Playmates Toys

it looks like at least for now, some stores are only getting a single case of the figures, ships and phaser. Did my weekly shopping yesterday at the Target where I first found them a few weeks ago and all they had left was a lone Picard in a damaged box. No ship or phaser.
Haven't seen them at my Targets...no surprise there. I didn't get many of the Star Wars exclusives either.

New figures from Topps Mego, Playmates and ReAction/Super 7
by Ian McLean, on Flickr

Long, story with happy ending!

I feel vindicated! Last year, when the Topps' Mego 8" exclusive figures were being promoted, I panicked. It was going to be very difficult to order from Australia, especially when USPS had put Australia on a parcel ban list due to the pandemic! Of the six, I really wanted the Kor, the Quark and the Borg Queen. I decided I could lived without an additional Spock (even though it was a TMP Spock!), and the Sisko and Worf were not all that special.

I found a reseller taking pre-orders on eBay and ordered the Kor for the most reasonable price/postage. When the next pair was offered, I found a different reseller for the Quark. Again, quite reasonable price/postage. Then it turned out that the same reseller was the one listing the Borg Queen. (Even though she was a bit underwhelming, I did rather like the sheen of her skin, a good representation of her oily look in "First Contact".)

When the Topps' figures were delayed and delayed and delayed, I would sent the odd message to the resellers, then I worried when the three-month window for cancelling the Kor accidentally passed me by. Ooops. I was fairly reassured that the reseller was genuine, and he sent me jovial replies a few times. Had I cancelled Kor at that three-month mark, and received my refund, I lessened my chances of ever getting the figure.

The reseller of Quark and the Borg Queen ignored me every time. That was worrying! Ultimately, the three-month refund window passed for each of those, too. The Kor guy did thank me for the regular updates and, when the Topps figures started turning up for other collectors, I figured I was safe. Then the link for the Kor purchase stopped functioning, but the reseller still responded to my message replies to previous messages. Ultimately, he (and the Kor) vanished from eBay altogether. I found another Kor from a different seller and he arrived safely a few weeks ago.

eBay does not permit the sending of personal details in messages to a seller, so I realised I had only one legal way to flag the person. I found the cheapest cool item they were selling in their eBay shop and I embedded my enquiry on that, telling her I intend to buy the 3D collector card of Admiral Ackbar if only I could convey my dilemma of the lost Megos. A reply came back! She had realised she had no other way to find me either. After the three months was up, she probably did have a way to refund all of her preorders but, after that time elapses, supposedly the sellers also lose the means to communicate directly?

Anyway, I took a further risk. I bought the 3D card and she agreed that she could help me out with the previous lost orders - and the box arrived a few days ago: a 3D card, Quark and the Borg Queen, all intact! (I did overpay the postage, of course, but I did finally get my three Topps figures.) Whew!

Lots of other goodies turned up this week, thanks also to my US penpal, who has been receiving all my US eBay purchases, on my behalf, during the annoying USPS ban on parcels to my country! That box was M.I.A. for over a month, but yay! Lots of ReAction TNG, FanSets pins and insignia - and three of the new Playmates figures.

Picked up my first two figures from the new Playmates range - Saru and Data.

Firstly, to confirm, here in the UK we are receiving ALL the figures in the blue "Universe" packaging, so we're not getting the 'retro' cards. And I am quite happy with that, I think the Universe cards look better (though I am an opener so I don't feel too strongly either way!)

Secondly - these are great figures! Good poseability, display well, decent enough sculpts, and an RRP (£12.99 from Amazon UK) that is - certainly in the current market - excellent value for money. Compare to (e.g.) Masters of the Universe Origins (RRP of £17.99), or Star Wars Black Series (RRP of £23.99). Perhaps I'm a simple soul, but good value, decent enough likeness, and looks good on display - these are sort of my top three criteria. And these new Playmates figures hit them.

I am just hoping the line lasts and goes from strength to strength - I will be a happy little collector if we can round off the main casts from each series (wish they'd started with TOS uniforms instead of TWOK; more iconic IMO) and a few iconic guest stars/aliens - a Borg, Gorn, Cardassian etc.

Agreed! Got my first few figures through - Burnham, Saru, Riker and Data. Picard and Khan are on the way.

First impressions are really good! The face sculpts are actually very nice - Data looks a lot better in-hand than in the photos. Burnham and Saru are excellent. Riker is a bit less good, it’s a bit too ‘generic man with beard’, though I wonder if better paint apps would bring out the detail of the sculpt?

But at this price point I can’t complain, the likenesses do the job and the articulation and proportions are great. Scale-wise they are very close to the original line, but because they have a lot more realistic proportions they don’t look quite right next to the more heavily caricatured 90s figs.

The comparison that comes to mind is Thunderbirds puppets compared with Captain Scarlet. UK people will probably understand that!

The TNG guys look great on the bridge playset. I hope we get the other four main characters at least.

What are the chances of this line expanding?. I’m pretty keen for the main TNG figures. But would hate to be just stuck with Picard, Riker and Data.

I think we'll get another wave next year, plus the Prodigy line. Might be more likely to get a handful of characters from other series rather than finishing off the crews.

But who knows? If they don't sell we won't get anything else.

The Prodigy crew would be really cool. I really hope that the new figures fit with Mattel's Jurassic World lines, size-wise.

Jurassic World so far has been 3.75, while these have been 4.75-5 inch.

Yup. The key is how many they sell.

I mentioned it up thread, but I’m getting much more of a “greatest hits” vibe from the non-Prodigy bit of this line. That they’ve released the original Enterprise/phaser leads me to believe that we’re probably getting our umpteenth version of some TOS characters in the next wave, probably with some other Paramount+ series figures.

There is just so many ways to go. It depends on how well the figures sell and how deep they are willing to go.

personally, I would like to see them knock out characters from the other series before we start filling out the crews in full. So for 2023 gimme figures from DS9, Voyager and either Enterprise, SNW or Lower Decks before we get more TOS, TNG and Disco.

Hmmm they’ve become available in Australia so maybe I just should just bite the bullet and go in to support the line. Between this and EXO-6, I’m grateful I don’t have too many other hobbies :/

The new Khan is great! Probably the best of the whole line. Great face sculpt and the costume detail is lovely. The two Disco guys are very good too.

The TNG boys are growing on me. Picard is a good likeness but Riker and Data are a little generic.

finally picked up Picard on my lunch break and I do think it’s missing some paint apps. His face looks too pale/washed out. But still not as bad as some of the pictures would lead you to believe.

Well, it's happened. I have now purchased all 8 figures. Burnham twice! (The first one had a defective arm that only bent backwards) My arc from "glad they're making these again, of course I would never buy one" to having them all posed with accessories on a shelf is complete.

You've got me, Playmates. I stand ready to purchase anything and everything you produce.

I am so ignorant of the business side of action figure production. How long does it take till we know whether the line has sold well enough to merit extension?

I found my playmates figures last night. The entire Enterpise-D crew is intact, save for Troi who I must lost somehow. I'm happy that I didn't lose Kirk, Scotty, Older McCoy, Q, Guinan, Sela, Hugh,Quark, Locutus, and Spock.

I guess if we don't get an announcement of a second wave by the spring, it won't be good news.
