What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

"Fall of the Federation" was a great idea. Honestly, the Federation needed to be either fallen or missing entirely in order to give Discovery some sense of agency in the far future.

The issue is they didn't really follow-through correctly and worldbuild an interesting far-future setting which took into account hundreds of years of further technological advancements followed by a "fall."

There should have been god-tech which people had largely forgotten the underlying science behind, and just looked at as "magic" for example.

In some ways, The Burn was a galaxy wide Omega molecule explosion. Makes me wonder if the DISCO writers saw "THE OMEGA DIRECTIVE" and used that as the basis for it.

There were already other types of FTL travel other than using dilithium and warp drive in use in the 24th century. None of those were available 5, 6, 7, 800 years later?

They were all listed and brushed off as not long-term viable in DSC S3.E1

Of course, that's just in service of the current story needs. Should DIS not solve the travel problem (haven't seen the more recent seasons so perhaps they already have), and a successor series of DIS be set in, say, the 34th century and they want regular FTL travel as a common fixture there again, they'll just say that 33rd century research showed that these were long-term viable, or invented some very warp-like variant that was, after all. Or some such thing.

FTL used by Cytherians in TNG episode 'The Nth Degree' was interesting.
Enterprise travelled to the center of the galaxy in less than a minute.

That's why making the "God" alien from TFF a Cytherian criminal imprisoned on the Sha-Ka-Ree planet would be a good thing. It would not only explain the entity's noncorporeal state and powers but also how the Enterprise-A got to the center of the galaxy in a matter of days if not hours.

How about the Romulan mini-singularity drive? Did they mention that in DSC as a possibility? Or does that thing actually use dilithium as part of its system too?

I don't think it's ever said outright, but it's inferred that Romulans need to use dilithium too, given the background and dialogue in Star Trek: Nemesis involving the dilithium mines on Remus.

Or it could've been an angry Lucien... imprisoned after the OG Enterprise's last visit to the center of the galaxy in TAS!

I still think the 'window viewscreens' are dumb. They're not just a structural weakness, but a strategic one as well. I've seen 2001 and if anyone can see through the window, they can tell what everyone on the bridge is saying. Wish they had pushed the 'holographic viewscreen' instead. You achieve that windowlike perspective without looking goofy.

I will love window viewscreens until the day I die. I never understood the objection, given that any structural weaknesses is pretty much there regardless with the weapons. Just watch a ship after shields are down. Boom.

That and also everyone always seems to ignore the fact that starship sensors are already capable of giving the enemy more information about what is going on on your bridge than they could get by looking through a window.

My own head canon added "shutters" to the windows. The shutters would be above the window, and able to slide down, each plate overlapping the one next to it. The ship can then use an extra large view screen that simulates the windows, or have multiple screens open each one showing something different for the bridge crew to see, shield strength, weapons availability, damage, project a 3D view of the position and movement of all the ships. I don't see why they don't do that now, the Galaxy class had a large enough view screen as did the Sovereign.

Personally, I think the Bridge & CIC should be burried deep inside the ship, near the center point of the Saucer. But not directly center. They should also be using Holographic View Screens.

The very top and bottom of the Saucer should have a special deck used as a Bar / Lounge / Mess Hall / Rec Room with full deck height windows so it becomes a nice place to hang out after your shift.

As to which one is which, that will vary with each ship.

On one ship, the Dorsal room could be the large mess hall with a gorgeous view of space.

On another ship, the Ventral room could be that large mess hall.

That part isn't that important since it allows some unique customization and individuality.
