Will Sam Beckett Return Home? NBC Orders Quantum Leap Reboot Pilot

Aside from bringing Sam home (which seems unlikely due to real world events, but you never know), what other aspects of QL mythology could this series go deeper into?

I want to see how the constant changes in the past affect the present. I want followup on what a Leapee experiences post-leap, although it sounds like we'll be getting that through Magic in episode 4. I also hope Ziggy gets her voice and personality back instead of just being a bunch of boxes along the wall. I'd like to see more of how Ziggy operates during a Leap, though maybe I don't want the mystery spoiled too much.

Really, though, I don't want the "mythology" to dominate. I think we're due for a return to more episodic TV storytelling. QL didn't work because of its mythology, which was vague and inconsistent at best. It worked because of the character-driven anthology-style storytelling that the rest was simply an excuse for.

Not that I remember. And he only did one leap to somewhere before the day of his birth, to the Civil War.

Which was the "closest" leap in time Sam ever did? Has he ever gone beyond the 80s?

The wiki has an episode list with locations and dates: https://quantumleap.fandom.com/wiki/Episode_List

The latest leap was "Revenge of the Evil Leaper," September 16, 1987. In all, nine episodes involved leaps to the 1980s, four of them in 1985 for some reason. (Good year for time travelers, I guess. Great Scott!)

Future Guy was behind the leaps. First he messes with Captain Archer's ancestor in Scott Beckett then he started messing with Captain Archer.

Just managed to watch the pilot yesterday - solid start if nothing too groundbreaking,

I really liked it how they connected it to the original show and how they created a greater mystery as a story arc for however long that mystery lasts. The original show was mostly standalone episodes which was fine for its day but shows have changed much since then and it's good that this new one is expanding.

Did anyone wait for an "Oh Boy!" during the entire episode too?

I really hope they somehow manage to include Dr. Sam Beckett / Scott Bakula into the show even if he publicly said he's not involved, maybe in the season finale or season 2 if they make it that far ( but only in a limited capacity, i don't want him taking over the show).

I'll be definitely watching more episodes to see how it develops.

The second ep was an improvement over the first, but I still find this 50/50 approach really short-changes the Leap drama. Nice "cameo" tie-in to the original QL pilot Genesis, though!
Astronaut Samantha Stratton is only alive thanks to Sam.

And he only did one leap to somewhere before the day of his birth, to the Civil War.
He actually Leapt before his birth three times. The Civil War one, and then two which took place while he was still in utero.

"Leapt" is a word, but it sounded like Ben said "Lept" which is not a word, but it could have been his accent or my ears.

Space shuttle episode was somewhat by the numbers, but I am enjoying this show's cast, which salvaged the episode a bit.

Oof. Someone needs to send that opening narration back for a few more drafts. Really clunky with the multiple forced dramatic pauses, and nowhere near the flare of the original's. Admittedly it took the original a few seasons to boil down into a definitive version (and still ended up being 4 times longer that what we got here), but still . . .

Indeed the dialogue in general appears to still be this show's Achilles heel. I know the show needs to exposition dump very quickly, but that's what the hologram character is supposed to be for, and Astronauts really do not talk like this.

(incidentally, has there been any fan consensus for referring to old and new shows? "QLeap" and "NuLeap" for example?)
Leapt rhymes with kept.
Leaped rhymes with heaped.
(Again, so far as where I live. Can't speak for other countries, but if I recall correctly, you're a fellow AUS/NZ resident.)
And here comes the Pom to break the tie; yeah it's "Leapt" which sounds like "kept". "Leaped" which sounds like "heaped" is also correct, but I almost never hear it, and thus it often just sounds wrong.

An okay episode, though it concerns me that this seems to be more of an action-oriented show than the original. Most of the character work centered around the leads, and even the character drama for the guest stars was tailored to give the leads insight into what they were going through this week, which is a contrivance of modern case-of-the-week shows that really annoys me, because it's ridiculously coincidental that the case of the week always resonates with what the main characters need to learn. Although I guess it's not so bad in this case, since we barely know Ben Song, so it's useful to tell a story that's about establishing who he is and what he's like.

Nice that they brought back Susan Diol as Beth Calavicci. She's our first returning performer from the original, aside from Deborah Pratt as the pilot narrator, though it sounds like Caitlin Bassett has taken over the narration this week.

I have science quibbles. The firing of the ISS module's thrusters would never have been powerful enough to knock the Shuttle into such a ridiculously fast spin, especially given how close it was to the center of mass. It might have induced a slow spin that would need to be corrected with thrusters, but it wouldn't have been as exaggerated as shown here.

I was going to complain about Ben not having a thruster pack, but apparently they weren't yet in standard use in 1998, though one had been tested on the shuttle in '94. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simplified_Aid_For_EVA_Rescue

You are correct.

I'd never in my life heard of anyone pronouncing "leapt" like "leaped" until just now. And the "lept" spelling is archaic.
