This really rubbed me the wrong way. I assured him we'd had electricity and running water for awhile now - it's a similar snooty attitude to how some Americans perceive Canada.

I know the feeling. I've encountered similar attitudes. Not only is it snooty, it comes across as aggressive and patronizing, and then they're always surprised when we get defensive. This is why we get defensive over diminutive 'jokes' such as 'America's Hat', because it feeds into the psyche that we're somehow supposed to be subservient, and it really isn't funny, but tired and trite.

My response to "America's Hat" is that "And Alaska makes a really cute pompom on top."

And then I sometimes have to explain the concept of a toque...

For instance, you should have seen the wailing from some American fans of "The Handmaid's Tale" when one of the characters escaped to Canada with another Handmaid's baby. The general consensus was "How will she feed that baby - do they even HAVE baby formula in Canada? That baby's gonna DIE!!!!!"

I'm sorry, but... WHAT?!?

(I've been upfront there about where I'm from, though I wasn't stupid enough to meekly comply with the "real names" policy they put in several years ago - some of my views are definitely NOT in keeping with the majority here and I don't need the potential harassment)

I don't agree with the whole "real names only" thing, just on principle. (I mean, I don't actually have an account on the CBC site, but I also strongly believe in online privacy.) But it does seem there are a lot of people who feel the way you do: it's always fun when you're scrolling through and you come across a name from a fictional show/movie/book that you enjoy! :) I've even seen a few Star Trek ones over the years. I don't recall them all (never bothered to write them down or anything), but I do specifically remember seeing an "Elim Garak" crop up from time to time! :D

I kid you not. There are some very weird people posting in the comment sections of the YT review channels for this show.

There are some weird people hosting the review channels as well. One woman (a white woman) went ballistic over a line in which Luke (June's husband, who's black) had a conversation with Commander Waterford (who's white), telling him that they had a lot in common (Luke was referring to their relative ages, education, and various things) and the host nearly had the vapors as she carried on that "Doesn't Luke realize he's BLACK?!"

Well, I guess he might have noticed it once or twice if he looked in the mirror while shaving, or if anyone mentioned to him that he was a black man with a white wife (Luke in the original novel was not black). I mean, Luke isn't the brightest bulb in the cast of characters, but he isn't that dumb. I'm sure he knows he's black.

I actually prefer the review channels hosted by men, because they don't dwell so much on the soapish elements and they don't have these irritating, screechy voices. It's a shame that Smirking Gun Reviews isn't doing them this season. Rob is a cool guy who once thanked me for explaining a few things he hadn't understood about the Canada storyline. There's so much of that that's just plain off-kilter that Americans don't pick up on.

Yeah, Deanna Troi is scampering around that site, posting right-wing, sexist BS, and Prime Minister Borden seems to have risen from the grave to post there. A lot of Archie comics characters post there, too.

I remember having a conversation or two with the CBC version of Elim Garak. I don't remember the topic, though.

As for me... my username looks like what you'd get if someone from Ireland married someone from India. And that's not so farfetched in Canada, right? The only thing is that I've been told to go back where I came from, and some people can't spell; I'm using a feminine first name but some idiots just assume I can't spell and still refer to me as "he/him". The book I took this name from is one I got in my goody-bag at a science fiction convention nearly 40 years ago, and neither it nor the author are particularly well-known. I loved the book, though, and have re-read it many times. I'm guessing that the con organizers must have approached the local bookstores for contributions, and the Sentry Box cleared out some old stock that wasn't selling. I got lucky.

And I'm still trying to explain multiculturalism to that idiot on the CivFanatics forum. He's trying to tell me that Sir John A.'s purpose for the residential schools was "noble." :brickwall:

Oh, joy, so now we're going to get to pay extra fees for the "honour" of using a credit card...

https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/can...rge-credit-card-fees-starting-oct-6-1.6096370

I know the article says they don't think many business will do it, but I would assume that's just to start. Businesses are required to maximize their profits (publicly traded ones, anyway), so if they can pass this expense on to the consumer, why wouldn't they? It'll start with just a handful of smaller retailers, and then one large one will take the plunge due to financial constraints or a downturn in the economy, or whatever, and then it'll become normalized, and everybody else will jump on board.

First read about this coming up in the toronto star last week.

One of the respondents to the article point out about how telus has been introducing it and think it was really was an utterly bastard act. Phone companies what you to use self service options to look after your account and that includes making use of credit cards.

Guess we're fortunate with our finances that if push comes to shove I can use the debit card just as easily as the credit card if some-one tries to hit me with a surcharge - I just use the credit card to collect the points (and they're geting stingy with those - $2 to get one point unless you're buying food).

Ugh. Danielle Smith won. Now we have to look at her alternately smirking, snarling visage and upraised claws for at least 8 months. Hopefully by that time the rest of the party will realize what a monumentally stupid set of ideas she has and kick her out. Or the voters will realize it and kick the whole UCP out.

One can hope.

Think I will make a return to the Stampede next year.

It’s been even longer since I last did it (‘17) vs. the Oktoberfest (‘18)…and as long as I’m coming back to Canada, I might as well go all in!

unfortunately the plans to replace the Saddledome seem to have died :( but, hey, I’ll take what I can get. :)

When you get there, face north and wave at me. I'm in Red Deer.

And while you're there, if you're into science fiction or fantasy books, RPG, or strategy games, I highly recommend a visit to The Sentry Box (best book/game store I've ever been to).

And just like that, the Blue Jays are eliminated.

I am not a sports fan by any stretch of the imagination, so of course I don't follow any sports. (I didn't even know the Jays had made the playoffs until the news articles started cropping up in the headlines! ) But my mother is a huge Jays fan, and I was hoping a long playoff run would give her something to be focused on other than her recent health issues. No such luck, I guess.

the blue jays bullpen has been an issue for years.

Somehow even when managers have been fired Pete walker, the pitching coach has kept his job.

I've heard talk that the Jays want to demolish the skydome and build a new stadium. Any truth to this?

I hope not...I actually like the place, and I definitely like the attached Marriott!

I haven't heard, but then I don't follow sports or Toronto news closely enough. If so, that'd make it the 3rd stadium. I'm old enough to have been to the first, and went to the Skydome the first two years of its existence.

One of the discussed ideas for replacing the Dome is building around it and then knocking it down, which I don't know how you do on such a small, landlocked area.

Frankly, I'd like to choose a location like the Giants have on the waterfront, but that can also be like the Astros stadium with a lot of open glass to let natural light in inclement weather.
