Who are these people?

This posed photo appears to be a group of extras from ST II-VI. Are they fans? The gentleman standing second from left looks a bit older than most enlisted personnel.

Hi mb22. These people appear to be extras from ST II - I think the tall guy in the back row is Steve Blalock as seen here. The blond guy behind him is the cadet Lt.j.g. navigator. I recognise the black guy at the back left, and the young woman in the front middle, but can't find them on Memory Alpha at the mo (finding unknown crew people on MA is really difficult! :brickwall: Unless it's just me?)

Edit: Found some of them under 'unnamed Academy personnel', and the guy in the front second right is Philip Weyland (I think?) :)

Thanks! Yes, I also saw a few of them in Memory Alpha as well, but wasn't 100% sure. I never saw this photo until now, though. If they had been in a Star Wars movie, all their characters would have been given names and backstories by now

The older guy is Joel Marston who was a buddy of Shatner and worked on the first 4 movies. He had a line of dialogue in TWOK but it was either cut or was used as a voice-over while speaking off-screen.

The turbo doors whoosh open as Kirk reaches them.
Scotty stands there, tears streaming down his face;
he holds the body of Midshipman Preston. Both of them
are covered in blood. He sways into Kirk's arms as
the others rush forward.

103 EXT. SPACE 103

The Enterprise, motionless, scars of battle showing.

104 INT. ENGINE ROOM 104

The CREW, wearing respirators amid the motionless ball
of gas, work frantically at a dozen jobs, trying to put
things aright, splicing wires, etc. Some TRAINEES who
panicked are back.

105 FEATURE THE CREW CHIEF 105

making a final adjustment.

CREW CHIEF
Hit your blowers!

A TURBO WHINES and a great wind of suction pulls the
gas towards appropriate vents. The Crew Chief watches,
then yanks off his respirator; wipes his brow.

106 INT. SICK BAY 106

MANY CASUALTIES IN EVIDENCE. Kirk enters and LEADS
CAMERA THROUGH them; he has a word or two for men he
doesn't know by name. Kirk leads us to the operating
theatre, where Bones works over Preston. Scotty stands
by, his lips trembling. Preston opens his eyes, sees
Scotty and Kirk.

PRESTON
(faint)
Is the word given?

I always found it strange that there was an unwritten policy to have twice as many men as women that carried through until Discovery.

I think either the original writers guide or the Whitfield/ Roddenberry The Making of Star Trek book, mentions that the 1701's crew was one-third female, so I guess they just kept to that.

That's right, it was mentioned expressly in TOS (was it in Charlie X?) but abandoned for TMP when they were trying to leave sexism behind. They seemed to drift back into it in subsequent movies and shows even though officially they should have been equal.

Yeah, they mentioned the same ratio for the NX-01, which I guess we can say tracks for being Starfleet’s ratio through TOS at least. I don’t think they ever said what the 1701-D or Voyager was (even though the cast was still predominantly male).

Strangely enough, membership of the "Star Trek - The Motion Picture Appreciation Society" Facebook Group is about 98% male, which always amazes me, as the breakdown at most Trek conventions I have been to is about 50:50.

Interesting. I wonder why? I googled fb demos. Statista.com provided this:

“As of September 2022, 23.6 percent of Facebook users in the United States were aged between 25 and 34 years, making up Facebook’s largest audience in the country. Overall, 18.2 percent of users belonged to the 18 to 24-year age group, followed closely by users aged 35 to 44 years, with 18.1 percent. Facebook’s smallest audience can be found amongst teen users, as just one in every twenty users were aged 13 to 17 years. Additionally, women were slightly more likely to use the platform than men, accounting for 54 percent of the platform’s users base in the U.S.”

So if fb tends a wee bit more female then a predominately male group is… unexpected

Indeed. I pose the question every so often to the group. No one has successfully cracked that particular conundrum. Nor do many of their female friends join up.

I was very surprised to see so many women at conventions. Maybe they just prefer socialising to naval gazing? We are a bit like the Ents unable to understand where all the Ent wives have gone.

Do the non-coms have rank on their cuffs? I know Rand was billed as Commander Rand in STIV but i wonder if she had a non-com rank on her uniform?
