Playmates Toys

I have a hard time believing we will see the Prodigy stuff this year considering we still haven’t seen a shot of the Janeway or Rok prototypes. And with the trouble they have had getting the TOS, TNG and Disco stuff on shelves I just can’t see them hitting before Christmas.
Sooooooooo typical Trek licence rollout of a product.........they really have a hard time with EVERYTHING.

Yeah, I'll be shocked if we see the Prodigy toys this year too.

And I need those toys now! We have a big family project underway to induct my nephew into the Star Trek cult, and those action figures are a crucial piece of the plan.

I would have been fine with the “less cartoony” sculpts if they would have kept the scale the same.
Yeah, vague early statements from Playmates said these new figures would be "in the scale that fans are familiar with" and that they were sure that the new figures would "fit in perfectly" with the 90s toys. But to me, the difference is considerable. But if they were the same height, the new ones would look scrawny next to the old ones due to the more realistic proportioning. Perhaps a compromise could have been made.

Shame? Ok, sure. I'll just be happy to see them out.

same, even if it takes a few extra months. Just get them out.

eta: just noticed on EE that holo-Janeway has been pushed back to April ‘23. The others still say Nov ‘22.

ehhh, I don’t fault Playmates or the licensor. Supply chain issues have hit everything and toys aren’t gonna out rank food and clothes on the “get to shelves” priority list. Now, not getting out pictures of the remaining figures and packaging pictures (although I bet they are on that generic ST Universe card like Saru and Burnham) that is on Playmates.

it almost feels like a compromise between keeping in similar size to the og line and doing more realistic sculpts. It would have been nice if they did one “throwback” figure per wave that looked like the old line. Maybe of a character they didn’t do originally. Like do Archer in the old style or a quick repaint like Monster Maroon McCoy with the newer versions of Kirk, Picard, etc…

I think people are exaggerating the difference in height because most people saw the new Data first. He was always one of the smallest, weirdest figures in the original line, so the difference is greatest.

The new Khan is almost exactly the same size as the old one. New Spock is only slightly taller than the old one. New Kirk is a little larger, but again the Generations Kirk was one of the shorter figures in the OG line.

Stylistically there is a difference to be sure, but it's not night and day. I think they'll complement each other nicely.

Have you informed the parents of your nephew of this deceitful yet cunning plan?

I decided I did not want another ship right now, got the phaser instead! First time ever having an OS phaser! Kinda sad the 2 pieces don't separate though.

Oh yes, we are all co-conspirators. :bolian:

Maybe in the meantime we can get some use out some of the new Playmates figures. I feel like Saru and Data and Khan and Picard would fit well with the Batman and Spider-Man action figures we already play with. (Aside: I cannot believe how junky the construction on most of the Spider-Man stuff is)

One would hope they’d get Prodigy specific cards, to help cement things into kids’ minds.

I suppose it will come down to if they get stuck with the collectibles or warrant some peg space with the kid stuff.

Goddamn, I just ordered Riker and Khan.

Over the course of a few weeks I've had such a progression from...

"Of course I'm not going to buy any, but I am glad they're making these again"

"Maybe I'll just get Burnham. Just one."

"Well, if you're going to get Burnham, you might as well get Saru..."

Suddenly, a box with Data and Kirk was also being delivered.

Then before I knew it I was in the woods posing pics like it was a Data/Kirk/Burnham away mission to the Oversized Forest planet.

And now I am about to have purchased them all.

I am definitely lucky this is not going to be a 90's-size line. There would go the house payment.

The smart move is in the toys.

a seven (7) minute review comparing the new PlayMates Phaser with both the 1990s toy and the Art Asylum/Diamond Select versions. To the point without the clowning around in the clip presented earlier in this thread.

Oooo... it never occured to me that having the phaser as one piece made it easier to velcro it for use as a cosplay piece. I doubt that was their intent but it also makes the choice to have the screwholes on the more detailed side a little more sensical (since that's the side where the velcro would go).

Assuming one is right handed. ;) The screw holes will face outward if one is a "south paw" and velcros (velcroes?) the weapon upon the left hip.

I know damn well I’m gonna be the same way. I bought the Kirk off Amazon swearing to wait and see the others in person especially because some of the face sculpts look wonky. Yet I fully know at some point I will be heading to checkout at Target with a basket full of figures, the phaser and the Enterprise under my arm.

lol.
