits the set a couple times a year.
It's a licensed museum in Ticonderoga New York.
The man's flight was late and he had very little sleep.
The masks were requested at the last minute to Protect Mr. Shatner.
I believe folks taking pictures with him DID NOT wear the masks. I have NO idea what the costs were. You and others can visit the set's web site for all the info you what/need.
What gets me is that the take away here( and to be fair in other social media outlets I have posted this experience on) by some is not, meeting Shatner, Doing an Actor's Workshop with him on the fights seen on the show, Talking to him about his life...but about Masks that were worn to protect a very tired 91 Year old man, who insisted on fulfilling his obligations to all the fans who paid-- the significant-- sum for a meet and greet...
You have to love social Media.

Some time -- 1990s or 2000s -- actor Dave Prowse made a personal appearance at a comic book store in Melbourne, Florida.
I took my young son to see the event. Due to my own interests, the boy had seen many of the Hammer horror films on home video.
Now, at the store, Prowse was forever answering questions about Darth Vader and signing photos of the same. But when my son got to talk to him he said "My Dad told me you were the scariest Frankenstein monster ever ... and he was right!"
Mr Prowse chuckled and said "Oh ... the Hammer films!"
I sheepishly waved from the distance and said "That's me. It's nice to meet you, sir!"
"Good to see you too" he said, signing an autograph.
Son still has it. A nice memory for both of us.
Always try to be a little offbeat in what you talk to a celebrity about is what I've learned. Ask them about some weird thing they did in the past and you might get a fun story out of the exchange!

Thanks for the info. I want to be quite clear that I am not attempting to make any kind of political comment in this case.
The reason that I am asking is that there is an upcoming tour where "The Wrath of Khan" will be showed with a live talk from Shatner and then, for an additional $100, a meet-and-greet with a photo ($200 if you also want the photo autographed). I was trying to find out if Shatner wants those around him to wear masks at these events also, out of curiosity, since the photos are being sold.
I was not trying to weigh in on whether Shatner can/should require masks at his events. I hope my questions did not detract from your getting to share what you obviously found to be a remarkable experience.
@Chris PikE I was at Shatner's previous (July 2022) visit to the Star Trek Tours place. Looks like you had the Captain's VIP tour like I did--ship tour with bridge talk. He did fight scene in Engineering like he did with you. He was also dating Ariana Grande's mother (Joan) at the time, and she was on the tour with us. He scanned her in sickbay with hilarious results. Amazing time!

Way back in the 20th Century, I went to see Gang of Four at the Bayou (a defunct joint in Georgetown DC). The dressing room was just behind to upper level bar. Standing there, any performer walked right by anyone standing at the bar. When GoF walked past, some guys joked with them about why they weren't wearing any belts. Everybody chuckled.
Back when most of these 60's TV stars were sill alive, I'd go to a ton of local cons. Bob Culp will remain my favorite because before I even got all the way to his table, he stood up, put out his hand and said "Hi, I'm Robert!"
After I told him how much I liked his work he thanked me and asked me about MY life!
The only other actors to do that were Larry Hagman and Del Monroe from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
Opens up a whole lot of conversation and brings you right to the same level. Then you realize they are just folks like you.

I wasn't really interested in autographs, so when I'd go through the line, I'd stick my hand out for a handshake. The actors would usually automatically reciprocate without even thinking. I remember Marina Sirtis and her minder looked a little wary, but then went along. It wasn't until a long time after I shook Doohan's hand that I learned he was missing a finger. I didn't notice anything unusual at the time.
I can't remember if it was the same Con (w/ Sirtis) where we stood in line to meet the lead actor in that War of the Worlds reboot. My wife and I were going out for pizza afterward, so when we got to him in line, I asked if he wanted to go with us. He smoothly and politely declined.

And @Chris PikE - I hope the commentary here and on social media didn't get you down. I for one loved your pictures and the story of your experience and the question of masks never once entered my mind.

I've met all the TOS regulars except Kelley, some multiple times. Most have been very gracious and kind with their time. One time we paid for a photo op with Shatner and Nimoy, which turned out pretty nice. But it was an assembly line (understandable given the number of people). We were behind them as they sat for about 4 seconds, and shuffled along by the staff. No interaction whatsoever.

Word. If you could have told me in the 1970s that someday there'd be an exact replica of the Enterprise sets that you could tour, and Shatner himself would entertain small groups there for a modest ticket price, "cool" doesn't even cover it. Had I believed you for some reason, I would have been climbing the walls.
Seriously! I mean, this is about as awesome as it gets. I'm so glad @Chris PikE was chosen by Bill to do it.
