What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Mandalorian. Boba Fett when a certain young visitor became part of it.
SNW -- I really look forward to it.
Before that -- tv: Crown, but that was on demand.
Breaking Bad when I caught up and it was finishing.
Movie: super rare, Elvis recently.

So it's rare. Maybe the holy Shit is a high bar though. "Really looking forward to it."

And yes, ever since I learned of writers' rooms, I definitely get the feeling of "there's a name and show that needs x episodes, how do we fill it?" Say what you will about GR (and gee, yes, I do know he liked money), but he was a writer originally who wanted to tell stories, so created a framework. And then they solicited writers who also had stories in them and could tell it through a Trek framework. I thiknk TNG also did this.

Now I feel like it's, for example, "Sir Pat wants to do a show again, what can we have happen?" Kind of backwards. Ok, rip this to shreds, as I'm sure you will.

Hot take time. Everything's about nostalgia. Remember Star Trek? That's modern Trek. Remember Avengers? That's current-day Marvel.

The stories are almost all reheated leftovers, we've seen it all before over the past 56 years. It's nice comfort viewing, it's diverting. But is it must-see? Paramount get my money every month, so they'll be happy. It's fine. I like it. But when was the last time you thought, holy shit I NEED to know what happens next? Disco S4 and Picard S2 were steps down from previous seasons. Is it still art, or is it becoming what I feared, content for the sake of contractual obligation?
DSC Season 4 actually. Yes, I'm serious. I liked it more than Seasons 2 and 3, and it's currently tied with Season 1 as my favorite while I re-watch it.

PIC Season 2 for the first few episodes, but then it went from "I can't wait to see it as soon as it drops overnight!" to "I'll catch it first thing in the morning."

Except for one overnight when I was too tired, I watched every episode of DSC Season 4 as soon as it dropped. 2:07 AM, I was there. It was crazy, but I did it.

As far as the "haven't I seen this before?" -- with anything -- welcome not being young anymore.

There was even a Mad Men episode tackling this subject, asking, "Is that all there is?"

I'm as nostalgic as anyone I know and I'm not mad we have so much content these days. Is a lot of it stuff I'm not interested in? Sure. But I don't lose sleep over it, and variety sure hasn't contaminated my love for Trek.

The current shows... I like them all with varying degrees. But my barometer for my favorite shows is very simple.

Do I have the urge to rewatch it multiple times?

So far, I have seen every episode of DISCO, PICARD, and PRODIGY once. A few episodes, twice.

SNW and LDS... I have seen them all twice or more. Every single one. I feel the need to not just watch them as they premiere, but rewatch them multiple times.

Indeed. This idea that TV has left people behind is something I find very strange. I can't keep up with stuff I want to see. So, to me, the "TV is bad" is just longing for nostalgia vs. actual engagement with content.
Maybe I’m just sad to see Star Trek turned into slop.

I've had those bouts of nostalgia too. You know 'they still made decent television 35 years ago, nowadays there's a lot more, but crap!' , that kind of mindset.

Only to find out when actually rewatching 35-year-old shows and attempting to not let nostalgia cloud my judgement, that they often weren't really any better. I simply was content with less, in those days.

That’s been my rule too. I haven’t wanted to rewatch any nu-trek. I watched a couple of seasons of Discovery and stopped, watched four episodes of Picard and stopped, watched a few episodes of the cartoon and was insulted and embarrassed. SNW I finished but don’t want to rewatch.

If they could just do a Star Trek show that would be great. SNW was close but it’s a very simple show with simple messages. It’s a good imitation.

But what is Star Trek show? When I dig back in to TOS it was an action/adventure show with social commentary occasionally woven in. That's it. When people say "It's not Star Trek" I have to pause and think which box are we trying to shove this show in to.

But, what do I know? I don't get insulted by media, I don't get embarrassed because of media, so my view on this is much different than most.

The other iterations of Star Trek were NOT "simple shows with simple messages??"

I must have been watching the wrong franchise for the past 45 years.

For better and for worse; Sturgeon's Law appreciates greater accessibility and ease of production/dissemination.
I just miss when Star Trek was for a select kind of people and I don’t care how that makes me sound. Every fandom gets infiltrated and ruined in the end. Maybe I need to watch fan productions or something.
