All things RED Dwarf

I'd love to go, but it's like 4000 miles as the swallow flies.

I didn’t go but was speaking to a friend in the pub yesterday afternoon who is an engineer at the venue and he was doing the lighting last night. He said if I went I could join him in the lighting box above the stage so thinking I missed out on potentially a great night. He would have probably let me press a few buttons to control the lighting. Kicking myself for not going.

I love Lister's rant about going into a wine bar.

"Next thing you know I'm playing squash every Thursday evening with a bloke called Gerald!"
LISTER: Kryten, there was a cartoon character once called Popeye, said a really profound thing.
KRYTEN: Well, what did he say?
LISTER: He said, "I am what I am."
KRYTEN: Are you sure? I always thought it was Descartes!
LISTER: So did I, man! It's so easy to get those two dudes mixed up!

Sometimes I wonder if Holly really does have an iq of 6000 and he is just messing with Dave……….Nahh, that’s crazy talk isn’t it?

I wish I still had a Red Dwarf book which describes the crew boarding the ship and one memory I have of the book is how serious Holly is. In the episodes with flashbacks pre-disaster like The End Holly makes announcements while probably doing a few million other tasks so I don’t doubt Holly had an IQ of 6000 before he spent three million years with no crew to give him anything to do. I love how Holly was a
Supercomputer at one point but has degraded and Norman Lovett is the best casting ever. He still runs the ship so I’m sure his IQ is more than 6 but he’s learnt to act daft so he doesn’t have to do much work and can work on hobbies or have a nap. He’s got to offline.

One might think that a computer with an IQ that high would be able to create some kind of stimulus to keep it active for all those years it spent alone.

I mean, surely Holly has complete records of every member of the crew, including all of their knowledge and personalities. While he couldn't literally resurrect them, surely Holly should have been able to generate 'virtual' crew that he could interact with? It'd all be some kind of virtual space, inside his mind, but it would still keep him busy so he's not sitting around for 3 million years with nothing to do.

Or, failing that, couldn't Holly have just shut himself down until such time as another life form (regardless of species) came aboard the ship? If there's no one else on board, there's no need for Holly to be awake...

Maybe it was a corporate directive that the ships computer must remain online at all times so Holly couldn’t shut down and wasn’t permitted to use holograms as that would use non essential resources while there was a human lifeform in stasis. Like he says to Lister he’s ‘gone a bit perculiar’ after being alone for so long and was probably bound by company protocol to carry out basic tasks and keep the ship running on minimal power until a human crew member could issue new orders. Holly doesn’t return to Earth even after the drive plate incident which suggests he was powerful and could run a ship the size of a
city but still needed a crew member to tell him to stop travelling away from Earth as he was unable to make that decision as it’s not in his program.

And see, Holly does have some downtime, at least when he's jiggered.

I was quoting that scene with the offline quote. Got to offline. Got to take the odd breather….

Lister has helped Holly chill out.

Having consumed the psychedelic repast, he went on to attack two senior officers; believing them to be giraffes who were armed and dangerous
