Missed a Trick

I'm still yet to see SNW, not got round to my free Paramount+ trial yet (the way things are going I cannot afford another whole new streaming service), and like most things I've purposefully been trying not to read reviews or spoilers though from what I have gleamed I suspect that SNW might appeal more than the other modern live action shows did.

So all that aside, one thought that did pop randomly into my head, that would've made me chuckle and been a nice little tongue-in-cheek thing for the SNW PTB to do would've been to cast a pair of twins on the show, one given dark hair for Number One and another given blonde hair to play Chapel, but no one on the show says a thing about the similarities between the two. All part of a little nod to Majel Roddenberry.

I know, crazy idea that probably everyone is going to hate, but just thought I'd get it out there.

I haven't seen it either and I was trying to think whether I would do anything tongue in cheek, like have Number One and Chapel in sickbay talking to the computer or something. Or something like Danny Glover and Mel Gibson in "Maverick" recognising each other for a split second. But I think I prefer the way they went.

I think the actresses have leaned hard into the character differences. Maybe they might do a tongue in cheek body swap episode, although they might have to keep Spock on the periphery due to his involvement in Turnabout Intruder. Also, if Chapel could remember any of it, she would have taken Lester-Kirk more seriously.

Number One and Chapel could both speak to the ships computer at the same time, the response would be both of their voices ‘computerized’. They would look at each other in shock at first as the computer responded, but then they mimic the computer in the same mechanical voice and giggle together. :D

Maybe SNL could do a spoof episode featuring twins if Mount or Peck did an episode.

IDK how funny or good SNL is anymore, but it sounds like something they would do.

Gee. I looked at the thread title, and thought it was about a prostitute who was lonesome for a specific regular customer. Or a bridge player who failed to notice he had high card.

Seriously, I'd even be up for an episode giving an in-universe reason for their resemblance. Assuming there is any in the SNW cast (which I'm not, given that I'm still waiting for the first season DVD set, and trying to avoid spoilers).

I just now got a theory for their resemblance, but I don't want to spoil anything if you still haven't seen it.

Maybe Una's Augment colony has stock samples of DNA from "real" people to engineer their offspring--not as full clones, but mix-and-matching genes. Chappel or one of her relatives was somehow a donor. Una didn't receive her hair gene, or anything that might affect personality, but got the eyes, voice and facial structure.
This of course is a bit irrelevant, now that Chappel and Number One are no longer the same actress.

I haven't seen any of SNW either, nor Picard (which doesn't really interest me), nor Prodigy or Lower Decks, or even Discovery beyond Season 2.
Majorly pissed off that the present Star Trek world is played out behind pay channels and streaming services.

I see where you're coming from. They way I try to think about it is this:
  1. I can safely ignore things like Prodigy and Lower Decks. It costs me nothing to ignore them.
  2. In theory, streaming services and the modern model of production (e.g., planning out a season in advance rather than being dependent of what random scripts come it) at least CAN result in a better product. Mind you, they're mostly not taking advantage of the possibilities here, but the possibilities are open to them, and theyplay out better in Strange New Worlds than the others.
  3. In my perfect world, most of the garbage scripts could end up in one product. I have lucked out, and hence we have Picard. As with Prodigy and Lower Decks, I can ignore Picard, and it doesn't cost me anything.
So, there's more Trek than at any point in history, but there's only one that's so far worth my continued attention. I'm OK with that. I'm willing to pay P+ to watch it, and I also get the Twilight Zone and other entertaining things in the bargain. I do have a monthly payment, but I also don't have commercials, and that has value as well. And I can quit paying whenever I wish, unlike cable and satellite services, which require a subscription.

Good post @ChallengerHK
I'm not totally averse to P+ etc
I simply can't afford them
I watched Discovery on Netflix, but it wasn't my account, and since moving to Spain I've fell behind to the point of, yes, "I can ignore that" now
"Strange New Worlds" interested me, but as I said, money is the issue.
My son is an actor, for me to watch his last three major TV roles would mean me paying for a VPN to watch Sky Plus from the UK and Apple TV, also needing a VPN I presume.

My sense re: costs is this: None of the services are particularly onerous. They're all around $10 a month. And, you can get a service for a month, binge a season of something you want to see, and cancel it at the end of the month.

What I think is more the problem for most is the cost of internet to facilitate the streaming. I have T Mobile whole home internet, which gives me true unlimited service. It's $50 a month, which is higher than I'd like, but cheaper than other services. I make sacrifices in other areas to cover that, because for my family it has several different types of value.

Yeah, I'm already on 50 euros a month for a basic TV and internet package, at this time buying streaming services and VPNs isn't priority

Well there's a LDS crossover coming in SNW Season 2, sooo
Two possibilities. 1) They'll use that opportunity to make SNW a silly show, which will be my signal to quit watching. 2) The crossover will involve characters namechecked in the background, and I can continue to safely ignore LDS.

it's literal crossover. Mariner and Boimler are coming to live action, and it sounds like we'll see an animated Pike.

IIRC Tawny Newsome did say the characters won't be as bombastic as they are in the cartoon when they're in live action.

to make SNW a silly show,
It already is.

They all come out on DVD/Blu-Ray, at least they have to date, that's how I consume them.
