Season 5 Teaser Trailer

Crikey, was someone on this show a fan of "Impulse"? You got Shaun Doyle, Tara Rosling and now Callum Keith Rennie as actors. (It's just that it's filmed in Canadia probably but it's cool they're all getting gigs)

Or just a change of pace. Which is what Star Trek does best.

I like variety, but I tend to like it between episodes or between shows, not between seasons.

Whatever you think of Discovery, you can't deny that the network has shown a basic lack of confidence in the show far beyond any other Trek show, as the level of tinkering from season to season with the basic formula is way, way beyond anything else we've seen.

While I thought Seasons 3/4 were more consistent and slightly stronger than Seasons 1/2, ultimately I wish they had the confidence to build a better thought-out version of what they set out to do back then rather than trying to chase the median Trekkie demographic.

I'm not seeing any difference between Season 5 and Seasons 3-4 other than a different story. This trailer gave us the least information to work with. I like Season 4. It's my favorite season of DSC. That doesn't mean I want another story just like it.

Frankly, I think Picard has changed more in three seasons than Discovery did in five, and I say that as a fan of both shows. PIC went from "Serious sci-fi drama that's not TNG" to "We're going to do our own version of Back to the Future!" to "The Hell with it, this is TNG after all! Here's the final movie you never got!" It went from "No one's in Starfleet!" to "Some of us are in Starfleet!" to "Let's bring Starfleet back out in full force!"

That's fair. I treat each season as an episode so I have left concern with it. TOS can mix it up so doing it in Discovery is not bothersome to me.

The median Trekkie demographic hasn't not given them any reason to be confident.

I think they know they're not going to get the "STD sucks!" demographic. Ironically, I think who they're really trying to win over are people in the middle like you. In political terms, they see you as a "swing voter".

To be clear, I'm not saying Season 5 will be different, I'm just saying the trailer appears to be trying to market Season 5 as very different from what Season 4 ultimately ended up being.

I don't think the "resets" in Picard come close to the jump from the 23rd to the 32nd century in Discovery, but to be fair we have now lost essentially all of the original characters other than Jean Luc, Raffi, and Seven (the latter of whom wasn't even a regular cast member in the first season) so I suppose it's a matter of perspective.

Ultimately I'm just sick of serialized series which wing it from season to season and lack long-term consequence. I prefer either episodic or a long-form story arc which takes place across the entirety of the show - though I admit the latter is hard to do if you're not relying upon something like an established series of books. Still, the artificiality of these big season arcs which don't ever have any impact in the following years is really starting to wear me down. Is it really that hard to do what DS9 did and actually have choices from the earlier seasons have repercussions which are felt many seasons later?

Probably just a result of filming in Canada. Throughout the 90s and 2000s, just count up how many actors end up in The X Files, Stargate and BSG.

The premise of the season seems a lot like Raiders of the Lost Ark. I'll watch because I'm a Star Trek completist, but I'm least interested in this than any other new Trek.

Yep, sounds to me like Star Trek mixed with Blood & Treasure. As long as the treasure isn't a threat to all life in the quadrant/galaxy/universe, I have no problems with this.

I keep thinking back to the Tantalus Colony in "Dagger of the Mind" and Kirk constantly telling Bones, "The Penal Colonies, they're like resorts! I've been to them!" He says this a few times. Really driving that point home, Captain... Something about your past we don't know about?

So, yeah. Saul Goodman would be out of business.
