Playmates Toys

I remember when Troi came out and I got one at the store, one of the stock boys tipped off my Dad that they were rare so we got a second one to keep in the box. It's... somewhere? I haven't actually ever tried looking for it, but there are only so many places in my folks' house that it could be.

Yeah, we only ever found one. Then wave 2 came out and S2 Troi’s were plentiful. It was the Season 1 Worf that was tough to find.

Not too long ago I was at my local HPB and they had a whole shelf of Star Trek figures unopened in their original packaging, including both sets of Troi's, and a Captain Pike. All reasonably priced. It was the same at another location. I wonder if they got their hands on old warehouse inventory and were unloading it.

Didn't they do another run of those wave 1 Trois? They don't seem to be remotely rare these days.

I think it’s just like a lot of other things, 25-30 years after those came out people just did sell or are selling off the extras they bought when the first came out.

there are only a handful of the old line that are tough to find now a days via eBay, Amazon or thrift shops. Like the original limited to 1701 figures, the Trials and Tribbleations O’Brien, the Target TNG crew in the FC unis and anything 7 of 9.

Strangely those movie TNG figures are pretty easy to find in the UK because they were pretty widely available. And obviously we got the Crusher figure too. I have a bunch of Picards for customisation purposes. The rare/harder to find figures here are the DS9 line, which I think was import only.

Some of the ships are very rare too - Voyager, Defiant and the Insurrection version of the Enterprise-E. And the Deep Space Nine toy was never released here too as far as I know.

yeah, I forgot you all got the extra one we didn’t. I remember seeing those at Target but I had phased out of buying/collecting the Trek line so I passed.

aside from the 1701 stuff the only ones I never remember seeing were those TOS episode specific 2-packs. Kirk and Balock, Kirk and Spock from Amok Time and Interphasing Kirk and Spock from the Tholian Web.

Yeah, I've noticed that most collectibles seem to follow a bell curve with regard to availability/prices, with time enough folks lose interest and then flood the market with stuff that no one really wants anymore.

I tried to Google it up and couldn't find it, but I remember there was a page with a comprehensive record of the TOS phaser props paint jobs, beyond the major difference between the black/white and the gray/black color schemes. I think there were enough variations that there could well be blue-gray and beige-gray versions done at some point during the show.

This new one could be described as a "storm cloud gray."
For the show, the 'hero prop' phasers and the background props were not all the same color. There were at least four or five different color schemas/combos. There were even the ones with black body and white handle. I don't know if anyone has come up with a detailed analysis of all of them, but I'm sure Playmates' new version is 'close enough' to something that appeared on screen at some point.

Does anyone know the new playmates phaser is the wrong colour?

Yes. Its a "retro" version of Playmates' 1994 Phaser, which was also incorrect compared to the actual screen-used props.

What I find strange is when it comes to prop replicas, usually the aim is for each generation of toy to come closer to screen prop accuracy as possible (e.g., Master Replicas or the WAND company), yet this new Playmates Phaser is a re-pop (for the most part) of the '94 version. I did not realize there was so much nostalgia for that very inaccurate toy.

None of Playmates' roleplay toys stood up to scrutiny when it came to screen accuracy. But they were sturdy and durable toys that could be handled by smaller and clumsier hands (Ages 4 and up according to the box), and you could bang them around without hurting them too much. The aim with these new Playmates toys is to convey the same 'spirit' as the original line. Later phasers, even ostensibly a toy such as Art Asylum/Diamond Select, have leaned toward the collector market or perhaps use in affordable cosplay, being more fragile and really more for display and less exuberant handling.

it looks like at least for now, some stores are only getting a single case of the figures, ships and phaser. Did my weekly shopping yesterday at the Target where I first found them a few weeks ago and all they had left was a lone Picard in a damaged box. No ship or phaser.
