My brother sent me this image, obviously it's just in fun. But with the long gaps and, who knows, maybe another hiatus or two before 2033, there could be 2-3 more new Doctors and those we know will be that much older.

Aside from "hoping DW is still around by 2033", what do you want?

I'm excited to see how they explain Daniel Craig and Eddie Redmayne's doctor's.

But can they leave out Rowan Atkinson, Richard Grant, Jim Broadbent and Hugh Grant? The real numbers' 8, 9, 10 & 11 to Joanna's #12

    Ahh, that old chestnut

With RTD running the show and Disney funding it, I don't think there will be any notable hiatuses!

I think we can still expect a gap year after every four years. In The Writer's Tale, RTD explains the 2009 break was planned back in 2006,* as he feels after every four years, a show should take a year off. Indeed, he even added that had he remained Doctor Who showrunner indefinitely, there would always be a gap year after every fourth season. So depending on how long RTD's next term is, we can expect at least one hiatus.

*Contrary to popular belief, the 2009 gap year didn't happen because of Tennant's Shakespeare thing, but rather Tennant sought out Shakespeare because he knew he wouldn't be doing as much Doctor Who that year.

I considered that, but the new element is the Disney funding. Will they be OK with a gap?

Obviously, I don't know. But usually a regular production schedule is preferred, particularly with more money on the line.

It seems likely we'll also have spinoffs, as that was something RTD seemed proud of, and Disney probably wants them too. So, I suppose it's possible that the main show could take a break and still have spinoffs running.

It'll be interesting seeing how this all shakes out!

I would expect when Disney and RTD made their deal, something like this would have been discussed. Besides, any potential "gap years" that happen on RTD's watch are more likely to be similar to 2009 in that we still get Doctor Who specials throughout the year rather than a whole year without new content like we got during Moffat and Chibnall's eras. And with the Disney funding, I can see them really leaning into the gap year specials, making them bigger in scope than the typical episodes, making them perhaps movie-like. There was already a bit of embellishment with the 2009 specials, location shooting in Dubai, bigger name guest stars. With Disney funding? No telling where they'd go.
Absolutely, and the spin-offs could begin in different years so that their fourth seasons would be staggered in different years and only one show would be on hiatus on any particular year. Although, I find it far more likely that RTD would only be a senior executive on any spin-offs with the day to day showrunning handled by someone else, like he did previously. On Torchwood, that was Chibnall, Gareth Roberts on SJA. In which case, those showrunners would have the final say on whether they wanted to do a gap year with their show. Certainly, SJA went for five years without a gap and would have gone six were it not for the unfortunate event that transpired during the fifth season.

And even when Doctor Who is on its gap year, in addition to the specials they'll be doing, they can also have the Doctor guest star in one of the spin-offs, thus adding more Doctor Who content in the gap year. Like when Tennant appeared on SJA during 2009 or Capaldi appearing on Class in 2016.

^ I pretty much agree with everything you say. My main point was in response to the OP who mentioned "long gaps." Even if there are gap years containing specials, that's not really a log gap. Particularly if there are spinoffs also going.

Hopefully our yearlong spans with no DW are a thing of the past, at least for a while.

I guess the other thing to consider is whether the plan is to air a new series every year? For various reasons both Moffat and Chibnall struggled to get a series out every single year, and we've seen other series that drop every two years, take Stranger Things. Covid had an impact but some shows had a big gap even before the pandemic.

Has RTD said anything about how many episodes we can expect and how often? Will we see a return to 13 episode seasons? It seems unlikely and I'd guess 8 to 10 would be the most we'd expect, and that's fine, better eight episodes every year than 13 every two!

Series 14 more than likely will be 8 episodes... but, accounted with the four specials, that's basically 12 episodes within a year. If you look at it that way.

4 Specials? So is it three Tennant specials, the one Ncuti for Christmas, then a full series, what March/April time?

Oh, I'd definitely be surprised if we got more than ten episodes a year, if that. Shorter seasons are en vogue these days, and indeed, the live action Star Wars and MCU shows on Disney+ don't even get ten episodes a season. The one exception is Andor, though that's more about accommodating that show's narrative structure. Also, Andor is meant to be a limited series that will end after its second season.

2033 is also Kong’s centenary…and the 65th anniversary of Planet Of The Apes.

I might film some footage with Attenborough now, playing Louis Leaky—-with Tennant as 10…and let the footage sit for awhile…and splice that in with whoever is the Doctor in 2033 for a cross-over.

You know there is going to be a new Kong movie in 2033…which is not far off…a perfect tie in opportunity—so get cracking BBC!

That or have Mr. Attenborough on one of the WALKING DEAD speaking quietly after following a zombie with a radio collar…

As I understand it, the whomovies are a sticking point in Whovian scholarship, as they have too many character and setting contradictions, never mind the repetition of earlier adventures. Someone suggested that maybe these were fictional adaptations of actual adventures. (This takes the attitude of the Baker Street Irregulars re the Sherlock Holmes stories as factual.)

Okay, here’s my idea for a 70th (or whatever) Anniversary Doctor Who special.

The current Doctor is drawn (the Tardis knows best) back in time to the year 1965. There, as it happens, a studio is filming a “Dr. Who” film based upon scattered information about some actual events of the previous year. The current Doctor meets the star, Peter Cushing.

(They’d need to cast somebody who looks like P.C. and can convincingly enact him. Wasn’t there somebody in a recent Star Wars film? Whatever.)

Of course, the “Daleks” on board are actual aliens, attempting to conquer Earth. However, with some timely help from the wise Mr. Cushing utilizing his acting skills, the real Doctor pulls a trick that forces the real Daleks to go home.

As she (or he) prepares to depart the scene/time, The Doctor thanks Cushing for his invaluable help. He gets to make a speech something like John Hurt’s farewell in Day of the Doctor, something like. “No, I thank you. It appears that for just one day, ‘Dr. Who’ was truly ‘The Doctor.’ Now, if you’ll excuse me, we have a movie to make.”

The problem here is there's a whole extra set of legalities in place which prevents the modern series from referencing the Cushing movies, as proven when Moffat had to excise the reference to them from Day of the Doctor at the last minute.
That was a digital deep fake of Peter Cushing.

Ah! So even referring to the movies as quasi-canonical "historical fiction" works would be out of line. Too bad.
I thought they did use an actor who resembled Cushing in an earlier Star Wars effort, but I may be mistaken.

Oh, you're probably thinking of Wayne Pygram in Revenge of the Sith. Calling that a "performance" is probably being generous though, he literally just stood there for ten seconds or so. It's only because of the credits we know that was even supposed to be Tarkin.
